HORSERACING TEAM TODAY ARE:

NICK (Lord Snooty) LUCK HOST PRESENTER, BROADCASTER
Bloodhorse Illiterate
http://www.horseracing.uk.net/nick-luck.html

GUEST STAR FRANKIE DETTORI BLOODHORSE LITERATE TOP TRUE HORSEMAN
FLAT RACE JOCKEY OF WORLD RENOWN. C4 GUEST TEST SCORE, FRANKIE GOES DIRECTLY TO TOP SPOT ON C4 LEADER BOARD.

FRANKIE partners the three year old colt CASAMENTO  in this afternoon's 2000 Guineas at 3.10pm. Trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni for Godolphin.

BORN: December 15, 1970
NATIONALITY: Italian
REGULAR JOCKEY FOR: Godolphin
HEIGHT: 5ft 5ins

"FRANKIE’S FATHER , Gianfranco, was one of the greatest Italian jockeys. Amongst his successes were the 1975 and 1976 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Frankie started his apprenticeship in Newmarket, in 1985, with fellow Italian Luca Cumani.

The following winter he returned to Italy and rode 17 winners.

His first UK winner was Lizzy Hare, and was achieved on June 9, 1987 at Goodwood. However, his first ever career win was on Rif in 1986, at the Italian racecourse of Turin.

In 1990, Frankie rode 100 winners in a season (the first teenager to do so since Lester Piggott). He also won his first Group 1 race, with a masterful ride on Mark of Distinction in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, at Ascot.

By the summer of 2003, Frankie had won a phenomenal 298 Group races, including 116 Group 1, 86 Group 2 and 96 Group 3.

Dubai Millennium, who won nine out of ten races during his racing career, including The Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Dubai World Cup in 2000, is the best horse that Frankie has ever ridden and also his personal favourite.

Frankie’s ‘Magnificent Seven’, achieved at Ascot on 28 September 1996, is his greatest racing memory. On this day he won all seven races on the card, at the staggering odds of 6,720/1.

He finally won the World’s most famous race, the Epsom Derby, in 2007 on board Peter Chapple-Hyam’s Authorized in impressive style. He then went on to win the French equivalent, the Prix du Jockey Club, at Chantilly the following day on Lawman.

Frankie has been fortunate on the track and has incurred no significant racing injuries. However, in 2000 he was involved in a serious aircraft accident, whilst travelling to Goodwood racecourse with Ray Cochrane. The aircraft crashed, killing the pilot and leaving Ray seriously injured. Frankie was lucky to escape with only minor injuries.

In recent years Frankie has partnered many top horses such as Doyen, Sulamani, Dubawi, Refuse To Bend, Iffraaj and the ill-fated Electrocutionist.
Frankie has won almost every major race in the flat calendar, but was last Champion Jockey in 2004

BRITISH HORSERACING AUTHORITY (BHA) PERSONNEL PUT ON TO REVIEW THE USE OF THE WHIP AS FOLLOWS:-

CHRIS BRAND, BHA BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE FOR BHA.

JAMIE STIER, BHA BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE DIRECTOR OF RACEDAY OPERATIONS

TIM MORRIS  BHA BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE PROFESSOR OF EQUINE SCIENCE AND WELFARE.

PAUL STRUTHERS BHA BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS.

PROFESSOR TIM MORRIS, BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE MADE A RECENT APPEARANCE ON THE MORNING LINE. SEATED NEXT TO TOP PROFESSIONAL BLOODHORSE LITERATE HORSEMAN  JOHN (FRANCS) FRANCOME. WHO LOOKED THROUGHOUT ILL AT EASE THROUGHOUT, FAR TO POLITE TO SAY ANYTHING AT ALL HIMSELF.

TURFCALL CALLS THE BHA INTO QUESTION AS TO THE SUITABILITY OF THE FOLLOWING BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE PEOPLE EMPLOYED BY THE BHA BRAND, STIER, MORRIS AND STRUTHERS WHOM THEY ARE PLACING IN CHARGE OF A WHIP REVIEW WHICH BHA STATE WILL TAKE THEM  5 MONTHS TO COMPLETE..

WHAT WOULD BRAND, STIER, MORRIS AND STRUTHERS  KNOW ABOUT HANDLING AND RIDING OUT THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSES PLACED WITH LICENSED TRAINERS BY OWNERS?

CAN BRAND, STIER, MORRIS AND STRUTHERS RIDE TO THE STANDARD REQUIURED OF A PROFESSIONALLY  LICENCED JOCKEY?

DO BRAND, STIER, MORRIS AND STRUTHERS KNOW HOW TO HOLD A WHIP FOR STARTERS?

CAN BRAND, STIER, MORRIS AND STRUTHERS CONFIRM THE PURPOSE OF A WHIP?

ARE BRAND, STIER, MORRIS AND STRUTHERS ABLE TO SET OUT ON PAPER A LIST OF EXAMPLES AS TO WHEN AND HOW A WHIP CAN FAIRLY AND REASONABLY COME INTO PLAY?

PAUL EACOTT REPORTS FOR THE RACING POST TODAY

FINDINGS INTO WHIP REVIEW TO BE MADE KNOWN BY OCTOBER  REPORTS.“
J MARGARET CLARKE COMMENT FOR TURFCALL IN RED
“Any changes to the way the whip is used in British horseracing will come into place in October after an extensive review has taken place, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced yesterday. So what is to happen in the 5 months in between? Plus how is it that the British regulators have not bothered to do anything about this whip issue long ago? Decades ago? It could be said that the British regulators have sat back and allowed horses to be abused by the whip …turning a blind eye …for a very long time .... they have been negligent in their regulation duties.

“The BHA board approved a timetable for the whip review on Thursday that will result in the findings being published, and agreed actions implemented, by October.

A separate review into the Grand National will be conducted over a similar timescale. There is a big difference in the financial angle between the winner of the Grand National and the horse that is placed second, is there not …?

OK for a jockey to risk using his whip to ensure he can collect the biggest prize, risking the likelihood of a few days suspension for a whip related punishment …

“ Chris Brand, acting chief executive for the BHA said ‘We have already announced that we are taking a lead on the reviews into acceptable whip use and the Grand National. As the sport’s regulator, it is our natural role to do so. So how is it that what you term here to be ‘your natural role’ you have not bothered about this whip issue before now?

For years, decades Mr Brand British regulators have shown negligence beyond all belief over this one serious issue alone. You have allowed young riders to be led astray, to develop bad habits.

“Both reviews will be concluded by October. They are crucial for the sport, and it is vital that our approach is considered and measured, and that we spend the time it requires in getting it right. How can you possibly in your wildest dreams believe that you can put this right whilst you have sat back and let it go on getting worse and worse daily? How can you believe that you can kid yourselves that you will be able to put this issue right when you are all bloodhorse illiterate?

“Determining how the whip is best regulated within racing for the overall good of the sport is without doubt the most far-reaching issue. You Mr Brand to determine this? Impossible. You will need to employ true Bloodhorse Literate achievers to put this one right, and keep it right in the future, you owe this to all the young ones who may choose a career in horseracing. EG you need true horsemen as Yogi Breisner, as Monty RobertHenry Cecil Sir Michael Stoute, John Gosden,Rachel Hood, top professionals who most definately do know about the needs and welfare of thoroughbred horses
placed in training. The kindness and skills of true horseman. The knowing when a horse is settled  confident and happy.

“The reviews will be led by BHA director of raceday operations Jamie Stier, working with the BHA director of equine science and welfare Professor Tim Morris and head of communications Paul Struthers. These people you state here Mr Brand are all totally incompetent in any and all matters related to the use of the whip.

“Steir said: ‘We should not lose sight of the fact Britain has led the way among major racing nations in its rules on acceptable whip use and on the introduction of the cushioned whip. Your sight Mr Steir?

“The use of the whip is a welfare issue but because of our rules and penalties is not a welfare problem. The perception of some is that it is cruel, but the reality is that it is due to our rules and only allowing the cushioned whip that was specifically designed not to cause pain, it is fundamentally not cruel. Total rubbish

“We need to acknowledge the thoughts of the wider community on the use of the whip, but be measured in our thinking. Total Rubbish. The wider community will be just as useless on the subject as you are Mr Brand, you are all Bloodhorse Illiterate.

“We will seek the views and input from various sectors within the industry, take into account focused opinion research and the views of those who watch and bet on racing.
Total Rubbish. The wider community will be just as useless on the subject as you are Mr Brand, you are talking here about a mass of Bloodhorse Illiterate people.

“Towcester’s request to host races under hands and heels rules-very different to a whip ban – will be considered as part of this review.” There is already a Series of Hands and Heels Races all these races go ahead no problem.

FRANKEL partner TOM QUEALLY trainer Henry Cecil won the 2000 Guineas this afternoon no problem. TOM QUEALLY always rides FRANKEL with his hands and heels. Henry Cecil would not allow any of the horses placed in his care by owners to suffer whip abuse of any sort.

DAVID ASHFORTH REPORTS FOR THE RACING POST APRIL 18th 2011

“TIME FOR A NEW BAN RACING SHOULD OUTLAW THE USE OF THE WHIP IN  A FINISH  AND REAP THE BENEFITS .

‘SPECIAL FOCUS THE WHIP’ PAGE 7.

David issues a call for radical modification of the rules to allow the whip to be used only for safety and correction.

“The current instructions have raised the standard of race-riding and improved the way in which jockeys use their whips but the sport needs to move on again.”

“Among major racing nations Britain has led the world in regulating the use of the whip. Now the sport needs to move forward again, for its own benefit, by allowing the whip to be used only for safety or correction.

“When the Jockey Club introduced restrictions on the use of the whip in 1993 it provoked a hailstorm of criticism, including accusations that the stewards were listening to people who were not racing professions and who’s opinions should be ignored.

“The instructions were modified and progressively refined but the Jockey Club stood firm, insisting that what was acceptable in the 1980’s was not acceptable in the 1990’s, and that public perception mattered.

“Public attitudes on what is acceptable will surely continue to move in only one direction. The wider public which racing wants to attract does not enjoy watching horses being whipped.  It makes the sport less attractive to them and is likely to be an alienating feature of racing for the next generation of potential racefans.

“Admittedly, that is an assertion without the benefit of supporting evidence but if a survey of opinions and reactions to the sight of horses being whipped was carried out, I would be very surprised if the results did not support my assertions.

“Racing which is now more accepting of the need to take account of how the sport is viewed outside the core racing community, should act sooner rather than later.

“Defenders of the present whip regime can point out how well  racehorses are looked after, and cared for, and loved, how little is asked of them in return, how jockeys have no wish to abuse horses, insist that horses are not being abused, and emphasise how tight the whip rules are.

“They can point to modifications made to the whip itself. They can argue until they are blue in the face but none of these points addresses the one at issue – that racing is a sport in which animals are hit, and routinely hit.  That reduces the sport’s appeal and increases the scope for criticisms.

“It is bad for racing’s image, and image does matter.

“The current instructions are now as clear and concise as possible and an accepted part of the conduct of racing. …..  . They have raised the standard of race-riding and improved the way in which jockeys use the whips, which is much more sophisticated than it was  20 years ago, but the sport needs to move on again.

“I still regularly find myself saying to the television screen  “Don’t hit it again, particularly in the case of  horses exhausted at the end of a gruelling jump race but also in some other situations. It is not an uplifting sight, and the distinction between coercing a horse by improper use of the whip  and encouraging it by using the whip within the constraints of the rules is surely lost on everyone who is not already a committed racefan.

“Jockeys hit horses in the belief, often but not always justified, that the horse will thereby arrive at the winning post sooner. What would the sport loose if jockeys were not allowed to use whips to encourage their  mounts? "
“The majority of results would be the same. Horses who readily give their all would win
rather more races, while those who need to be whipped to exert themselves fully would win rather less.

“The best jockeys,  most adept at keeping their mount balanced and driving it forward with the skilful use of aids other than  the whip, would win even more races, while less able, less fit jockeys, often the first to resort to the whip would win fewer races. That would be no bad thing. So what would be lost?

“Presumably the argument is that watching jockeys ride whip finishes is an integral part of the thrill of a race and, without it racing would be less exciting, a sadly sanitised version. I am not convinced.  Current racefans are certainly used to watching whip finishes but do they find the whip-free finishes of certain races currently staged for apprentice, amateur and conditional riders, much  less exciting?

“Would the next generation of watchers, introduced to a sport in which the whip could be used only for safety and correction purposes, long to see races as they were in the good old days? I doubt it

“Whatever would be lost would be more than compensated for by the sports increased  attractiveness  and acceptability to a wider, newer audience. The whip would not be banned. Jockeys would still be required to carry a whip but its use would be restricted largely to avoid dangerous situations and correcting horses who are veering off a straight line and in danger of causing interference.

“Under the new regime, there would be a stronger case for disqualifying  horses, as well as punishing jockeys , for misuse of the whip. It will happen . It’s a matter of when.”  END

THE WHIP
The whip does not encourage, it forcefully inflicts pain, to both horses and children, in any and all situations where an animal or a person is repremanded in this way. The consiquences of such experiences, damaging.

BLUSHING ET suffered dreadful abuse before he was sent to Monty, as this documentary shows.

DAVID'S CALL - "For radical modification of the rules to allow the whip to be used only for safety and correction. The whip would not be banned. Jockeys would still be required to carry a whip but its use would be restricted. Correcting horses who are veering off a straight line and in danger of causing interference.

DAVID'S CALL - “Defenders of the present whip regime can point out how well racehorses
are looked after, and cared for, and loved, how little is asked of them in return, how jockeys have no wish to abuse horses, insist that horses are not being abused, and emphasise how tight the whip rules are."

MARGARET'S CALL - Sadly this is not always the case as Monty Robert's work worldwide shows. Monty found out at a very early age how dreadfully cruel his own father was with horses. http://www.turfcall.co.uk/turfcall2/Monty.html

THE RACING POST BRING US “THE RETURN OF FRANKEL

LEE MOTTERSHEAD REPORTS ON THE FACINATING COLT FRANKEL AS HE SETS OUT ON HIS THREE YEAR OLD CAMPAIGN AT NEWBURY IN THE GREENHAM STAKES
THIS AFTERNOON AT 3.10pm.
“It’s the moment we’ve waited all winter for as last season’s champion juvenile and red-hot 2,000 Guineas and Derby favourite steps out on the track again for the Greenham Stakes at Newbury.

“Eagerly awaited doesn’t begin to describe it . The day Flat fans have longed for all winter is finally here.”

“Hearts will beat faster as the moment draws near. This day, and indeed the Flat season’s spring awakening , revolves around the return of FRANKEL.

“Rarely has a colt embarked on a Classic campaign with so lofty a reputation or such unshakeably strong credentials.

“Nor can a star on the Flat have emerged from winter hiding with the enormous goodwill that is willing him to succeed.

“The FRANKEL we saw at two was exceptional , a juvenile of the very highest order, but the slate has been wiped clean. All that he did then counts for nothing in the here and now.

“There are many reasons to be positive but Cecil, without a win at this week’s Craven meeting, is remaining calm and measured on the cusp of his renaissance’s most pressurised afternoon.

‘Win or loose, he will come on quite a bit for the run,’ said Cecil. ‘I’m very happy with him, but he needs a trial before the Guineas. I’d like to see him run very well but I do know that he will improve for the race. We haven’t been able to get him on the grass but hopefully he has done enough to give a very good account of himself. We’ll see.”

FRANKEL WINS EASILY THE GREENHAM  STAKES THIS AFTERNOON. VERY EXCITING, HENRY CECIL HIS TRAINER WILL BE WELL PLEASED.
DID IT WELL 'ALL HANDS AND HEELS QUEALLY.'

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

C4 this morning welcomed DR TIM MORRIS on the 7.55am  program  – MORRIS  Director of Equine Science and Welfare for the British Horseracing Authority, and asked him what the BHA regulators have to say  about the dreadful outcome to last Saturday's Grand National. Paying attention and showing the many newspaper headlines of the horrific events that occured during the race.

Clearly Dr Tim was completely out of his depth on issues such as these, his bloodhorse illiteracy blatantly obvious.

DR TIM MORRIS' BACKGROUND:
"Dr Tim began as Director of Equine Science & Welfare in January 2008. He previously worked at GlaxoSmithKline and brings to the Authority a wide experience and expertise in veterinary science and animal welfare.

After qualification from the Royal Veterinary College, he spent some time in thoroughbred stud and mixed veterinary practice before returning to the College to complete a PhD.

Since then he has held a range of roles in research, clinical veterinary medicine and in public affairs for GlaxoSmithKline.

He is a visiting professor at the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and held a large number of roles in veterinary professional organisations, industry bodies and animal welfare charities."

Doctor Tim whose perspective within  Equine Science and Welfare, nothing at all to do with  Bloodhorse Literacy so well out of his depth and perspective here

HORSERACING A UNIQUE AND REMARKABLE SPORT
Bloodhorse Illiteracy among thoroughbred racehorses in training needs to be recognised for what it is, one of the most dangerous areas for such a person to be in. Such a bloodhorse illiterate person in and around horses is inviting danger and can easily create much greater danger.

LEE MOTTERSHEAD REPORTS FOR THE RACING POST TODAY FRIDAY 15 APRIL 2011

“FALLON TO APPEAL BAN THAT WILL COST HIM DEAR”

“Former champion set to miss Guineas, Chester and Ascot.

“KIEREN FALLON yesterday admitted he has little chance of winning a reprieve to ride Craven Stakes winner NATIVE KHAN in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas as he readied himself for another battle with racing officialdom following the ten-day suspension handed to him at Kempton late on Wednesday.(13 April 2011 Race 5. 8.00pm 1m3f (AW))

“FALLON will miss both Newmarket’s Guineas, the prestigious Chester May meeting and Ascot’s Sagaro Stakes fixture if unsuccessful in an appeal against a suspension handed out after a Kempton contest worth just £1,748.31 to the winner.

“ The former champion was given the ban, which runs from April 27 to May 6, after being judged guilty of not riding out to the finish on the James Fanshawe trained SUKHOTHAI, an offence the Kempton stewards decided had prevented the 11-1 handicapper from holding off the fast finishing and wide –running WATERED SILK for second.

“The ten-day punishment was the minimum that could be handed to FALLON who will thus need to be cleared of all responsibility in order to win an appeal.

“I’m not going to lie down without a fight, , but I think I’m fighting a loosing battle, said FALLON . The statistics are not in my favour. You don’t win on appeal, but that doesn’t mean I won’t appeal.”

“Assessing the Kempton ride, FALLON, awaiting guidance from the Professional Jockeys’ Association chief executive KEVIN DARLEY, said: ‘I thought I rode to the line so I was surprised to be called in. The horse was getting tired and had no more to give. I don’t think I did anything wrong. The second always had me and I was the third best, which is the most frustrating thing. It didn’t make any difference to the result.

“I didn’t stop riding. I worked from behind and I used my body rather than ride their heads off, especially when they’re trying to stop. It’s not really a blow as I’m still here and I’m not injured, but it’s not what you want to happen.

“FALLON, who must lodge his appeal no later than today, added ‘It’s a fine line and sometimes you hope they would use their discretion. Does the penalty fit the crime? I’m missing the Guineas, the May meeting at Chester and a day at Ascot, all because of a little race worth £1,700. That’s a lot to miss if I made a mistake, which I don’t think I did.”

J Margaret Clarke comment for Turfcall
A photograph accompanied this report (Page 3) taken by Edward Whitaker (Racingpost .com/photos) Showing the grey three year old filly SUKHOTHAI challenging to the line with her head stretched right out giving her all with an expression on her face that she could give no more and was close to exhaustion.

THIS ONE PHOTOGRAPH ALONE SHOULD PROVE WITHOUT ANY SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT ALL FALLON TOLD THE STEWARDS WAS TRUE, FALLON NEED NOT SAY ONE WORD TO DEFEND THE WAY THAT HE RODE SUKHOTHAI BECAUSE THIS ONE PHOTOGRAPH SAYS IT ALL.

At Aintree last Saturday we saw BALLIBRIGGS partnered by JASON MAGUIRE win the Grand National. The acting stewards at that meeting need to thank their lucky stars that BALLYBRIGGS did not drop dead after crossing the winning line, it was a miracle that he was helped so quickly by having buckets and buckets of water chucked over him, saving his life. Jason Maguire who partnered BALLYBRIGGS received a five day excessive use of the whip ban.

It looked really bad to see the winning jockey walking in by himself, without his horse..

This 2011 Grand National threw up all sorts of contentious issues that need sorting by Bloodhorse Literate people, as a matter of dire urgency. No wonder Clare Balding was close to tears.

The BHA a harsh and cruel authority not fit for purpose.
