WAR HORSE
IN CINEMAS JANUARY 13th

"THIS IS VINTAGE SPIELBERG: POWERFUL, COURAGEOUS AND HONEST"
Sunday Telegraph

WAR HORSE is a 2011 war drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and released in the United States on 25 December 2011[3] and in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2012.[4]
It is based on both War Horse, a children's novel set during World War I, by British author Michael Morpurgo, first published in the United Kingdom in 1982, and the 2007 stage adaptation of the same name.[5]

The cast includes David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Marsan, Toby Kebbell and Peter Mullan.[6][7] The film is produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, and executive produced by Frank Marshall and Revel Guest.[8] Long term Spielberg collaborators Janusz Kamiński, Michael Kahn and John Williams all worked on the film.

Gallipoli: WORLD WAR 1 1914 - 1918
Between 25 APRIL 1915 and 9 JANUARY 1916
10 million people were killed in World War 1, we are not told how many horses were killed.

The gentleman who helped J Margaret Clarke (Turfcall) achieve bloodhorse literacy fought at Gallipoli and came home after. One of the best true bloodhorse literate horsemen that has ever walked on the face of this earth. His name was WILLIAM (Bill) PETTS he lived near Winchester

The place, Gallipoli peninsula the European part of Turkey,
Before Paul Roy (BHA Chairman) takes another step in the wrong direction he needs to accept that he is bloodhorse illiterate.

The author of WAR HORSE Michael Morpurgo

Life and career of Michael Morpurgo

[edit] From teaching to writing

Morpurgo's first job was as a primary school teacher, in Kent. While he was teaching, in his late twenties, he discovered his talent for storytelling, stating "I could see there was magic in it for them, and realized there was magic in it for me." [6]
His writing career was inspired by Ted Hughes's Poetry in the Making, Paul Gallico's The Snow Goose and Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea.[7] Poets Seán Rafferty and Ted Hughes were influential in his career, with Hughes becoming a friend, mentor and neighbour.
In 2009, he donated the short story Look At Me, I Need a Smile to Oxfam's "Ox-Tales" project, four collections of UK stories written by 38 authors. Morpurgo's story was published in the "Water" collection.[8]
Morpurgo's work is noted for its "magical storytelling",[7] for recurring themes such as the triumph of an outsider or survival, for characters' relationships with nature, and for vivid settings such as the Cornish coast or World War I.

AS REFERENCED ABOVE
Paul Gallico's The Snow Goose
Plot summary
The Snow Goose is a simple, short written parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war. It documents the growth of a friendship between Philip Rhayader, an artist living a solitary life in an abandoned lighthouse in the marshlands of wartime Essex because of his disabilities, and a young local girl, Fritha. The Snow Goose, symbolic of both Rhayader (Gallico) and the world itself, wounded by gunshot and many miles from home, is found by Fritha and, as the human friendship blossoms, the bird is nursed back to flight, and revisits the lighthouse in its migration for several years, as Fritha grows up. Rhayader and his small sailboat eventually are lost in the British retreat from Dunkirk, having saved several hundred men. The bird, which was with Rhayader, returns briefly to the grown Fritha on the marshes. She interprets this as Rhayader's soul taking farewell of her (and realizes she had come to love him). Afterwards, a German pilot destroys Rhayader's lighthouse and all of his work, except for one portrait Fritha saves after his death: a painting of her as Rhayader first saw her—a child, with the wounded snow goose in her arms.
The book was a huge success in England where it remains popular with, and recommended for, readers of all ages.

DESERT ORCHID WON THE KING GEORGE V1 CHASE 4 TIMES

RACING POST
NEWS WEEK MONDAY DECEMBER 19th TO SUNDAY DECEMBER 25th 2011
SOME INTERSTING RUNNERS TODAY TO FOLLOW
FROM DAVID PIPE'S TEAM (RP 24.12.2011)
YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED

DAVID SETS THE SCENE:
"WE SHOULD have some decent chances among our 14 Boxing Day runners, spread around six different meetings, including Leopardstown, but there's only one place to start .....
KEMPTON PARK
GRANDS CRUS faces his toughest task to date over fences;
2.00 williamhill.com Feltham Novices' Chase, a mini-RSA Chase in which his five opponents include BOBS WORTH and SILVINIACO CONTI. In an ideal world he'd prefer softer ground and a more galloping track, but I'm sure it will be okay for him. He's entitled to be favourite and let's hope he wins again.
*2.00 williamhill.com Feltham Novices' Chase (In Memory of Nigel Clark) (Grade 1)
(Class 1) 4 yo+ over 3m winner £22,780
WIN : GRANDS CRUS (FR) 6 11-7 partner TOM SCUDAMORE handler presenter? trainer D Pipe for Roger Stanley and Yvonne Reynolds 111. 6-5f from SILVINIACO CONTI
3.40 "We also run MY BROTHER SYLVEST in the handicap hurdle there but I should think the handicapper has hold of him now.

TOWCESTER
12.50 "We run BATTLE GROUP in the beginners' chase and if you were twisting my arm I'd say he was my Christmas banker. He was a mid-140's hurdler and ran a good first race over fences at Wetherby. He's been schooling well at home.

3.35 "We also run PRASINA RUSSATA, an Irish point-to-pointer, in the bumper he's bred to be a three-miler, so Towcester is a good starting point.

FFOS LAS
"2.50 SWING BILL heads for the Professional Security Management Handicap Chase where it's a small field for a nice prize. He's got top weight and the ground will be testing enough, but CONOR O'FARRELL takes 3lb off and he'll go through it.

"3.25 EL LOBO runs in the Lincwear Handicap Chase. The handicapper has put him on 128, which looks high enough, but he's a likeable horse and 2m3f on soft ground will suit him well.

HUNTINGDON
"12.15 BIG OCCASION is the only one going to Huntingdon, he runs in the 3m2f novice hurdle but he is an important runner, not least because he could provide CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS with a winning return after more than a year on the sidelines. The softer the better, as all BIG OCCASION does is jump and stay.

WINCANTON
"We have four of the nine runners in the Pertemps Qualifier
1.40 ASHKAZAR who has two ways of running but has been freshened up since Wetherby.
BUENA VISTA who has the headgear back on
SHOEGAZER, freshened up since dissapointing us somewhat at Chepstow  DECOY who won at the Paddy Power meeting and then ran into a good one at   Ascot. DECOY is a few pounds out of the handicap so we're claiming from him.

2.50 " SHAKING HANDS, unlucky to be caught on the line
over 4m at Exeter. Might find 3m1f on the sharp side at Wincanton in the Handicap Chase, but he'll be ridden by prominently and if HADDEN FROST can get him into a rhythm he'll have a chance

3.50 "KILRYE has his first run for us in a bumper. He was bought after finishing second in a similar race in Ireland and will love the ground.

LEOPARDSTOWN
"Leopardstown hospitality worth the visit alone.

IRISH TEAM
"NOTUS DE LA TOUR and SONA SASTA are on their way to Leopardstown today (24.12.2011). We're running NOTUS DE LA TOUR over 2m in the Grade 1 novice chase - generously sponsored by the Racing Post, I should add- on Boxing Day and he'll love the conditions. He was a an easy winner of his first two chases and his Exeter third behind WALKON under a penalty, which we knew was good form anyway, has been franked by runner-up ZAYNAR'S win at Ascot. ROBBIE POWER rides.

"SONA SASTA runs in the Paddy Power Chase on Tuesday, a 0-145 handicap with e190,000 added, which is tremendous prize-money and why we are going. He was a good second at Chepstow last time and 3m on soft ground is ideal.

"They couldn't be more helpful at Leopardstown and I know the staff will be well looked after. In fact, I hear they're being put up at Killiney Castle, so it sounds as if they might have a better Christmas than me!"

"Whatever happened to... Lewes Racecourse?
The late 'Towser' Gosden, father of Newmarket trainer John, sent out Aggressor to win the 1960 King George at Ascot, while his successor Gordon Smyth landed the 1966 Derby with Charlottown.
Auriol Sinclair, who was the second woman to obtain a licence, trained there with great success in the 1960s, and at nearby Telscombe, James Hackett saddled Shannon Lass to win the 1902 Grand National."

A long month – and a cruel one

By Ian Carnaby

"John Bolton’s career touches on a vanished England
John Bolton’s career touches on a vanished England, where a policeman might give you a clip round the ear, Southampton and Portsmouth supporters stood together and the very idea that women might hold a licence to train horses was enough to induce apoplexy in Portman Square.

"So, until Florence Nagle wore down the authorities, John held the licence for Auriol Sinclair and a very successful pair they were, landing some well-organised coups, most notably Magic Boy in the 1958 Wokingham at Royal Ascot. Talking of a vanished England, he had only 7st 5lb to carry."
Auriol Sinclair
One of the pioneers among female trainers in the 1960s and the first to win major races and to record 100 winners. Ran a successful gambling stable as she loved a tilt at the ring, and famously once apprehended an escaping prisoner from Lewes jail, next to her yard, with a pitchfork.

RODNEY MASTERS TODAY'S BIG TALKING POINT
"ON a new test for the emperor of staying hurdlers at Ascot today.
"BIG BUCK'S rivals have right angle in bid to usurp king ......
"WHILE it is no more than a straw for punters to clutch while they mull over whether to take on the likely 1-4 BIG BUCK'S at Ascot, it is a statistical straw to chew on nevertheless. Today is when we will find out if the emperor of staying hurdlers has an Achilles heel.
"His career has embraced 33 races. For the 34th he will step on to a right-handed course for the first time in an attempt to stretch an unbeaten sequence to 14 in a Long Walk Hurdle which has been renamed in honour of LOUGH DERG, who has been recently retired after on more than one occasion being humbled by BIG BUCK'S.

"All thought can be confidently dismissed that connections of the three-time World Hurdle winner have deliberately ducked the right-handed option. He would most certainly have contested the two most recent runnings of this corresponding race at Ascot but the weather intervened necessitating a reschedule to Newbury. Of course, BIG BUCK'S won them, and he beat the David Pipe-trained LOUGH DERG on both occasions.
"All credit to Pipe for consistently putting up the chief opponent to the champion over the years of his domination.
"On five occasions the front-running LOUGH DERG tried so honourably, only to find the champion come lobbing by between the final two flights.
"Then Pipe's GRANDS CRUS went into the ring last spring.
"Throughout the reign of BIG BUCK'S no rival has finished any closer than the length and three-quarters that separated them in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle. Although by Aintree that margin had grown to five lengths - and GRANDS CRUS was sent chasing.
"Undeterred, Pipe fields another today. DYNASTE, like GRANDS CRUS a grey, impressed many with the sheer power of his dominance in Haydock's Grade 3 fixed brush handicap, a race Pipe had won the previous season with GRANDS CRUS. If there is any sign of that Achilles heel, this may be the day for Pipe.
"We know for definite it will not be Pipe's day in the Ladbroke Hurdle, the £150,000 handicap that his and Nicky Henderson's stable have dominated.  Between them they have won six of the seven most recent runnings. Pipe is without a runner today, while Henderson is represented by GIBB RIVER and RAJDHANI EXPRESS.

"However it is the booking of TONY McCOY for the Edward O'Grady-trained, non - JP McManus-owned SAILORS WARN that catches the eye."

RP TOM SEGAL PRICEWISE  The Punters Champion had this to say about  CANNINGTON BROOK this morning, "Too good at the weights. Has long threatened to deliver more than he has achieved, but he has been highly tried by Colin Tizzard and has been held back by some sloppy jumping errors. However, he has still shown a level of form that makes him look a fairly handicapped horse off his current mark and it is interesting to note that he has had a few sessions with jumping guru YOGI BREISNER. If his jumping improves from going back to school there is every reason to expect improvement and he is  one that will relish the ground. On his seasonal reappearance, when probably in need of the run, CANNINGTON BROOK was far from disgraced in what was a decent race at Chepstow and, with that run under his belt, I expect him to go close."

RP Jon Lees Reports  November 14th  2010 2:56
"It all happened very quick," Williams said. "I looked across at the arm and I could see it was facing the wrong direction. I tried to forget about it."

"CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS faces further surgery on his left arm on Monday as a result of the fractures he suffered to both arms in a fall at Cheltenham on Saturday.
"The jump jockey was in theatre for five hours on Saturday night after his mount BESHABAR was brought down at the second-last fence of the 3m novice chase. Williams, who was taken to Cheltenham General Hospital, suffered a compound fracture in two places on his left arm and a small fracture in the right arm, injuries that are likely to keep him out of action for some time.
"The jockey was interviewed from his hospital bed on Channel 4 Racing on Sunday but did not know when he would be fit to return to the saddle.

"His injuries included a snapped humerus and tendon. "They said I was very, very lucky as it was the only tendon in the arm which was immaterial. You don't really need it. They stitched that up anyway, but they couldn't stitch the [left] arm up because it was so swollen so it was all left open. I go back into theatre tomorrow."

JOHN (Mac) McCRIRICK The Punters Champion BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE
Mac brings us key news from the Racing Post and daily papers. Speaking up about
the Bloodhorse Illiterate Whip Review. Mac says what a relief it is that the unsightly spectacle of horses being whipped in races has stopped in the main.
JMC Turfcall "We are all still waiting for the BHA'S Bloodhorse Literate Whip Review to date. It must be very difficult for all licenced jockeys' worldwide to be regulated by bloodhorse illiterate regulators, to say nothing about the horses, and all the young ones just starting out hoping to achieve bloodhorse literacy themselves, to be so badly misunderstood."

JOHN (Greatest Jockey) FRANCOME BLOODHORSE LITERATE
"A lifetimes experience to date, shared with the greatest professional horsemen and the greatest racehorses.”
JMC Turfcall  A shining light on the bloodhorse literacy front that so desperately needs to be recognised properly by the powers that be and the public world wide. "
John has his Christmas jersey on already; will he be heading off to Waitrose to get some good food in for Christmas, perhaps he will be getting some ideas from Delia Smith.
ALICE (Saucy Minx) PLUNKETT BLOODHORSE LITERATE
What is it like being a woman in such a male dominated sport?
"I think in racing for show it’s a very male dominated sport but I think that I was lucky that I had such great support from the trainers that I worked for and actually if you have a lot of success of a woman you get an advantage because you stand out from the crowd.
"I think that in eventing its one of the few sports where men and women compete on level terms and women are incredibly successful within the sport. If you look back through the years, the likes of Ginny Elliot and Lucinda Green are real good representations of the sport and at the moment, Mary King who has 2 kids herself and got the silver medal at the European Championships in her mid forties! So women have a great history within the sport and are very successful."
