NICK (Lord Snooty) LUCK Congratulations on the wonderful news that you have a baby
daughter. Host Presenter/Broadcaster/ Bloodhorse Illiterate.

GUEST STARS THIS MORNING GUY HARWOOD AND HIS DAUGHTER AMANDA PERRETT BOTH, BLOODHORSE LITERATE.
It could be said that Amanda’s father Guy has been her leadhorse throughout her lifetime, a key asset both throughout her riding career and throughout her training career. Such guidance is priceless.

Guy Harwood was born on June 10 1939. He married Gillian Rosalind, daughter of the late George Alec Lawson on May 4 1965. They have three daughters, Amanda Jill, Gaye Michelle and Lucinda Jane. Harwood achieved his first license to train under National Hunt Rules in 1966. Previously assistant to Bryan Marshall. A very talented rider in his youth, he had many highly successful top Point to Point horses, and was always very difficult to beat. He achieved 14 winners under NH Rules.

Harwood retained the jockey Greville Starkey born on December 21 1939, who died earlier this year. Starkey rode his first winner at Pontefract on Russian Gold in 1955. And served his Apprenticeship with Harry Thompson Jones in Newmarket. Harwood and Starkey won many, many top races with some wonderful horses, Dancing Brave amongst them. A lovely name for a horse Dancing Brave. It could be said that Starkey and Dancing Brave danced together winning many top races.

REVIEW OF THIS WEEK’S EBOR FESTIVAL MEETING FROM YORK
Brought to us live by the Channel 4 Horseracing Team. An intriguing mix of horses, color, glamour, excitement and enjoyment. Here are just a few of the highlights.

KIEREN FALLON Francs and Jim get Kieren into their broadcasting room for a chat. Kieren achieves winning rider award at York this week with 4 wins. A professional horseman who has achieved World Wide Greatness, something that no one can take away from him. A brilliant achievement that no one can buy. Only true dedication and hard work can ever achieve such a highly skilled art, in a tough and often sadly misunderstood profession wins merit as this. The shocking way that Fallon was wrongly accused and condemned falsely over what was allowed to go on over years and years, goodness knows at what financial cost, courtesy of several badly run British Establishment Parties all ‘Bloodhorse Illiterate’ all still locked up in the dark ages of horrific cruelty.

SIR MARK PRESCOTT BT at home, hosts a welcome to Alastair Down for Channel 4 bringing us an intriguing series highlighting each day the highs and the lows of a trainer’s skill in practice. A highly efficient set up, with every care taken to keep things safe for both the horses in his care, and his team of handler/riders. PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
Tanya asks for opinions this morning to e mail in, on last Thursday York Darley Oaks incident predicament when SARISKA JAMIE SPENCER would not leave the starting gate, refusing to race ... surprise, surprise SARISKA’S NO ... NO ... refusing to leave the starting gate when opened, JAMIE SPENCER’S predicament ... no can do 85/40 – disappoints all connections and punters alike. SARISKA is saying “thank you, but no thank you, no can do for you today.” This is a horse race so any and all punters should get their bet money refunded. The race was won by MIDDAY TOM QUELLY trainer Henry Cecil for K Abdulla who is having an exciting time with his horses running so well this season.

The further key point here has to be that whilst we are all allowed our own opinions, in this case, care needs to be taken to ensure that matters as these are kept in perspective. Opinions made by ‘Bloodhorse Illiterate’ persons can never be allowed to destroy the true fabric that is British horseracing, or what is left of it. Many within the British Horseracing Authority are already well advanced in the ‘Bloodhorse Illiteracy’ stakes. This should not be going on at all.

GUEST STAR EVE JOHNSON HOUGHTON (TRAINER)
Eve brings up the valid point of engaging a jockey, showing how tricky it can pan out to be sometimes, to get the jockey that you want for your horse.

Why does Sir Michael Stoute choose to work with Ryan Moore?
Why does John Gosden choose to work with William Buick?
Why does Henry Cecil choose to work with Tom Quelly?
Why does Richard Hannon choose to work with Richard Hughes?
Why does Sir Mark Prescott choose to work with Seb Sanders?
Why does Richard Fahey choose to work with Paul Hannagan?
To name only a few here. It is a great advantage to a trainer and to the horses such a trainer has in training for the owners, to have upsides him/her a rider who knows the horses. Can and often does make all the difference in the world, between winning and loosing a race.

GUEST STAR RICHARD HUGHES.
Bloodhorse Literate. Professional Horseman, Flat Race Jockey of the Highest Caliber. With some exciting rides, over the next 6 days. One of the key riders in the Richard Hannon Team.

Nick Luck talking to Richard Hughes about several recent nasty Starting Stalls accidents. Richard advises that for safety reasons, four more skilled stalls handlers are needed on all racecourses.

‘Bloodhorse Literate’ Starting Stalls Handlers are needed, in an all out endeavor to aim to prevent such hurt from happening. False and dangerous economy by Racecourses and the British Horseracing Authority, messing with horses and handler/ rider lives on the cheap, is totally unacceptable. A crime.

As Monty Roberts clearly show’s in this Channel 4 documentary film, how, with the wrong handling a horse can so easily loose confidence and panic in fear of what is happening to him/her.

‘BLUSHING ET’S FEAR OF THE STARTING STALLS DOCUMENTARY
‘Let the horses do the talking’

Monty to the rescue of traumatized thoroughbred colt Blushing ET.

Play Monty’s Blushing ET’ Documentary go to: http://www.turfcall.co.uk/montypage.htm

This is the true story of a beautiful young colt’s journey back from his fear of the starting stalls. In Monty Roberts own words:
“And that day I got home, and went out there, and started working with this young male mustang and saw him respond to my gestures, it was the most incredible feeling the most unbelieving feeling ...... But the strongest impulse within me was to say to myself who the hell is going to apologize to the species, for all these centuries of misunderstanding, of abuse, of neglect, of doing things the wrong way, its terrible .... who would have thought we could have got this so wrong, because he was telling me you have got this so right. ”

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

The retirement of HARBINGER who suffered a career ending fracture to his fetlock on his near fore leg whilst at exercise on the gallops in Newmarket last Saturday (07.08.2010)

Sir Michael Stoute said “It would be a blow to anyone, he was a great horse and a lovely character with a great mind. The Hardwicke gave you a peek of what he could be and he confirmed it in the King George. If he could have remained at that plateau then we could have had a world champion on our hands.

“You have got to get organised for surgery and remain cool. You must realise there are people suffering more than you are. It’s harder for the girl who looks after him every morning and rides him out, you can’t feel sorry for yourself. It was not a complicated fracture and he has come through the surgery well. The owners (Highclere Thoroughbred Racing) had to make a decision, it’s not my decision to make .”

RIP OFF BRITAIN
All British politicians need now to serve the people living and working in this country in a similar way. To go out and meet the people whilst they are at work and to take a hand with them in doing the work. So as to be sure that any
and all poor practices are put to rights, and fast. All politicians will be needed to carry out this work not just the present parties elected, because this whole country and all the people in it have been neglected and ignored decade after decade, after decade by a political system well past its sell by date.

The National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket has an exciting project in hand, for the development of a ‘World Class’ facility at Palace House Stables. Believed to be the oldest racing stable in the world.

With £5.5 million already pledged. Including £1m from the Suffolk County Council and £713,000 from Forest Heath District Council.

There is to be included a working stable yard with a 4 acres paddock for events involving live horses.

Work is well advanced on the planning side. With Chris Garibaldi to be the
Museum’s new director.

Christopher Garibaldi

Whether this will go far enough to bridge the gap and uphold the rights and needs of all true professional horsemen and horsewomen, the ‘Bloodhorse Literate’ to include Career Structures for the young ones. Poses the question does Christopher Garibaldi’s have these skills himself?

Perhaps Julie Cecil, and Lydia Pearce and others with key experience in this direction would be able to develop the facilities needed in this department to ensure that ‘Bloodhorse Literacy’ is both obtainable and sustainable ......

GITANO HERNANDO AMONG A STELLAR ENTRY OF 66 FOR THE EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES 2010

Gitano Hernando missed his intended engagement in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes last month due to a splint problem but trainer Marco Botti is hopeful that his top-class colt will be at peak fitness in time for a possible tilt at the £350,000 Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Champions Day, Saturday, 16th October.

Successful in October in the Grade One Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita, USA, Gitano Hernando is one of 66 outstanding entries for what promises to be another fantastic renewal of the historic 10-furlong contest.

Owned by Team Valor International and Gary Barber, the Hernando colt progressed throughout last season but his four-year-old campaign has been compromised by injury. His last start came in the Group One Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline at Meydan in March when, in a race that was not run to suit his style, he finished a close sixth.

Botti revealed: “Gitano Hernando had a splint but he is back in full work now and we are looking forward to the autumn. The horse is doing well so we have given him an entry in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes and we will see how he comes along. He looks well and he is an athletic horse so he always keeps himself quite fit at home. I am pleased with him.

“At the moment, nothing is set, there is plenty of time to decide between now and the middle of October, so we will see how he progresses before committing him to any target.

“He will probably have a prep race and that is something I will discuss with the owners closer to the time. It is not easy to get a horse fully fit for a race like the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes after a long lay-off without a prep, but it all depends on how he is in the next few weeks.

“I will leave plans in Team Valor’s and Gary’s (Barber) hands and we will sit down and decide where he goes. It has not quite been decided yet if the Breeders’ Cup is his long term target, we will just see at the moment how he progresses and then we will consider his options but the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes is a race we will look at.”

The fantastic entry also includes the sport’s latest sensation, Harbinger, who won the Group One King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on 24th July by a record 11 lengths.

Sir Michael Stoute’s charge had this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco, trained by Aidan O’Brien, a distant second at Ascot and the latter colt’s stablemate Fame And Glory, impressive when winning last season’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and victorious in the Group One Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom in June, is also among the entries.

Twice Over won the Group One Coral-Eclipse and Henry Cecil’s popular five-year-old could attempt to become the first back-to-back winner of the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes since Alborada (1998 & 1999), having won the race last year by half a length from the Marcus Tregoning-trained Mawatheeq.

The 2009 Investec Oaks heroine Sariska, trained by Michael Bell, was third that day having previously chased home subsequent Group One Dubai Sheema Classic winner Dar Re Mi, trained by John Gosden for Lady Lloyd-Webber, in the Group One Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

Twice Over’s stablemate Midday won the Grade One Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf last season and, having run second to Sariska in the Group Two totesport.com Middelton Stakes at York in May, gained a second consecutive victory in the Group One Blue Square Nassau Stakes at Goodwood last week.

Another tremendous filly among the entries is this year’s Investec Oaks winner Snow Fairy, trained by Ed Dunlop, who emulated Sariska with a wide-margin triumph in the Group One Darley Irish Oaks on her next start after Epsom.

Since 1990, fillies have won the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes on six occasions and others of note are the O’Brien-trained Group One Coronation Stakes winner Lillie Langtry and the Jim Bolger-trained Lush Lashes, a triple Group One winner in 2008 who is back in training at the age of five after losing the foal she was carrying to Sea The Stars.

The all-conquering Richard Hannon has entered one of the best three-year-olds in training, Group One Prix Jean Prat victor Dick Turpin.

There is a real depth of quality to this year’s Emirates Airline Champion Stakes entry with the Andre Fabre-trained Byword, successful in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, joined in the entries by 11 other hugely-talented French raiders including this season’s Group One 2000 Guineas hero Makfi from Mikel Delzangle’s stable.

Vision D’Etat already has four Group One wins on the board and the Eric Libaud-trained Prix du Jockey Club hero of two years ago, victorious in the 2009 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase, is looking to bounce back after being last seen finishing down the field in the Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline.

Alain de Royer-Dupre, successful with Pride in 2006, has also entered a Classic winner in the shape of unbeaten Group One Prix de Diane scorer Sarafina. The trainer has also engaged Group Two Prix Eugene Adam hero Shimraan, Mellon Martini and Reggane.

Criquette Head-Maarek saddled the brilliant Hatoof to win the race in 1993 and the Chantilly-based trainer has entered Fuisse, the impressive winner of a Group Three contest at Maisons-Laffitte on 17th July, while Jean-Claude Rouget, triumphant with Literato in 2007, may run last season’s impressive Prix de Diane winner Stacelita, who was runner-up to Midday in the Blue Square Nassau Stakes on 31st July.

O’Brien, who has 11 of the 13 Irish-trained entries, could also saddle 2009 Group One Sussex Stakes hero Rip Van Winkle, runner-up to Canford Cliffs in this year’s renewal of that same race on 28th July, as well as last winter’s ante-post Investec Derby favourite St Nicholas Abbey.

There are 13 Godolphin entries split between trainers Saeed bin Suroor and Mahmood Al Zarooni.

DUNBOYNE EXPRESS OUT TO MAINTAIN IRISH DOMINATION OF JUMEIRAH DEWHURST STAKES

Irish-trained horses have dominated the past four renewals of the £300,000 Group One Jumeirah Dewhurst Stakes and Co Kildare handler Kevin Prendergast could aim to take the majority of the spoils back across the Irish Sea once more with his unbeaten Dunboyne Express, who features among 81 entries for the seven-furlong contest.

The Shamardal colt scored on his debut in a Leopardstown maiden in June and followed up with a comprehensive eight-length victory over Samuel Morse in the Group Three Jebel Ali Stables & Racecourse Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh on 18th July.

He is now set to return to the Curragh and take on the current ante-post favourite for next year’s 2000 Guineas, the Richard Hannon-trained Strong Suit, in the Group One Phoenix Stakes on Sunday, 8th August.

Prendergast reported: “We have given Dunboyne Express an entry in the Jumeirah Dewhurst Stakes and the race is certainly an option for him. He is hopefully running in the Phoenix Stakes on Sunday and, while I would rather that we weren’t coming up against Strong Suit, we are going to have to take him on at some point.

“He came out of the Anglesey Stakes well and he couldn’t have won more impressively. He had Samuel Morse eight lengths behind him and the same colt was beaten four and three-quarter lengths by Strong Suit in the Coventry Stakes, so we have some cause for optimism, although I am sure that Richard’s colt could have won by further at Royal Ascot.

“He has a very good pedigree and he’s the first colt that I have trained for his owner/breeder John Connaughton, who had horses in training with my brother Paddy. There have been plenty of offers for the colt but he’s not selling at the moment.

“We have also entered a nice unraced colt Ansaab and Longhunter, who scoped badly after disappointing in the Railway Stakes but is fine now - hopefully he will be back for the Group Two Futurity Stakes at the Curragh on 21st August.”

Aidan O’Brien enjoyed a one-two in last year’s Jumeirah Dewhurst Stakes as Beethoven edged out Fencing Master in a thrilling finish and the master of Ballydoyle is responsible for 21 entries, headed by recent Group Three winner Zoffany, Naas maiden scorer Lake Ontario and Samuel Morse.

A quartet of entries from Jim Bolger, who racked up a hat-trick of victories with Teofilo (2006), New Approach (2007) and Intense Focus (2008), includes impressive maiden winner Head Space and Glor Na Mara, while Jessica Harrington has entered Pathfork, who won the same Curragh maiden that launched the careers of both Teofilo and New Approach.

Richard Hannon has enjoyed phenomenal success with his juveniles this term and the experienced handler may bid for a first success in the Jumeirah Dewhurst Stakes with Strong Suit, who posted a nose verdict over the Michael Jarvis-trained Elzaam in the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Wiltshire trainer may also be represented by King Torus, whose two Group Two wins so far this term included an all-the-way success in the 32Red.com Superlative Stakes, and Group Two TNT July Stakes scorer Libranno, who also followed up success at the Champagne Lanson July Festival with a Group Two victory at Glorious Goodwood.

Other notable entries include impressive Newmarket novice stakes winner Peter Martins, from the stable of Jeremy Noseda, Listed Chesham Stakes scorer Zaidan, representing Clive Brittain, and Native Khan, who made an eye-catching debut for Ed Dunlop when taking a maiden at the Champagne Lanson July Festival.

MUSHARAKAAT AMONG NINE FILLIES DECLARED FOR German-Thoroughbred.com SWEET SOLERA STAKES AT NEWMARKET

SWEET SOLERA STAKES FOR TWO YEAR OLD FILLIES TO BE RUN AT NEWMARKET TODAY 2.35pm

Nine promising fillies are set to line up in one of the most informative juvenile contests of the season, the £40,000 Group Three German-Thoroughbred.com Sweet Solera Stakes (2.35pm), highlight of a seven-race card at Newmarket on Saturday, 7th August.

Recent winners of the seven-furlong contest have included Soviet Song, who posted a convincing victory in 2002 en route to five Group One wins, and the 2008 champion two-year-old filly Rainbow View, who progressed to triumph at the highest level in both the Fillies’ Mile and the Matron Stakes.

Last year’s contest saw Long Lashes follow up Listed success at the Curragh with a comfortable victory on her first start for Godolphin, although it was the fourth home Snow Fairy who subsequently took the limelight with a pair of stunning victories in this season’s English and Irish Oaks.

Snow Fairy’s trainer Ed Dunlop will this year be represented by Musharakaat, who was the ready winner of a seven-furlong maiden on the Polytrack of Kempton Park on her only start on 14th July.

Angus Gold, racing manager to the Iffraaj filly’s owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: “Musharakaat is in good form at the moment - I spoke to Ed this morning and he seems happy with her.

“We had the option of running in a novice contest at Lingfield next Tuesday but we feel that she has improved since Kempton and deserves to take her chance at Newmarket.

“She is taking a big step up but, if you take out Luca Cumani’s filly Khor Sheed, the race has an open look about it so we thought that we would let Musharakaat run and see if she is up to Group class.

“She will certainly get the seven furlongs and we are hopeful that she is a progressive filly. She won nicely on her debut, when she probably needed the run, and she will have come on for that outing.

“We have given her entries in some of the top end of season races and her sire Iffraaj is doing well. We don’t know much about her but she seems to be heading in the right direction and we will learn a bit more about her on Saturday.”

Khor Sheed will return to the July Course after scoring over six furlongs in the Listed totesport.com Empress Stakes on 26th June, while Crying Lightening, from the stable of Peter Chapple-Hyam, and the Mick Channon-trained Fork Handles are set to re-oppose after coming home third and fourth respectively in a Sandown Listed contest on 22nd July.

White Moonstone, representing last year’s winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor, and the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Clinical have both recorded impressive victories on their sole starts.

The field is completed by Al Madina, from the stable of Bryan Smart, the Clive Brittain-trained Elkmait and Emma’s Gift, who was fifth behind subsequent Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Memory in the Group Three Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot for trainer Julia Feilden.

Newmarket also races tomorrow evening, Friday, 6th August, when there could also be some stars of the future on show in the Talk Night Club Maiden Stakes (6.45pm). Run over seven furlongs and restricted to two-year-olds who have never run, the contest has proved very informative since it was inaugurated two years ago.

In 2008, the finish was fought out between Wingwalker and Delegator, who progressed to beat all bar the great Sea The Stars in the following year’s 2000 Guineas while Godolphin’s Al Zir got the better of Awesome Act last year with the latter going on to enjoy Grade Three success in the US.

This year’s renewal has attracted 17 declarations with Sir Michael Stoute represented by Audacious, owned by the Queen, while Godolphin’s Mahmood Al Zarooni has two runners in Arc Light and Biondetti.

Barry Hills is represented by the Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Ektibaas, a son of Haafhd and a grandson of one of the most outstanding broodmares ever seen, Fall Aspen. The same owner is also represented by Lejaam, trained by John Dunlop and from the family of Group One winner and leading sire Invincible Spirit.

Luca and Sara Cumani’s Fittocks Stud often produces horses of note and they are represented by Franciscan while Richard Hannon, so proficient with his juveniles this season, runs Touch Of Red.

Following the success of the Talk Night Club Maiden Stakes, unraced fillies will also get the chance to prove their potential on Saturday’s card in the Home of Racing Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (3.45pm), also run over seven furlongs.

A field of 17 newcomers features the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Buttonhole, a half-sister to Group One winner Red Bloom, and Morning Charm, a half-sister to Group One St Leger victor Lucarno from the stable of John Gosden.
