PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

WEATHER IN TURF PERSPECTIVE
It’s very tricky for everyone, C4, racecourses, for owners, their horses and trainers and their teams when the weather as today could cause racing to be abandoned, to dangerous to race on due to the frost going too deep into the ground to thaw out properly, and the uncertainty for the public who don’t quite know whether to set off on their journey to the racecourse, or not. The gigantic endevour by the racecourses who now cover their whole tracks with sheets of stuff to save the ground for racing. Amazing.

Nicky started training in 1978 and has trained over 30 Cheltenham National Hunt Festival winners. He has been extremely successful with our partnership horses, notably CAPTAIN MILLER, winner of the Queen's Prize and SCOTS GREY, FLEET STREET, SIR JIMMY SHAND, BONCHESTER BRIDGE, SKYE BLUE and LONG SHOT are just some of the many winners he has trained for us over the years.

FLEET STREET's career has been interrupted by injury, but his third at the 2004 Cheltenham National Hunt Festival in the Supreme Novices Hurdle to BRAVE INCA and WAR OF ATTRITION speaks for itself. GENERAL MILLER is another of our team with top class potential, along with SCOTS DRAGOON.

WATCH AND LEARN.
People who have achieved ‘Bloodhorse Literacy’ at this level have learned a finely tuned work of art, in practice. They are not crooks or vagabonds they work hard to ensure that they understand the nature of the horse, key to establishing the wellbeing of all the horses. And strive to do all possible to reduce ‘Bloodhorse
Illiteracy.’ We cannot afford to go on taking professional horsemen for granted. There has to be a true understanding here.

There has to be a sound career path for the young ones to follow. At present there is not.

There has to be a fair wage structure according to expertise achievements. At present there is not.

There has to be fair and reasonable 'Bloodhorse Literate' regulation and disciplinary departments within BHA. At present there is not.

BLOOD MONEY
The British Horseracing Authority, the Government  and the Legal Justice System have to address  their irratic and often ignorant working practices, especially found within the regulation and disciplinary side of British Horseracing. At present ignored, non existant . This cannot be allowed to continue on getting more and more dangerouse by the minute.

KING GEORGE RESULTS KEMPTON PARK SATURDAY 15.01.2011

3.00 KING GEORGE WINNER,  LONG RUN and MR SAM WALEY-COHEN 6-11-10 proved themselves a formidable partnership to be reckoned with last year, so it really shouldn’t be a great surprise that they took this race so easily and in such fine style this year, winning by 12 length at 9/2.

This was a Chase over 3 miles with 18 big solid fences to be jumped. The question perhaps here is, in this present year 2011 are 18 fences over 3 miles, 4 fences too many?

Should we be asking ourselves do we really want to see horses falling dead during races, or collapsing dead, after the winning post, or finishing so tired out that they can hardly walk back after the race? Is this going to encourage extra people to come racing?

The live recordings of horses nearing the end of each race show in their eyes that they have been stretched, forced well beyond their limit of endurance. Is it fair and reasonable to keep forcing these horses to do too much?

Or would it be fairer and more reasonable in this day and age particularly for the horses, if the fences to be jumped were reduced ?

Do we really want to see our favourite racehorses, or any racehorses left to blunder through fences when they are done right in? As was KAUTO STAR partnered by AP MC COY 11-11-10 last Saturday at the second last fence in this race?

Channel4 racing have shown us some film replay recently of KAUTO STAR partnered by RUBY WALSH racing on several different occasions. Films that show just how far KAUTO STAR takes off before his fences. Way back from each fence makes him look as if he is literally flying. Amazing in fact. KAUTO and AP nearly took the second last fence in this race out by its roots. How they managed to keep in one piece a miracle.

Bloodhorse Literate proven horsemen need to sort this one out, and sooner rather than later. It was not so long ago that Jonjo O’Neill and Paul Nicholls spoke up about one particular fence, that in view of safety reasons should be removed. But Bloodhorse Illiterate BHA parties would not allow this.

Crunch time is now. All this needs sorting out properly for once and for all.

C4 MORNING LINE HORSERACING TEAM TODAY ARE:

NICK (Lord Snooty) LUCK
HOST presenter, specialist broadcaster. Bloodhorse illiterate.

GUESS STAR RUBY WALSH, BLOODHORSE LITERATE PROFESSIONAL JUMP JOCKEY. SEVEN TIMES IRISH JUMP JOCKEY CHAMPION. OUT AT PRESENT WITH A BROKEN LEG. HOPES TO RETURN IN MID TO LATE FEBRUARY 2011.

RUBY sitting it out on the sidelines today with C4 team to watch TONY (AP) Mc COY take his ride on KAUTO STAR AT 3.00pm IN THE THREE MILE KING GEORGE VI CHASE.

Ruby Walsh (born Rupert Walsh on 14 May 1979 in Kill, County Kildare, Ireland) is the reigning Irish National Hunt champion jockey. He is the second child, and eldest son, of former champion amateur jockey Ted Walsh and his wife Helen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Walsh#Injuries

Like many jump jockeys, Walsh has suffered a number of serious injuries, the worst of which was a broken leg sustained in 1999 at Pardubice in the Czech Republic, a course he was visiting in order to compete in the famous Great Pardubice Steeplechase. He later broke the same leg while schooling a horse and was out of action for a total of five months that season, but recovered in time to partner Papillon to win his first Grand National.

Walsh has also fractured his wrist twice, dislocated one hip and fractured the other, cracked his elbow, dislocated both shoulders and suffered cracked and badly bruised vertebrae. A fall at the Paddy Power meeting at Cheltenham in November 2008 resulted in Walsh having his spleen removed in an emergency operation.[3] He returned to the saddle 27 days later.

Walsh fractured his left ankle during a fall from the ill-fated Imperial Hills, trained by Willie Mullins at Killarney in May 2009. During his time off he was present to saddle Sesenta for Willie Mullins in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot.

During the run-up to the 2010 Grand National he broke his left arm after a fall from Celestial Halo. His horse fell and they both seemed to have got away unscathed, but a horse racing behind them landed on his arm while he was on the floor, breaking it in two places.

TEMPAREMENT calm, quick, grounded, in tune with his horses.

LIVE LINK, GUEST STAR NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES , BLOODHORSE LITERATE
The Nigel Twiston-Davies website, National Hunt Trainer of the Year, 2010!
http://www.nigeltwistondavies.co.uk/TodaysRunners.html

We meet up with Nigel Twiston-Davies at his home. He brings to light some key issues that are of great concern to all those who work at the dangerous sharp end of horseracing without whom there would be no British horseracing. All those who have achieved Bloodhorse Literacy, something that money cannot buy. Issues that the British Horseracing Authority need to improve upon, to move forward on ... to re-tune and improve upon, especially in this Bloodhorse Literate Zone.

The present man in charge at BHA Nic Coward, he is Bloodhorse Illiterate. This poses the question, Should a Bloodhorse Illiterate person be holding a position such as this in the first place? Coward may have several talents in other key areas. But if he is not truly Bloodhorse Literate he has no place holding this particular position.

COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS
The other key problem with the BHA, they take such offence if anyone attempts to suggest a better way forward, or points out errors of judgement that need adjusting, correcting.

EG: AIDAN O’BRIEN CAPE BLANCO SAGA  http://turfcall2.blogspot.com/
A very recent glaring example hit the headlines before Christmas, showing just how wrong the BHA get things, and how long they take in getting things so wrong. Wasting their own time and  huge mounts of money, not only their own, but many many other people's as well. Above all else a licensed trainer's responsibilities are to tend and mind the horses placed in his care by owners. More than ever when a horse comes in after racing with an injury. The BHA people should do all they can to uphold all rights and needs of the horses, not barge in and hinder first aid treatement, as was the case in  CAPE BLANCO'S case.
Has Aidan O’ Brien been refunded the £10,000 BHA parties stung him with unjustly, before Christmas, for carrying out his duties to CAPE BLANCO properly? Have BHA parties put their hands up and admitted that they got this so wrong? If not, why not? Have BHA parties made a public apology to Aidan O’Brien and connections? Have they admitted that they got this issue so dreadfully wrong ? If not, why not?

The BHA attitude appears to be “ Put up and shut up ...... Chop of their heads style”

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
The Racing Post Friday 7th January. "David Ashforth at his brilliant best in the final part of a week-long Racing Post Retirement Special. Time to say goodbye
http://www.turfcall2-racingpost.blogspot.com/

"A BIG YEAR FOR THE TOTE GOING, GOING, SOON GONE ... "
HOWARD WRIGHT REPORTS FOR THE RACING POST ( 06.01.2011)
"Racing for the Tote hots up as axe looms for number of bidders.
Shortlist may be reduced to as few as three in coming weeks."

BLOOD MONEY
The Tote does not belong to the Government, or to the Racecourses as neither does it belong to the Tax Payer. This ‘run away false direction’ needs to be adjusted, now. The TOTE has been bought in blood many, many times over ... human and equine blood.  The governments Rip off Britain tactics must be stopped.  Horsemen who have achieved bloodhorse literacy are nothing to do with any charity.

C4 John (the greatest jockey) Francome points out that all the Tote betting shops throughout the country need to be retained and kept up properly, improved, not sold off to the highest bidder. John is right.

THE TOTE was originally founded to provide the financial backup that British horseracing so badly needed and still needs, but gradually it has been claimed by others through greed. At present only a very small amount of Tote income is ploughed back into racing, none of which reaches the heartbeat of all those who work at the dangerous sharp end of horseracing to include the horses, without whom there would be no racing..

The daylight robbery caused and burdened upon all these highly skilled horsemen ongoing over decades, through Bloodhorse Illiterate government parties, racecourse parties, bookmakers and others is a scandal. The young ones today who may wish to work to achieve Bloodhorse Literacy have scant chance of making the grade as there is no career structure available for them ... just how bad is that ... All the young ones today are being let down right,  left and centre. Shame on the Bloodhorse Iliterate government parties.who now have led themselves into believe that they can declare in THEORY that they own the Tote together with the Tax Payers  Who are they trying to kid?  Pull the other leg  its got bells on.

Elsworth just back riding after injury in a heavy fall from Keepitsecret on August 28 2010 which put him in hospital for two days and left him with bruising on the brain.
Elsworth tells us: 'Because it was concussion, it was a fairly slow process. The brain is a very delicate thing, so just small steps, I'd struggle to ride a bike down the road because I have trouble with my balance, I couldn’t even run or exert myself. You have to wait for nature to take its course. The doctors said last August that it could take up to six months. It did give me the time to look around at other things, that whilst riding I don’t get time to do.

ELSWORTH tells us that he is not related to trainer DAVID ELSWORTH, OF DESERT ORCHID FAME. he says it would have been good if he was.

GUESS STAR MICK FITZGERALD BLOODHORSE LITERATE
Retired Professional Jump Jockey of the highest calibre, of world renown.

Mick joined trainer Richard Lister at the age of 16 from the pony riding circuit, a popular source of future aspiring top jockeys in Ireland.

He rode his first winner in Britain on Lover’s Secret at Ludlow on 11th December 1988 and since then he has booted home around 1,250 winners – 12 of them at the Cheltenham Festival and enabling him to be in the top six of all-time riders over fences.

A short spell riding for Jackie Retter in the 1991/92 season then saw Mick land a long-standing retainer with top Lambourn trainer Nicky Henderson and the partnership has proved very successful ever since.

In recent years, Fitzgerald established himself as one of the leading jockeys in Britain, particularly through his partnership with the brilliant Paul Nicholls trained chaser See More Business, on whom he won the King George VI Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1999.

That year’s Cheltenham Festival was a bumper year for Mick where he took the Gold Cup, Triumph Hurdle on Katarino, the two mile Queen Mother Champion Chase on Call Equiname, and the Cathcart Chase on Stormyfairweather.

Mick has now retired following a serious injury to his neck, but continues to work actively in racing and as a pundit for satellite racing channel Attheraces.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

JOHN OAKSEY BLOODHORSE LITERATE
The Noble Lord rode as an amateur from 1955 to 1975, taking the amateur jockeys' title over jumps in the 1957-58 and 1970-71 seasons. He was narrowly beaten second to Ayala in the 1963 Grand National on Carrickbeg, and won the 1958 Whitbread and Hennessy Gold Cups on Taxidermist.

How did you get into racing?

As a child my family were very keen on racing and I was taken to Cheltenham races frequently when I was very young, not long after the time of Golden Miller. I have ridden all of my life and hunted. I was training to be a barrister and my first winner came in a race confined to the legal profession, known as the BAR Point-to-Point. I rode a horse called Next Of Kin.

I also rode out for Bob Turnell near Marlborough and got more and more hooked on racing and so instead of being a barrister I decided to become a racing correspondent; my first job was with the Daily Telegraph where I wrote as "Marlborough" (this pen-name was due to me always reversing the charges from Marlborough to the office). In 1958 my riding career took off when I rode Taxidermist and won the Whitbread Gold Cup, in the November of the same year we also won the Hennessy which was run at Cheltenham.

What was your childhood ambition?

To be really good at one of several sports.

When did you join Channel 4 Racing?

I joined ITV in 1970.

Do you prefer flat or jumping?

Jumping: Far more fun and much nicer people.

Who or what has inspired or influenced you professionally?

Peter O'Sullevan.

Who do you most admire - all time?

1st Duke of Wellington.

What is your most memorable moment?

The 1971 Whitbread Gold Cup when I was disqualified. I was riding Proud Tarquin and he ducked towards The Dikler in the run-in, it was a tough finish and the horses fought it out head to head. I won by a head but was disqualified and felt this was very unfair at the time.

What is your most favourite horse?

Tuscan Prince won 13 races, five or six when I was aboard. When he retired, his owner, Sir John Thomson gave "Tusky" to me. My daughter used him as a schoolmaster in point-to-points and he was the safest jumper. We also team chased him, but he would only go well if my wife's mare was in the lead.

What is your best piece of advice for anyone wanting to make betting pay?

Never expect to make it pay because you probably won't. If you do bet, keep the stakes small and don't chase your losses.

If you could change one thing in racing, what would it be?

I would change the Levy Board's bias towards flat racing prize money from 60-40 in favour, to 60-40 in favour of jump racing.

Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to get into the racing or broadcasting industry?

Get involved in some way, ie. ride, go racing, work in a yard. Give yourself some connection that you can relate to.

What is your most memorable bet?

Cautious at Chepstow the price was 6/1.

What is your favourite sport other than racing?

Skiing.

What is your greatest sporting achievement outside of racing?

I was run out by Denis Compton, stumped by Godfrey Evans and I hit J J Warr for a six.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

We had tipped a horse to win at Warwick and it came to a photo finish. When the result was announced it had been beaten and I didn't realise my microphone was on and I said "Oh Bugger" on air!

Do you surf the internet?

No!

Which School/University did you go to?

I went to Eton and then on to Yale, where I learnt to ski and had a lovely time.

What is your greatest achievement?

Helping to start the Injured Jockeys' Fund.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, three dogs and one aged cat.

What is your favourite pastime?

Walking the dogs.

Do you have any superstitions?

Yes. I say good morning to magpies, don't walk under ladders and refuse to sit down thirteen to a table. Don't much like the colour green.

What is the biggest lie you have ever told?

Difficult question, I tell them all the time!

Do you have any pet hates?

Designer stuble, dog fights and people who are rude to waiters.

FAVOURITES:

Racecourse - Sandown

Horse - Arkle, Taxidermist and Tuscan Prince

Drink - Champagne

Programme - Dad's Army

Colour - Plum

Sport - Skiing

Hobby - Reading

What is your star sign?

Aries.
