“DONNACHA O’BRIEN will be the only new recipient when the
awards for the Flat champions are presented at the final meeting for the Irish season
at Leopardstown today.
“O’Brien, 18, will be crowned champion apprentice for the
first time. Not only that, but he enjoyed his first Group 1 success when riding
Intricately, trained by his brother Joseph, to victory in the Moyglare Stud
Stakes at the Curragh last month. He will ride the same filly in the Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita next weekend.
“Pat Smullen will be champion jockey for the ninth time
having his best season in terms of winners, while Aidan O’Brien is again champion
trainer. He has topped the list every year since 1998.
“The owners’ championship was a closer run affair with Sue
Magnier again topping the list ahead of the Aga Khan. The owners’ title is
decided on overall prize-money based on the owner’s percentage share in the
ownership of ach horse.
“The championships are based on all races run in Ireland from
the first Curragh meeting of the year to today’s fixture. The all-weather
fixtures run at Dundalk during that period are included but not the winter
meetings held there early in the year.”

JMC: A flight animal, translated means any
and all equine behaviour is to run away from situation environments that the horse perceives to be unusually dangerous, frightening, a threat to their own life’s existence is
to run away from it ASAP. This was observed with Frankel and Tom Queally in his
early days. From the riders point of view it is probably best to sit and suffer, to let a horse stride along, instead of getting in a fight to hold him-her back.
JMC: Once a racehorse stamps her-his
authority on her- his rider, taking charge using her-his bodyweight, that’s it,
game over, favourite or not . Frankel took a grip like that in the early days
of his career. But that didn’t stop him winning. He was quick out of the
starting gate, setting the pace throughout each race, to win. Frankel didn’t
hang about, his mindset told him that his own safety depended on running away
from the start. Frankel learned to settle later, as experience and care settled him down, he was fine.
