JOSH GIFFORD LAST THURSDAY
THE C4 MORNING LINE TEAM PAY THEIR TRIBUTE LIVE THIS MORNING
C4 Morning Line Host Presenter Nick Luck leaves this epitaph to his Godfather
"Josh was not only an incredible talent as a jockey and a trainer but also a man of rare humility and kindness. He had a real sense of loyalty. He was a terrific trainer and his handling of ALDANITI embodied that, but for all of his achievements he seemed more interested in others than himself. He was a pioneer in the saddle - the first flat jockey of the modern era to apply the dynamics of Flat racing to jumps. He loved life and knew how to appreciate the good times."

"RICHARD comes from a well known racing family. On leaving school he worked for
Josh Gifford in Findon where a 2 week trial stretched into 16 years. He took over as stable jockey from Bob Champion.
Ten years before he stopped riding Richard bought his present premises where he ran a livery yard for horses recovering from injury.
Having ridden just under 600 winners he retired from riding in 1991 and 6 months later began training.
Among his successes have been I'm Supposin', owned by Philippa and Nicholas Cooper, who won the Kingwell Hurdle and in the same season came 3rd to Istabraq in the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle.
The Coopers also won the prestigious Whitbread Gold Cup with Eulogy giving Richard the unusual distinction of being only 1 of 4 people to have both ridden and trained a winner of this race.
Among Richard's other major wins have been 2 EBF finals, the Dovecote Hurdle and the Sussex National with Mullintor, owned by Tommy Thompson who has been with Richard since he started training."RICHARD trains mainly National Hunt horses from his base at Ashleigh House Stables which nestles under the South Downs near Storrington in West Sussex . This relaxing and peaceful environment provides an ideal setting from which to train racehorses. Over the years the training amenities have been vastly improved and are now among the best available.
Richard retired from being a National Hunt jockey in 1991 to begin a training career which
has yielded considerable success.
He has been married to Yvonne since 1985 and they have 2 boys, Richard and Luke. Richard is a freelance apprentice jockey, has ridden a number of winners and rides out regularly for various trainers. Luke is apprenticed to a trainer in Yorkshire."
TANYA (e-mail female) STEVENSON The Punters Champion
Tanya brings us her betting bulletins, market movers and latest stats. Tanya meets up with the Clerk of the Course at Newbury Richard Osgood out on the covered un-race-able snow covered turf. Richard says he has never seen the track so badly effected by the snow and ice. Tanya introduces us to Blue Square PR and Sponsorship Manager Richard Jaques who confirms the hope to run to-days card next Friday, all being well, when everyone will be allowed in for free.

TOM KERR examines what the effect is likely to be on the sport from this summer's Games"Where the Games and our sport meet."
"The Olympics run from July 27th to August 12 2012 with the majority of events being held at the Olympic Park in East London, along with venues outside the capital, including Windsor (rowing) Weymouth and Portland (sailing).

THE TRUE LEGEND OF IRISH HORSERACING PAST AND PRESENT CHAMPIONSHIP
"While Lord Lloyd-Webber has warned that London theatres will suffer a "bloodbath" because of the Games, racing's PR men and advertisers insist the sport can turn the Olympics to its advantage.
"With up to 900,000 tourists expected to stay in London during the games, racing's leaders hope to capitalise on a home market excited by a summer of sport, with the European Football Championships in June followed by the Olympics on July 27 - August 12. Judging by the enthusiasm with which tickets for even obscure Olympics event such as handball and gymnastics were snapped up, they may have a point.
"Racing for Change's Nick Attenborough, who has been heavily involved in planning racing's response to the Olympics, is optimistic.
"On average it is thought people will stay for eight days and they certainly won't have tickets for activities on all of those days, so there is the opportunity to get them to do things in the London area." he said .
"We also believe there are ways to promote horseracing to UK customers who want leisure activities during that time but haven't been lucky enough to get Olympic tickets.
"RFC plans to raise awareness of racing through tourist boards , both within the UK and overseas, and airline and ferry magazines publications. Another promotional idea is to provide foreign language information for potential racegoers who do not speak English fluently.
"Ascot hosts three meetings during the Olympics and is particularly hopeful that the SHERGAR Cup, as an easy-to-follow team event with an international theme, will appeal to Games visitors. This year's race day is on August 11, the penultimate day of the Olympics.
"There will be fantastic atmosphere and I think it will work pretty well for us," said Nick Smith, Ascot 's head of communications . Racing has competed successfully against huge sporting events before. Scott Bowers, group director of communications at Jockey Club Racecourses, said "A great example was during the 2010 football World Cup when Carlisle staged a family day that generated a record attendance of just under 11,000 people."
EQUINE SPORT - VENUE - GREENWICH PARK Greenwich Park
