PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
THE RACING POST PAGE 8 FRIDAY 3rd DECEMBER 2010 JULIAN MUSCAT meets the former seven- time champion jumps jockey JOHN FRANCOME who talks candidly about his career and the state of racing today.‘I never wanted to be a jockey- it was a means to an end for me.’

John Randall assesses the achievements of a rider who broke the mould. ‘He wins on first ride.' The Sporting Life reported 17-year-old Francome’s first success aboard hurdler MULTIGREY at Worcester in 1970.

“Francome, a Swindon builder’s son, was already attached to Fred Winter’s Lambourn yard and he stayed there for the whole 15 years of his career riding, becoming champion jockey seven times and winning 1,138 races over jumps in Britain – both of which were records at the time.” Francome’s fascinating history unfolds highlighting top professional horsemen from the past, and the wonderful horses that made them the greatest.

Jim McGrath Channel 4 Racing colleague “John has worked for Channel 4 since 1985 and I knew him a bit before then, but in the last 25 years he has become a good friend . Sometimes he is like a big brother, but at other times he reverts to his riding days and he becomes an annoying little nephew . He has got no aura about his achievements – he was a great showjumper as well as a jockey. The thing that marks him as a great person is that he is your friend there is nothing he won’t do for you. He is good fun, but sensible and intelligent as well. I could not speak highly enough of him.”

Francome on Terrestrial television: “Keeping racing on television is vital, but without Sheikh Mohammed the people running racing would have let it disappear. It should be the first thing they set aside when they get their levy money.”

Francome on Racing and bookmakers: “Racing is like a kid on an allowance. Bookmakers hand over £60 million, £100m every year and racing does nothing with it. Why doesn’t racing have its own chain of betting shops? I read that if racing buys the Tote they’d sell off the betting shops, and I think, “Who the hell are these people?” Its scary.”
