PAUSE FOR THOUGHT:
START: JULY
12, 2016: RACING POST’S GLOBAL HORSERACING DEBATE:
MARK JOHNSTON:
JMC: It is
Johnston’s Lady, Deirdre who has achieved true bloodhorse literacy in her own
right.
“Johnston’s
message for ITV: drop all betting talk.
“Leading
trainer fears Top Gear-style car crash if new broadcaster does not take fresh
approach. By David Carr.
“CLASSIC-winning
trainer Mark Johnston has highlighted the huge gulf in opinions facing ITV when
it takes over coverage of British racing next year by urging the broadcaster to
“get rid of all coverage of betting”.
“And he warned
ITV to heed the lesson of Top Gear’s troubled relaunch by making the program
“interesting” .
“When the new
Top Gear came along everybody expected it would be completely different, “
Johnston said yesterday. “I was dumfounded when I saw that it was just the same
format with a couple of tweaks and different presenters.
“It is a big
lesson for ITV I am absolutely convinced there was nothing wrong with the new
presenters on Top Gear, I used to watch it religiously and latterly got bored
with it, it had become stale. “
“ITV takes
over the contract to show racing from January 1, with Ed Chamberlin already
announced as the main presenter.
And Johnston warned: “I would say to them, “make it interesting”.
“Top gear appealed to the whole family and they should be aiming to produce a programme that has appeal for all.
“They should
get rid of all the coverage of betting. I totally understand the relationship
between racing and betting, but the coverage is ridiculous and its bad for both
industries.
“You can watch
hours of football coverage on television and never hear betting mentioned once,
but millions of people do bet on football because they have an opinion on.
Racing’s viewers are encouraged to listen to other people’s opinion’s, tips
basically. “
“With ITV’s
team still to be announced, Johnston voiced support for Derek Thompson, who
lost his position with Channel 4 in 2012.
“Everybody has
been saying Matt Chapman is going to get it and I can fully understand that, “
he said. “He’s very entertaining.
“But I have
always said that Tommo gets a huge amount of stick but is one of the most
professional interviewers out there.
“As an
interviewee, I would still rate him number one, he gets the best out of his
subject. No matter who you give him, he takes an interest in the subject. And
gets the bet out of them. He has always been greatly underestimated and they
are worse without him. “

RACING POST’S GLOBAL HORSERACING DEBATE:
STEP 2: JULY 20, 2016:
FRANCESCA CUMANI:
“New ITV
presenter Cumani says betting coverage is vital.
Racing Post Wednesday July 20 By Stuart Riley.”
“FRANCESCA
CUMANI, revealed yesterday as the new face of Flat racing for the next four
years, believes betting must form part of ITV’s coverage of the sport but that
a balance needs to be found to cater for viewers’ different interests.
“Cumani,
daughter of Derby winning trainer Luca and who turned 33 last week, will
co-host the new terrestrial broadcaster’s coverage of Flat racing with main
presenter Ed Chamberlin.
“Speaking to
the Racing Post, she said: I haven’t had any in-depth discussions with ITV about how the program will work but from my
personal perspective I think you do have to cover betting. It’s an integral part of the sport and even
if you are not having a bet – as I -don’t – it can be interesting in
highlighting the activity around a race; seeing which horses are moving up or
down in the market does provide insight.
“However, I
think there are certain ways to do that and I would like to help people love
the sport as I do. “
“Cumani, who’s
comments on betting’s place in television coverage are in the wake of the
debate sparked last week by top trainer Mark Johnston – who believes when ITV
takes over from CH4 on January 1m 2017, they should “get rid of all coverage of
betting”-will present 50 days of racing a year.
“Cumani said:
“This is very much my dream job. I’m just thrilled to be given the opportunity.
“I grew up
watching racing and it’s a huge honour to get the chance to co-host the
coverage.
“It’s what I
have been working towards my entire career. I can’t wait to engage with a whole
new audience and convey my love for the sport. “
“Cumani is
excited by the direction she says ITV is looking to take its coverage, and
said: “From the conversations I’ve had with ITV so far there is huge interest
on their part to make the coverage new, interesting and exciting – to try to reach beyond the traditional audience.
“It’s a brave
decision and I’m so excited to be part of it. “
“Cumani has
ridden as an amateur jockey, hosted the Winning Post program on CNN in the US
and is the lead analyst on the SEVEN Network’s award – winning broadcast
coverage of the Melbourne Cup carnival – and during the northern hemisphere
winter she will continue to work in Australia.
“Covering Flat
racing here is the way it was suggested to me by ITV, and I was very happy with
that as it allows me to carry on working in Australia as well – I feel very
fortunate.
“On the
difference between television coverage of the sport in the two nations, she
said: “In Australia the coverage is perhaps more lively and fast-paced, but
it’s always a balancing act trying to keep everyone happy.
“You need to
look after hardcore fans interested primarily in the horses but also cater for
those with perhaps more of a passing interest – with celebrities, fashion and
food – as well as trying to lure new people in. That’s something hopefully
we’ve been doing pretty well in Australia.”
“Cumani has
never met her new colleague Chamberlin, formerly of Sky Sports football fame-
but has heard “nothing but good things; I’m told he is a lovely man” – while
she added that her father, who is delighted with her appointment, has a
reputation she hopes her close connection can help with.
“She said with
her tongue in cheek: “A lot of people tell me how difficult he is, so hopefully
he’ll be more generous with me. And hopefully I’ll be speaking to him after
lots of big wins.
“ITV’s
director of sport Niall Sloane said: “Francesca has a superb pedigree as a
racing presenter with a genuine love of the sport..
“Alongside Ed
Chamberlin, we believe she will engage our audience in some wonderful events
throughout the Flat season and we look forward to working with her. “
