Tom O’Ryan talks to
global jockey Royston French who has been going all out to prove his dedication
to this horseracing sport worldwide. Champion apprentice in 1997 under the
tutelage of Luca Cumani in Newmarket.
“TIME flies. He’s 39
on Friday and his career has spanned nearly two decades. Many will remember
when Ffrench was thee new kid on the block. He was dashing and daring, he
crouched low in the saddle, spoke well and was a breath of fresh air. And, of
course, he was visibly, unmistakably different.
“He needs no
reminding that ‘Young gifted and black’ appeared as a favoured headline at
least once during his rapid rise to prominence under the tutelage of Luca Cumani, who helped make him champion apprentice
in 1997. It says much for racing that not once has he ever experienced any
racial discrimination within the sport.
