RACING POST TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT

ANDREW SCUTTS  on the variety of treats in store for punters this afternoon. “The final day of Glorious Goodwood presents the best of both worlds, as horses aged from two to nine compete at a variety of distances and levels, with the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at the top end.

“For many racegoers and punters, however it will be the sight of 28 sprinters hurtling down hill towards the Stewards Cup winning line – and fanned out across the width of “The most beautiful racecourse in the world’. As Sir Peter O’Sullevan puts it – that will most stir the heart and loosen the vocal cords.

“Such is the competitive nature of the £100,000 Blue Square–sponsored 6f  handicap-winners in the last four years alone have ranged from 6-1 favourite to 40-1 rag-that every runner will have their supporters, but HOOF IT, as last night’s market mover, will have more than most.

“All winners of major races at Glorious Goodwood are afforded generous applause as they make their way back to unsaddle, but should HOOF IT and KIEREN FALLON  beat 27 rivals under 10 stone they will be deserving particularly warm appreciation. That is because no horse has won the Stewards’ Cup carrying more than 9st 10lb since the war. Only two have managed that, while at the other end of the scale PSALMSINGER carried 5st 10lb to victory in 1845!

JMC: CAN the mighty  HOOF IT  (4 10.00)  strike for KIEREN FALLON?
  YES, YES,  YES  13-2 sp

CAN EDINBURGH KNIGHT (4 8.12) strike for JIM CROWLEY?What a race this will be with 28 runners taking part, an amazing and spectacular experience to all those just starting out on the racing road adventure who watch this race.

ASCOT RACECOURSE WILL HOST THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP 2011 NEXT SATURDAY AFTERNOON AUGUST 6th DON’T MISS IT

REVIEW OF THE 2010 DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP
The world’s finest jockeys converge on Ascot, and a string of ‘80s acts perform after racing, we look back at last year’s racing action and this year’s concert.

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup attracts the cream of world riding talent to Ascot, as well as a string of pop legends from the 1980s. The competition on the track comprises of four teams; Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World. Each team has three jockeys with points awarded on a 15-10-7-5-3 basis for the first five home. Rivalry is fierce, not only are the jockeys riding for the team award, the coveted Shergar Cup, but also the Silver Saddle presented to the best individual rider of the day. In 2009, it was all about one man; Richard Hughes. Richard enjoyed an outstanding afternoon's work as a 377-1 treble sealed the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for himself and his Irish teammates.

BROUGH SCOTT (Bloodhorse Literate) RACING POST
"The Duel on the Downs"  for the Qipco Sussex Stakes is like no other unscripted drama on earth. So it has come to this. Just two rivals in against FRANKEL and CANFORD this
afternoon and yet the racing world is beside itself with expectation. Never can we have been more challenged by the disbelieving words of Paul Mellon’s father Andrew about the enthusiasms of MILL REEF’S owner – all that – “All that damned fuss about whether one horse runs faster than the other”.   But the sheer simplicity is the key to it. When those four gates slam open at 3.10 we will be less than a minute and 40 seconds away from a piece of history that will be forever written on the racing page. It is indeed just four horses running across the Sussex Downs but those 8 furlongs of effort will strain our emotions and link us from the present to the past like no unscripted drama on this earth”.

FRANKEL PAID AN ALMIGHTY COMPLIMENT TO HIS RIDER TOM QUEALLY, TO SIR HENRY CECIL AND TO ALL THE PROFESSIONAL HORSEMEN  WHO MAKE UP SIR HENRY’S TEAM AT WARREN PLACE.
FRANKEL’S  remarkable presence and intelligence shone out for all to see every inch a supreme champion. With head held high inquiringly, ears pricked he calmly took in all
before him as he stepped out on to Goodwood’s carefully manicured turf  in no hurry, he cantered quietly away to the starting gate, to put in a brilliant performance that did indeed thrill us all.
A beautiful colt at peace within himself, at peace with his rider, allowed to believe in himself confidently and in so being to carry out the task he was at Goodwood to accomplish today so easily.

These five two year olds all finished close up. All 25 two year olds will have learned more from this experience. Going stated to be good. But following heavy rain after such a long period of drought, this result may prove deceptive. Early days, it can be noted many of these have experienced quite a few challenges on the racecourse already.
