ARC OWNERS OF NEWCASTLE FLAT AND JUMPS TURF RACECOURSE: CONTROVERCY:

JMC: Behind “The Jolly” for racegoers at Newcastle Racecourse this afternoon lies a more sinister fact which goes a long way in explaining the confused messages and different view - points created in global horseracing around the world.

Why many trainers are so concerned about the very real possibility of Arena digging up their Newcastle turf track and throwing it away. To be replaced we are told by an all-weather surface. The trainers who are happy at present to send their horses to race on the present turf track provided by Newcastle racecourse is because of the condition of the actual turf on this track considered by trainers to be a top British turf racetrack. To trash such a track, pure folly.

WE are talking here about racehorses in training, and what facilities racehorses in training need, if they are ever to see a racecourse, or to be able to compete to win a race on any decent surface.  It is easy to break a racehorse down both mentally and physically. Through bad training and bad ground. Trainers need to be on their guard against such as this from happening. Racehorses in training are athletes, as so are their handler riders who work with them every day. Mark Johnston a trainer who’s base is in the north spoke about his concerns, and what it would mean for him this afternoon during racing, if Newcastle go ahead and trash their turf track.

“Criterion trip to suit Lincoln.”

TODAY’S RIDES

“I’ll be in action for the first time this week at Newmarket when I would love to ride a Listed winner with Bournemouth Belle in the Empress Stakes (2.50) The Canford  Cliffs filly is tough and hardy and showed a good attitude when winning her maiden under Dobbsy.

“I’m looking forward to riding last year’s winner Gatewood for John Gosden in the Fred Archer Stakes (2.15) And I’m back on Lincoln in the Criterion Stakes (3.25).

“Things did  not pan out right for him in the Hunt Cup and he is wrong at the weights with some of these, But I think 7f  is a good trip for him and I could see him running a nice race. “

RICHARD HUGHES ON SATURDAY:

"Training career to kick off sooner than I thought. But plan remains to continue riding until the end of the season, "

Pic: The gallops at Danebury where I hope to prepare my first runners to take to the racecourse in September or October - if granted my trainers license. "

Local hero Ellison plots first Plate win

“THERE’S a ‘Derby’ double for punters to enjoy today, with the,
3; 45. John Smith’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and the 6:30 150th Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby headlining a fantastic few hours of action.
“The Plate – or the Pitman’s Derby as it was known for years – is always one of the most competitive staying handicaps of the whole year, and one which locally born-and-bred trainer Brian Ellison would dearly love to win. He sends four to challenge this afternoon, with Seamour the shortest in the betting.
“Clever Cookie shoulders top weight, ground permitting. Peter Niven’s stable star is developing a real following and runs here having missed the Gold Cup due to unsuitable fast ground. Talking of Gold Cups, Ascot hero Ed Dunlop attempts to capture another big prize as he saddles Oasis Fantasy.
“The Betfred Chipchase Stakes adds further lustra to the Newcastle card, with the CH4 cameras also paying a visit to Newmarket for the 3:25 Criterion Stakes fixture.

3:25 NMKJohn Sunley Memorial Criterion Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 7f CH4

“Then it’s all eye’s on the Curragh for the Irish Derby, which sees Epsom runner-up Jack Hobbs bid to go one better. Aidan O’Brien stands in his way with Highland Reel and Oaks heroin Qualify heading a four - pronged challenge as the Ballydoyle maestro seeks a ninth win from the last 10 runnings. “
