“JOHN (Mac) McCRIRICK  (The Punters Champion) is clinging to hope that he might appear on Channel 4 Racing at some point in the future as the final chapter closes on a colourful era.


“Today sees the final day of the long-standing Channel 4 team, with the Morning Line and racing from Newbury, Doncaster and Leopardstown bringing down the curtain.
 
“IMG Media takes over from Highflyer in producing Channel 4 Racing, which will be solely responsible for the sport on TV after BBC coverage came to an end.

 
“McCririck, 72, is one of several familiar faces who will not be on the new team.

 Mac is very knowledgeable about punting.
 
Mac’s lifetime experience, he really knows what he is talking about. Mac is a colourful character. The young ones today need to be allowed the chance to learn true punting skills.
 
 It is dangerous to throw the skills that Mac has achieved away. Just as equally dangerous
 as to throw away the skills of all those who have achieved true bloodhorse literacy in their own right.

Tony McCoy partners him today. THE GIANT BOLSTER needs to be ridden on the bridle,  into each of the 18 big Kempton Chase Fences all of which have to be jumped accurately at speed, and with all the other runners around about that can interupt concentration. No armchair dream, but a tough reality. Make no mistake about that.

 JON LEES REPORTS: "LONG RUN, who seemed destined for greatness 21 months ago only  to be shoved off course by a rejuvenated Kauto Star last season, scrambled his way back on to the right path with a last- gasp King George victory that proved restorative for the credibility of the horse and amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen ....
 
JMC Turfcall comment: With the amazing weather,  rain, rain and yet still more rain the 2012 King George was run in far from ideal conditions.  LONG RUN and SAM struggling over the last two fences LONG RUN showing just how tired he actually was, and how brave he was, literally only just managing to scramble over the final fence,  if in wonky style intact. LONG RUN  was able to struggle through to win for SAM a truly great performance.  Owner of LONG RUN Sam's dad, Robert Waley Cohen and trainer, Nicky Henderson  thrilled to bits and rightly so. What a wonderful horse, dad and trainer SAM has. Jump racing in far safer hands whilst Robert and Nicky are around.
