MARK STOREY SETS THE SCENE (P2)
OPENING SHOW.
Mark Story assesses the action with one eye on bigger

“LEICESTER CITY
top of the Premier League . Donald Trump eying the White House. It has been the
season for our certainties to be shaken, in racing too.
“What odds would you have got about Collin Tizzard
having more Grade 1 winners than Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls
combined? Or rookie trainer Kerry Lee
waltzing off with a stream of big Saturday prizes?
“The question now, with ten games left in the Premier League and
the big spring jump festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree looming, is whether the
winds are changing. Crunch time is coming and from punters to trainers and
football managers, we all want to be in form, More Slaven Bilic than Arsene
Wenger.
“Today at Newbury, Doncaster and Kelso will be as much
about reading the signs as digging out winners, locating the trainers
glowing warm for Cheltenham and the
horses coming to the boil for the Crabbie’s Grand National.
“The big one at Aintree is just five weeks away and
today we have a strong cast of contenders on show, four of the top eight in the
market and the last two winners, led by the wonderful Many Clouds, compellingly
consistent even in this most unpredictable of winters and who rehearses for the
defence of his National crown in the totpoolliveinfo.com Premier Chase at
Kelso.
“Beaten only by Don Poli and Smad Place in his last
two, runs. Oliver Sherwood’s nine-year-old has tested the argument that
National winners are washed up once they win it and, fingers crossed, will be back
on Merseyside on April 9 with the best chance of any horse since Red Rum of
winning the great race more than once. “

WM: “It was great to see Rolly Baby getting off the mark over fences at Navan last Saturday. Winning a beginners’ chase at the age of eleven wasn’t unique but it was unusual. Rolly Baby was having only the eighth race of his career and only the second over fences, so it’s obvious he’s had plenty of problems over the years. But he’s always had plenty of ability and that’s why we persevered with him. Paddy Teahon – who used to have that good hurdler Mourad with us – owns him and I was delighted for him that his patience with the horse was rewarded. We’ll try to win a couple more races with him and we might mix it between fences and hurdles as we try to make up for lost time. “
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
BLOODHORSE LITERATE FORM NEWS INFO:
MOMENT OF THE WEEK WM: “It was great to see Rolly Baby getting off the mark over fences at Navan last Saturday. We’ll try to win a couple more races with him and we might mix it between fences and hurdles as we try to make up for lost time. “
JMC: Rolly Baby ended up winning a beginners’ chase at
the age of eleven. Having only the eighth race of his career, and only the
second over fences. A beginner’ chase, is a race especially for racehorses who
are starting out racing over the big chase fences. However many racehorses take
part, they are all beginners’ all learning to jump the big chase fences at
racing pace, Which means that there needs to be experienced jockeys riding to
help the racehorses to learn to race over such obstacles. It could be said such
races can turn out to be highly dangerous depending how many runners there are
taking part who may get in each others way. There appears to be no racecourse that modifies
the fences in these type of races. Or restricts the number of fences to be
jumped in a race. Possibly because
racecourse managers are usually bloodhorse illiterate.
DOWNER OF THE WEEK:
WM: “We were expecting more from Potters Point at
Leopardstown on Sunday when he started favourite for the maiden hurdle over two
and a half miles but could finish only third. For a horse who showed good form in
bumpers , his two runs over hurdles have been disappointing and we’ll probably
put him away now and bring him back next season, probably over fences.
JMC: Showing
good form in a bumper (a Flat Turf race) doesn’t guarantee a big run over
hurdles for the first few times. The jump racing season 2015 – 2016 is winding down
now, with the two big jump meetings, the Cheltenham Festival 2016 and the
Aintree Grand National 2016 to close.
WM: ““We’ll put him away now and bring him back next season”
means take him out of training now. To bring him back into training next jump season 2016 -2017.
ONE TO WATCH:
WM: ““Timi Roli, a four-year-old who won a 1m7f conditions
race on the Flat in France last summer, is a nice edition to our hurdling ranks
and is one we’re looking forward to starting off in the new season. “
JMC: Timi Roli in training to go hurdling for Team (Willie) Mullins next jump season 2016 -2017.

“VICTORIA PEMBLETON
“SHE’S CAUGHT THE BUG AND IS RAISING THE PROFILE” .
“IT WAS FANTASTIC to see Victoria Pembleton take
a giant step towards Cheltenham when partnering Pasha Du Polder to victory at
Wincanton on Wednesday.
“She looks to have struck up a good relationship with
the horse and all the hard work done on the schooling ground paid off.
“Pasha Du Polder is a really good jumper, who went
close to winning the Aintree Fox Hunters’ last year. He likes to roll along
towards the front of the field, which might not be quite so straightforward in
a race as competitive as it will be at Cheltenham compared to what happened at
Wincanton, but he’ll go there with a live chance. It is barely a year since
Victoria first sat on a horse and she has picked it all up very quickly. Nick
Scholfield has helped her out a lot at Ditcheat and tells me she has a real
knack with horses. She loves riding out and spending time with horses. Of
course, it’s our love of horses that got us all into this great game and it’s
brilliant to see Victoria has caught the bug too.
“There was a great atmosphere at Wincanton before,
during and after her race and there is no doubt whatsoever that she has raised
the profile of racing. Big headlines have greeted each of her performances and
now let’s hope there is another hugely positive story to come at Cheltenham. “
“Hectic schedule amid previews.
Clocking up the miles
“I DREAD to think how many miles I have clocked up in the
last few days, Particularly with the Cheltenham preview season now in full
swing.
“On Tuesday I rode at Leicester before dashing down to
London to take part in my first festival preview of the year. It was very interesting
to listen to Rich Ricci, while Matt Chapman was his usual self- managing to get
everyone’s blood up!
“The following morning I schooled The New One. He was
quick and neat and I couldn’t have been more happy with him.
“I rode at Wincanton that afternoon, stayed with Nick
Scholfield on Wednesday night and then went back to Wincanton on Thursday
morning when a number of Paul Nicholls Cheltenham team worked, including
Dodging Bullets, Clan Des Obeaux and Politologue.
“After that I headed off to Ludlow for two rides,
before Mum drove me to Oxford station to catch a train to London for another
festival forum. It’s all been pretty hectic,
JMC: These festival forums are all very well, so long
as it doesn’t mean that by next Tuesday when the 4 day festival at Cheltenham
starts all the jockey’s are worn out. Only Fit to drop.
Bloodhorse Illiterate Male horseracing government do more harm than good most of the time. Ignorance is bliss so they say.

DOWNER OF THE WEEK
"Mon Successeur death hard to take I was feeling
pretty down in the dumps during the drive home from Kempton last Saturday.
"Not having ridden any winners was a contributory
factor, but the overriding memory of the afternoon will be the terrible loss suffered
by the Cotton family and everyone at Ditcheat after Mon Succcesseur took a
fatal fall in the Pendil Novices’ Chase. He was a very promising horse who had
given me the most wonderful feeling when winning a decent handicap chase at
Ascot in December. We all know these things can happen in racing, but it doesn’t
make them any easier to take when they do.
