"Brendan Powell Jr saddled three horses to victory at Plumpton in December

"Jockey Brendan Powell cannot wait for his 17th birthday on 26 January, and nor can his family, friends and fellow riders.

"Getting a driving test organised will be high on the agenda for the sought-after teenager, whose father, also Brendan, won the Grand National during a distinguished race-riding career.


"Powell Jr's recent run of success has seen him clocking up the miles since Christmas with sorties as far afield as Leicester, Taunton and Plumpton, though, clearly, with others behind the wheel.
"However, despite his tender years, he has demonstrated fine driving skills from the saddle, and goes into 2012 tipped to go steadily up the gears, to the very top.

"It's bred into me; it's in my blood, so it's more or less the only route I was going to take," he said."



"It's great fun, obviously,  there are dangers that come with it, but the rush you get from riding around places like this is unreal.

"It makes you feel like you are flying most of the time; it doesn't get much better."

"Brendan Powell junior was not even a twinkle in the eye when his father famously won the 1988 Grand National on Rhyme N'Reason, even though the horse all but fell at Becher's Brook.


In total, the now 50-year-old entered the winner's circle 700 times - Dublin Flyer and Panto Prince were two particular favourites - and earned something of an 'iron man' image, bouncing back from several heavy falls.

RACING SHOULD BE DOING ALL IT CAN TO OBTAIN AN EXTENTION
 OF THE STATUS QUO

"YOU get little in life for free, although the Lanzarote Hurdle is an exception. So too, is the Betfred Classic Chase, as was last week's 32 Tolworth Hurdle, not to mention those two handicaps from Wincanton. Assuming you stayed at home and watched on the box, none of them cost you anything. In the modern television age, that really does buck almost all the trends.

"Consider this Saturday as an example. Armchair sports fans can enjoy Heineken Cup
rugby union, Championship football, the test cricket from Australia and the latest European golf tour event. There is, however, a catch. To see any of the above, you will need to subscribe to a Sky Sports package. Not so racing fans, who on Saturday get to see seven live races from Warwick and Kempton Park for nothing. Why they do is one of the wonders of the modern television world.

"Is the Lanzarote a bigger sporting event than the Heineken Cup? If your not sure, consider how much newsprint other national newspapers devote to the two events in the build-up to Saturday and then afterwards on Sunday. On the day itself, it will be different. Tabloids will allocate a very respectable amount of space to Kempton's feature handicap hurdle, but they will do so for one reason and one reason only - the race is being shown live  on terrestrial television. Assessed in terms of its sporting significance it should not be, but in terms of terrestrial television exposure, racing continues to punch well above its weight.

"Judged on most accepted criteria , the Lanzarote and Tolworth Hurdles are not terrestrial events. The Tolworth's conclusion was not shown on the vast majority of evening news bulletins. The Lanzarote will be similarly ignored. Quite right, too.

"They have their place but their place is on a dedicated racing channel. That is not to demean them but to contextualise them against the weekend's other sport. Somehow they maintain a terrestrial platform. Racing should now be doing all it can to obtain an extension of the status quo.

"Where we are now stems from where we once were. In the days of Grandstand and World Of Sport, racing was brought into living rooms every Saturday, but so, too, on a less regular basis admittedly, were sport like bobsleigh, badminton, showjumping and speedway. Save for a few sporadic appearances, they have disappeared into the world of satellite channels. Racing has managed to survive, but over the coming weeks its free-to-air future will hinge on talks between the BBC, Channel 4 and the racecourses, principally through Racing UK's management body RMG.

"For terrestrial viewers and those who believe racing benefits hugely from terrestrial exposure - and it does - the preferred outcome would be contract extensions. Save for the Cheltenham Festival, the BBC has everything that it wants. For being so selective, it should not be criticised. Those who say the BBC deserves to be stripped of its crown jewels for failing to support racing more widely are missing the point. With a few minor exceptions, the BBC televises all the racing that deserves to be covered on the BBC or indeed on any other terrestrial channel. It is racing's great good fortune that Channel 4 is prepared to house the rest. This Saturday, Channel 4 will show two hours of live racing, having already broadcast a one-hour magazine programme. It will do the same every Saturday between now and December 29. Whether it will be showing racing on Saturday, January 5, 2013 we do not yet know.
"WE SHOULD want it to and RMG should be doing everything in its power to make sure that happens. RMG and the racecourses, perfectly understandably want a better financial return from the latest round of rights negotiations. At the moment, the BBC pays around £2.5 million a year for its racing portfolio. Channel 4 is paid up to £1m a year in return for its ongoing commitment.

"One option would be to offer Channel 4 what the BBC now owns. That is not out of the question. Channel 4 would undoubtedly pay for a contract that included the Grand National and, if that was the outcome, RMG could maintain weekly coverage while being able to say that racing no longer paid to have the sport televised.

RMG, the racecourses and racing would be first advised to look at what we have now and to be grateful. Racing is not paid a fortune for its rights because they are not worth a fortune. The sport has a committed following that delivers impressive audience shares but racing is expensive to broadcast, not particularly fashionable and not an easy sell to advertisers. That so, to have both the promotion of our biggest races on the BBC and a weekly platform from an enthusiastic team on Channel 4 is something for which we should be thankful.

"Racing is right to seek the best possible terrestrial deal it can get. However, if we.  take time to think of the alternatives, we might come to the conclusion that the best possible terrestrial deal is the one we have now. More of the same would be a very decent result."
