LEE MOTTERSHEAD SET THE SCENE YESTERDAY IN THE RACING POST
 "TODAYS BIG TALKING POINT"

LEE takes a closer look forward to "an informative day - and a lead role for a superstar."
"BUCK'S HAS NOTHING TO PROVE ON GREAT DAY
OF FESTIVAL POINTERS.
"ON FESTIVAL trials day we will watch and learn. It is an afternoon when vital evidence is created and clues are laid down that will help us solve the puzzles of March, Yet the horse who takes top billing on this stunning Saturday is a jumper who has nothing to prove. We know all we need to know about the outstanding BIG BUCK'S, Today should merely provide another opportunity to marvel at his magnificence.

"It was over today's course and distance on New Year's Day, 2009, that he first experienced British hurdles in public. Beaten in his opening nine outings over French hurdles, he has proved unbeatable over ours, establishing an unmatched record and reputation in his division.

It is a commonly held view that today's number one attraction is the finest staying hurdler to have raced in the modern era and perhaps in any other. Defeat in the Rewards4Racing Cleeve Hurdle would therefore represent a shock of cataclysmic proportions.

"None of the connections taking him on in the £50,000 contest expect to return home with a giantkiller.

"There is, however, always hope. Indeed the mere fact that that BIG BUCK'S just runs today is, for those sending the likes of MOURAD, DYNASTE and RESTLESS HARRY, the greatest inducement of all.

"For a few anxious seconds at Ascot, BIG BUCK'S appeared vulnerable. As he set off in pursuit of the front- running DYNASTE, there was a brief hint of increased urgency in the body language of Ruby Walsh. What  transpired was still an eight-length victory but
what Paul Nicholls saw that afternoon, and what he has subsequently seen at home, has convinced him that BIG BUCK'S should go in pursuit of his 15th consecutive success not, as assumed, in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle - a race he has won for the last three years - but in its Cheltenham trial. That offers his rivals a tiny crumb. They can expect to be offered no more.

"If the outcome of the Cleeve has a sense of inevitability, there is considerable uncertainty about the races which precede it, none more so  than the Argento Chase, Cheltenham's own sighter for the Betfred Gold Cup.

"Such has been the standard set by KAUTO STAR and LONG RUN that none lining up in this £100,000 prize can be confident about claiming jumping's ultimate prize in 48 days' time. However, CAPTAIN CHRIS, TIME FOR RUPERT, DIAMOND HARRY and MIDNIGHT CHASE face the starter as chasers at least capable of becoming genuine threats to the big two, or the big three if you include today's notable absentee GRANDS CRUS.

"Most interesting of all are the King George v1 Chase third CAPTAIN CHRIS, who must prove his stamina, and the ever-fragile DIAMOND HARRY, who must prove his ability to get to the start of a race, let alone to win it.

"Right at the start of the afternoon we will discover plenty about the JCB Triumph Hurdle, two of whose three market leaders. BABY MIX and GRUMETI, are among the six runners. Even more paltry is the line-up for Doncaster's Lightning Novices' Chase, but it is well worth watching as KID CASSIDY, MENORAH and KUM BESHWAR are all possibles for a vintage Racing Post Arkle.

"For the more sadistically minded, or indeed Tom Segal, there are the handicap minefields of Doncaster's Sky Bet Chase and Leopardstown's 30-runner Boylesports.com Hurdle. Try if you dare, to get those right. If you dare not, just sit back and enjoy BIG BUCK'S."

ALEX SALMOND MSP A RECENT STAR GUEST ON THE MORNING LINE
ALEX SALMOND MSP speaking live this morning on the Andrew Marr Show, is it any wonder that he wants better for Scotland?

IAN DUNCAN SMITH MP also speaking live on the Andrew Marr Show but in a very different tone, a forceful hardened dictator a typical lip service man, carbon copy of David Cameron, and the regulaters of the British Horseracing Authority mainly all bloodhorse illiterate. How are people as this getting away with what they do? The misery they are bent on causing others?

"ALEX SALMOND the Scottish First Minister said introducing the UK into the question would "confuse the issue" because the country would retain the Queen as head of state after breaking the political union.

Some critics have argued that his preferred question – Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country? – is skewed in favour of securing a positive response.

But Mr Salmond insists it is clear and decisive, and is supported by people including electoral expert Matt Qvortrup of Cranfield University.

Mr Salmond responded to suggestions on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that voters should be asked if they want to leave the UK instead.

The First Minister said: "It is SNP policy to have the Queen as our head of state.

GUEST STAR TOM SCUDAMORE BLOODHORSE LITERATE Tom has rides  at Cheltenham this afternoon, follow him and see how he gets on. Note who he rides for trainers and owners.
Tom Scudamore (born 22 May 1982) is a third-generation British flat and steeplechase jockey. He is the son of eight-time champion jockey Peter Scudamore; his grandfather Michael won the Grand National on Oxo in 1959.[1]
Background
Scudamore grew up in the tiny village of Condicote, Gloucestershire, which is deep in the heart of British jump racing. He has been riding since the age of two.[2] Scudamore was educated at Cheltenham College Junior School, and then Cheltenham College. Although Tom began riding as a jockey whilst still at Cheltenham College, there was always an educational back-up; he obtained two A-levels while maintaining a busy training schedule.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL

URGENT CONCERNS
THE PRESENT BRITISH HORSERACING AUTHORITY REGULATOR BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE WHIP RULES
BHA set to reward good practice on whips ....  we are told ... How can the BHA's bloodhorse illiterate whip rules possibly be rewarded as good practice if causing abuse to both the horses and their riders?

How can the BHA possibly believe they can reward bloodhorse literate riders for riding
according to their bloodhorse illiterate whip rules?

The British horseracing authority regulator (BHA) still refusing to recognise true bloodhorse literacy. Or to see the need even to ensure that British horseracing is run using the standards set within bloodhorse literate guidelines, to ensure horses are not abused.

The BHA within the stewarding of the British Rules of Horseracing, are they saying that they believe our own Queen Elizabeth was wasting her time inviting Monty Roberts to stay with her at Windsor Castle in the early 1980's due to her interest in his bloodhorse literacy?

It is evident that bloodhorse literacy is understood like greased lightning by all horses worldwide, no matter what language is spoken by the two legged variety.

The countdown to the  two Championship Jump Meetings in the Racing Calendar have already begun. Both Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Grand National meetings 2012
are not very far away.

Cheltenham Festival has shocking form on the death and injury front. Plus the total  PR disaster at Aintree 2011. The bloodhorse literate whip abuse in the 2011 Grand National
and now the total PR disaster at Ascot over dress code, all make a mockery of true bloodhorse literacy. Mockery that it doesn't deserve.

MORNING LINE TEAM

NICK (Lord Snooty) LUCK Host Presenter

Nick introduses us to  this mornings Star Guest Paul Bittar who joined the BHA on Wednesday. Nick the power packed presenter who brings everything together.
http://twitter.com/nickluck

STAR GUEST THE MAN OF THE MOMENT PAUL BITTAR  (AUS) (NZ)
Racing Post Report By Peter Scargill 11:02AM Sat 21 JAN 2012

"THE jockeys and the BHA are thinking along the same lines on a number of whip issues according to new BHA chief executive Paul Bittar, who admitted that the regulator had some sympathy for riders.

However, despite saying that aspects of the whip review did not work in practice, Bittar said there would not be a dramatic overhaul of the rules.

Bittar started his new role at the BHA on Wednesday and was part of a meeting with representatives from the Professional Jockeys' Association on the whip on Friday.

He said on Saturday: "The key issues we discussed yesterday are the ones that have been discussed in the media; the retention of prize-money, what they feel are disproportionate penalties compared to the breaches and also the opportunity for stewards to use more discretion and common sense to be applied when considering if a hit has been used for safety reasons. I have to say we're understanding and in some ways sympathetic to those issues.

"The riders came along initially saying we want a set number [of hits], we want clarity. We've now realised when that's actually practically applied it doesn't work in the way that we thought it would.

"I think our role as regulator is not to be dogmatic and say come hell or high water these are the rules and you'll abide by them and they won't change."

He added: "The number of hits wasn't a key issue for the jockeys and there are key elements of the review that won't change. Any considerations that we do give will really be about the issues that the riders raised yesterday."

Speaking on Channel 4 on Saturdaymorning, Bittar also said that capturing levy from offshore bookmakers "would be the main success measure of my time" at the BHA.

"I think no one would argue losing out on the offshore element is a loophole that shouldn't exist," he said.

"I think there's a fantastic opportunity through government to create some sort of licensing regime that ensures all wagering on British racing via the internet, phone, offshore, in the high street gets captured by the levy. It's fundamentally right that it should be captured."

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

JOHN LEES  REPORTS FOR THE RACING POST THIS MORNING
"BHA SET TO REWARD GOOD PRACTICE ON WHIPS

"The BHA last night signalled it could be prepared to address jockeys' concerns over the controversial whip rules by introducing incentives for good behaviour ....
J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
We are not dealing here with good behaviour rules, we are attempting to sort out the difference between bloodhorse literate whip rules and bloodhorse illiterate whip rules. To date the BHA have not even bothered to look at anything that is bloodhorse literate. Where are their bloodhorse literate whip rules?

The BHA bloodhorse illiterate whip rules abuse both the horses and the handler rider jockeys. Does the BHA want to abuse all horses and all handler riders? Is this their main aim?

HUGHES WINS APPEAL OVER INDIAN FOUL RIDING CHARGE
By Lee Mottershead 1:30PM 20 JAN 2012

"RICHARD HUGHES has had the month-long ban he received for elbowing a fellow rider revoked by the Royal Western India Turf Club, clearing him to ride in the country's Oaks on Sunday and Derby two weeks later.

"Hughes was found to be guilty of improper riding, roughly equivalent to Britain's careless riding, rather than foul riding. The month-long ban that would have ruled Hughes out of the Derby and Oaks at Mumbai racecourse was revoked and replaced with a fine of £1,283 (100,000 rupees).

"I'm obviously delighted to have been successful in the appeal. It's a weight off my mind and I'm now looking forward to riding in the Oaks on Sunday and the Derby two weeks later," said Hughes, who has enjoyed repeated success in the subcontinent Classics.

"Hughes had insisted the elbowing of rider S Zervan earlier this month had been in self-defence as he feared he would be forced through the running rail by Zervan's mount, who was hanging right.

"Racing Journalist of the Year Lee Mottershead with Richard Hughes on racing in India - don't miss the three-part series starting in Sunday's Racing Post ."
