THE RACING POST SUNDAY MAY 1st 2011
SATURDAY APRIL 30th the 2,000 GUINEAS (Colts)

“BEYOND BELIEF FRANKEL produces one of the most incredible moments in racing history as he routs his Classic rivals.”

“That was the amazing Guineas winner I’ve ever seen …” Pat Eddery

JON LEES REPORTS ”FRANKEL’S CLASSIC ROMP. CECIL’S 25 CLASSIC WINS .
OUT OF THIS WORLD. Racing hails a new king as Cecil colt crushes rivals.

RESULT. QIPCO 2,000 GUINEAS WINNER £198,695 1mRow. Good to firm.
WIN FRANKEL 3 9-0 partner TOM QUEALLY handler presenter SANDEEP GAURAVARAM trainer Henry Cecil for Khalid Abdulla breeder Juddmonte Farms. 1-2f Distance 6 lengths.

JON LEES REPORTS “After the Royal Wedding came a coronation at Newmarket yesterday when FRANKEL demonstrated he could be racing’s new king with a performance as breathtaking as any occasion at Westminster Abbey.

Henry says … “To win the 2,000 Guineas was a tremendous thrill to me but it was a team effort. I want to thank all the staff at Warren Place who were involved, especially Dan de Haan and Shane Fetherstonhaugh , who has ridden him in all his work. Thank you I owe you a lot.”

ALASTAIR DOWN writes “Immortality assured after display of raw power and glory”. Never before have I seen a top- class mile race over within 2 furlongs.” Accompanied by a great cameo portrait captured by EDWARD WHITAKER of FRANKEL and TOM QUEALLY after the pair had set alight the Flat season in stunning fashion at Newmarket yesterday.”

PAUL CURTIS, “ RACING POST RATINGS VIEW. Best Guineas winner in RPR history. ‘FRANKEL’S astonishing performance yesterday (30.04.2011) puts him firmly in the superstar status, with an initial Racing Post Rating of 133 ranking him the best 2,000 Guineas winner in RPR history, surpassing the 131 high set by KING’S BEST in 2000.
“That’s an extraordinary high figure for the time of year, but this was an extraordinary performance with an unconventional result and the sort of beaten distances that usually have no place in races like the Guineas. “

FRANKEL’S power comes from his extravagant action at cruising speed, and QUEALLY’S confidence in trusting this colt to use such talent.

RACING POST AT THE HEART OF THE BETTING SHOP
FREE INSIDE 50 YEARS OF BETTING SHOPS ANNIVERSARY PULL OUT

“A fantastic 24-page memento celebrating a half-century of betting shops- a must-read for anybody who’s ever set foot inside one.”

HOW EVERYTHING CHANGED FOREVER
“JOHN (Mac) McCRIRICK THE PUNTERS CHAMPION. “On a missed opportunity and legislation that would bring about social change on a scale never imagined.

“WHO KNEW? I did. On May 1 1961, slipping away from my job in the control office at London’s Dorchester Hotel, the only place to be in town was the new, first floor Jack Swift betting shop, up rickety stairs, on Dover Street. Everyone wanted to see what it was like.

“It was all incredibly exciting, yet it was to prove just as frustrating for me. I knew at once betting shops were the future. They had to become the social club for us hoi polloi – toffs enjoyed the likes of Boodles, Whites, or The Turf Club. Now we ordinary folk had an environment that would definitely prove hugely successful.

“Anyone getting in at the start had a priceless lifetime opportunity, yet I knew I did not have the business brain or commercial ability to profit from it. Even if you were to transport me back these 50 years, it would be exactly the same……”
