BLOODHORSE LITERATE IN HIS OWN RIGHT
"A lifetimes experience to date, shared with the greatest professional horsemen and the greatest racehorses." A shining light on the bloodhorse literacy front that so desperately needs to be recognised properly by the powers that be world wide.

Born in Swindon the son of a railway fireman, his family had no connection with the horse racing world. At sixteen years old he became apprentice to Lambourn trainer Fred Winter and so began his career as a jockey. He rode a total of 1,138 winners, his last being in April 1985. During the course of his career he was NH Champion Jockey seven times.

After retiring Francome was awarded the MBE in 1986 for services to racing. He was a trainer for 18 months before becoming a TV presenterfor Channel 4's horse racing broadcasts. Like another former jockey, Dick Francis, Francome has taken to writing works of fiction. PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

RACING POST REPORT FRIDAY MARCH 2nd 2012
TOM BOYLE "HORSEMAN'S GROUP (HG) FURY OVER LEVY DISCUSSIONS
"THE HORSEMAN'S GROUP has branded levy talks between the three
biggest racecourse groups and major bookmakers unacceptable and
accused Racecourse Association members of working against racing's interests.
"The discussions, revealed by the Racing Post on Sunday (26.02.2012)
are aimed at ending the sport's reliance on thelevy as the government seeks to remove itself from racing's funding mechanism and bring off-shore betting under the Gambling Commission licensing structures.

"The HG believes it is being excluded from the debate and in an open letter to
Ian Barlow of the RCA, chairman Paul Dixon said the talks were fuelled by "vested interests" and he accused the RCA of working to present his members with a "fait accompli".

"Dixon wrote: 'secret meetings and agreements cobbled together by a couple of vested interests is no way for an industry of this importance to proceed, however much the major bookmakers might prefer it.

"This type of unilateral action by racecourses is unacceptable , coming - as it does - in the middle of a process which is supposed to end up with the commercial elements of our sport being led jointly by you, the racecourses, and us, the Horseman's Group.
"The major racecourses should not, Dixon said, be taking part in any negotiations " if racing is to achieve the best deal possible".
"The racecourses' main negotiation tool with bookmakers, said Dixon, was the size of the fixture list. "Uniquely among those involved in racing, the racecourses' declared point of view - for their own commercial reasons - is that, broadly, the larger the fixture list, the better, not least because they get paid more in media rights fees for every race they stage ."
"Dixon added: "Your members are - in business terminology - conflicted, owing to the hugely significant commercial negotiations they have with bookmakers."
"Representatives of William Hill, Coral and Ladbrokes have held discussions with their counterparts at Arena Leisure, Jockey Club Racecourses and Northern Racing on a proposal to continue the levy on the lines of the current scheme, but for longer than 12 months.
"A three - to - five - year deal could see bookmakers guarantee £75 million in the first year rising to £85m in the final years. Meanwhile, the two parties would work on fixture lists and a racing programme designed to maximise racing's return from betting.
"While Dixon said the HG wanted to see the shortcomings of the levy system addressed and the process of determining it less cumbersome, he added: "That does not, though, mean that the Horseman's Group is going to accept its members' main revenue stream being determined behind its back by other vested interests." END

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
C4 WAR HORSE: THE REAL GRIM STORY
SUNDAY MARCH 4th FROM 8.00pm to 9pm.
HISTORY Fans and (older) children will be interested in the history behind the book/play/film about horses in the first World War, but it does get gruesome, with a sad coda on the postwar fate of the horses. More inspirational is the tale of one thoroughbred called WARRIOR and his part in key cavalry charges, which weren't the anachronism you might think.
But only two per cent of war horses were in the cavalry; the rest were draft horses whose working lives hardly bear thinking about, though the program makes us try. Along the way there are vivid accounts of battles, an explanation of why cavalrymen used straight sword, and insight into a very nasty weapon called a caltrop.
WAR HORSE THE REAL STORY
Archive footage and rare testimony tell the poignant stories of some of the million British horses that served during the First World War. A call up from every farm and country estate in the land resulted in a quarter of a million horses dying. But their finest hour came in spring 1918 when they checked the German advance before helping to win the war."
Director/Producer George Pagliero.

The National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup is one of the Cheltenham Festival’s highlights for amateur jockeys as well as being the longest race run at the festival. The race is run over a distance of 4 miles 1 furlong with entry restricted to 5-year-old and above novices.

The National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup is one of the oldest races at the Cheltenham Festival and has been run more times than any other race at the meeting.
