Born in Swindon the son of a railway fireman, his family had no connection with the horse racing world. At sixteen years old he became apprentice to Lambourn trainer Fred Winter and so began his career as a jockey. He rode a total of 1,138 winners, his last being in April 1985. During the course of his career he was NH Champion Jockey seven times.
After retiring Francome was awarded the MBE in 1986 for services to racing. He was a trainer for 18 months before becoming a TV presenterfor Channel 4's horse racing broadcasts. Like another former jockey, Dick Francis, Francome has taken to writing works of fiction. HISTORY Fans and (older) children will be interested in the history behind the book/play/film about horses in the first World War, but it does get gruesome, with a sad coda on the postwar fate of the horses. More inspirational is the tale of one thoroughbred called WARRIOR and his part in key cavalry charges, which weren't the anachronism you might think.
But only two per cent of war horses were in the cavalry; the rest were draft horses whose working lives hardly bear thinking about, though the program makes us try. Along the way there are vivid accounts of battles, an explanation of why cavalrymen used straight sword, and insight into a very nasty weapon called a caltrop.

A call up from every farm and country estate in the land resulted in a quarter of a million horses dying. The National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup is one of the Cheltenham Festival’s highlights for amateur jockeys as well as being the longest race run at the festival. The race is run over a distance of 4 miles 1 furlong with entry restricted to 5-year-old and above novices.The National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup is one of the oldest races at the Cheltenham Festival and has been run more times than any other race at the meeting. The race is known for attracting large fields, with over 30 runners the norm, with winners often going on to perform well in major grade 3 national hunt races.

During the course of his career he was NH Champion Jockey seven times.
After retiring Francome was awarded the MBE in 1986 for services to racing. He was a trainer for 18 months before becoming a TV presenterfor Channel 4'shorse racing broadcasts. Like another former jockey, Dick Francis, Francome has taken to writing works of fiction. His books have featured on the bestsellerlists.
