RP: Cauthen pays tribute to his
close friend Mercer.

RP: JB: Steve
Cauthen yesterday paid a fond farewell to the
late Joe Mercer. From the other side of the Atlantic when he
hailed the legendry rider for helping him settle in and
acclimatise
not only to the sport in Britain, but everyday
life.
"A much –
loved figure, Mercer was champion jockey in 1979
and rode the
mighty Brigadier Gerard in all hes races. He
won eight
British Classics during a career that spanned.
36 years and 2,810 victories.
Mercer died
at the age of 86 on Monday and Cauthen, a riding
sensation in
the States who moved to Britain in the 1970’s,
was keen to
pay tribute.
SC: “Joe was
there the first day I rode at Salisbury.” He said,
“I was a new
kid coming from a different country and didn’t
know how
anybody would accept me, but particularly Joe and
Brian Taylor, who were two old pipe smoking
buddies,
Immediately came
up to me and were very friendly. They made
me feel welcome and were glad I was there.
“It was a big
deal and later on when I was working for
Barry Hills,
when I went to Newmarket I’d stay up there
with Joe, who had a flat. He was very
welcoming and just
a fun guy.”
JB: “Cauthen,
who was a champion jockey three times
and won the
Derby on Slip Anchor (1985) and Reference
Point (1987)
among other major big race successes, added
“Joe couldn’t
have ever been more helpful or nice to a new,
young guy coming
in , even though I was riding against
him. He was of the all time good guys, and a
great rider.
“He new his
stuff, looked great on a horse and was a strong
Rider. You’d watch him and see where he’d go
in a race and
follow, try
to learn from him. He was really rhythmical on a
horse. When
he was riding in a finish he wouldn’t get in a
horses way,
which is a skill in itsself, getting the horse
running and let him do his thing. Joe wouldn’t
try to overdo
it and looked pretty on a horse. Horses ran
for him. And
horses run
for horse people, who aren’t getting in their
way! He knew
what he was doing.” Mercer won Classics
for the Queen
on Highclere who landed the 1,000 Guineas
and Prix de Diane in 1974 and will for ever be
remembered
for his
association with 2,000 Guineas and King George V1
and Queen
Elizabeth Stakes hero Brigadier Gerard, the most
talented
and decorated horse he rode. He was revered as much
for his ability in the
saddle as his warmth out of it and
Cauthen said: “We were close friends and letting me stay at
his flat in Newmarket showed the kind of guy he was.
“It saved me
driving back to Lambourn and I could have got
a room, but
he was like, ‘No,’ stay with me.’
“He was very
friendly and welcomed me not only into
the racing
community, but the country. He’d tell me things
I should do, while his wife Anne was a lovely
lady as well.”
