RP:SR:JMC: Haqeeqy victory was very poignant says

Gosden as dominant duo clean up. By Stuart Riley.

“FOR John and Thady Gosden’s Clarehaven Stables in Newmarket

it was an incredible day of global domination with a pair of

Group 1 wins netting close to £4 million in Dubai. “It was two

domestic successes, however, for the family of Hamdan Al Maktoum,

in the week of the deputy ruler of Dubai’s death which meant most.

JG:“To win the Lincoln in the colours of Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al

Maktoum, who is the daughter of Sheikh Hamdan, is very poignant

said Gosden snr.

“I was at Kempton and Sheikh Hamdan’s horses (Al Zaraqaan and

Almighwar) were first and second in the Rosebery. To me that was

extremely significant because he was an extraordinary man who did

great things for his country and was a great supporter of British

 racing.  We’ll miss him dreadfully.”

Their Lincoln winner was Haqeeqy, partnered by Benoit de la Sayette

who was having his first ride on turf, and Gosden added; “It’s great

for Benoit and all the team at Clarehaven who have helped him over

the last two and a half years. And his mother and father, who have

been incredibly important taking him pony racing as a kid in France

and England. “He’s a talented young rider; he’s made a huge amount

of progress since he’s been with us. He’s still terribly young, so we

will try and manage things sensibly, but he’s got a head on his

shoulders and he rode a peach of a race. I did tell him the horse

came out of a breeze-up and can be very keen, so you’ve got to

cover him up no matter what, and if you get into trouble and

you don’t get through, that’s my fault because that’s what I told

you to do. “And if you get there too late that’s my fault because

I’ve told you what I think is the right thing to do. He rode the

              horse superbly.”

“On their Group 1 double, in the Dubai Turf with Lord North and

Sheema Classic with Mishriff, Gosden said “Dubai was a dream

come true. We’ve all been working on it. Lord North flew over last

year and then it was called off when we all went into lockdown.

“He made the trip down and this time he got to run and he showed

his class. I’m thrilled for the horse and all connections."

“The other horse [Mishriff] is a more difficult one because we

were taking on a mile and a half and that’s very different to

mixing it with the Americans over a mile and an eighth on dirt.

“He can be a lovely, relaxed horse and David [Egan, jockey] and I

discussed it at length and felt the best thing from that draw

was to take him back, drop him across, and I said if your last

your last. You have a long straight and if they go slow and you

never get there it doesn’t matter because that’s the way to

ride him a mile and a half on the turf.

“I thought he gave him the most gorgeous ride; the horse

answered every call. Those Japanese mares, their some

racemares those two, he headed them and then they came

back at him. It was a phenomena race. Full marks to the

horse, to be able to do that under two very different codes.”

“On his son Thady, who has made a tremendous start to

his time as a licensed trainer, he added; “Thady’s been an

integral part of things here since he was a kid, his school

days and university vacations.

“He’s been with us solidly for five years now and is a

huge asset. We’ve a great team and we all work very closely.

Our office is small, so we are all discussing everything

together at the same time. to that extent it’s a close-knit

 team.”

7-11

John and Thady Gosden have struck with seven of their

       11 runners (63%) since officially becoming joint-trainers

 at Clarehaven Stables on Friday.
