CARRUTHERS GALLOPS TO POPULAR
 HENNESSY WIN.
By Paul Eacott 3:21pm 26 NOV 2011 Report: Newbury, Saturday

3.10 Hennessy Gold Cup Chase (Grade 3) 3m2½f, 4yo+
“CARRUTHERS put up a gallant front-running performance to post a popular win in one of the jumps season's biggest races.
“The eight-year-old had been running consistently well without getting his head in front since he last won at this track two years ago, but lining up off a 10lb lower mark than when sixth in this corresponding race last year, he had enough left in reserve to repel the challengers when they came gunning at him in the closing stages.

Crossing the line Carruthers, sent off a 10-1 chance, was three and three-quarter lengths clear of Planet Of Sound with a further three-quarters of a length back to his Philip Hobbs-trained stablemate Fair Along. Great Endeavour, winner of the Paddy Power Gold Cup, finished fourth over this longer trip.

“There were emotional scenes after the race with winning jockey Mattie Batchelor in tears having ridden the biggest winner of his career on the second anniversary of his mother's death.
“Batchelor was quick to praise the ability of the winner after the race, saying: "I was getting to the fences too quick and he was getting me out of trouble. He made me look good."

“With a number of the field battling to get to the front early on, Carruthers had to wait longer than is often the case to take up his front-running role.

“Mattie Batchelor celebrates after Hennessy glory on Carruthers

“Once there though, he proved impossible to pass as the challengers came at him in turn heading down the home straight and he saw them off one by one.
"He is a little lion," said Batchelor. "Coming to the second last I thought I have got to wing this to win and he didn't let me down."

Batchelor, who has ridden Carruthers in all bar two of his 21 starts, continued: "He is a brilliant old horse. Last year was wrong but this year he has come back better. He is in the form of his life. I love him and it is great!"

“Carruthers was bred by Lord Oaksey, who rode Taxidermist to win the race in 1958, and while he was not present at the track, his son-in-law trainer Mark Bradstock was delighted that the son of Kayf Tara had finally bagged a big race.

“Bradstock said: "I always thought he had a big one in him and it is brilliant that it has come to fruition.

"I was nervous this morning. This is one of the top six races that you want to win and he has done it well so I am delighted."

“Planet Of Sound had been backed on the eve of the race to give Hobbs a second win in the race he won in 2001 with What's Up Boys and, despite the fact he found one too good, the trainer was delighted with the effort of both him and Fair Along.

"Planet Of Sound ran great." Hobbs said. "I've just spoken with Richard [Johnson] and the owners and the Grand National might be the job for him. He stays and that could be realistic.

"Old Fair Along ran a fantastic race so we'll stick with long-distance chases for him."
“This was the furthest that Great Endeavour had raced over as he attempted to become just the third horse to complete the Paddy Power Gold Cup-Hennessy double and his rider Timmy Murphy said: "He didn't get home in the last two furlongs but he has run a cracker."

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

This week’s Racing Post Series
TONY MORRIS’S ‘ Giants of the Turf’

SEA THE STARS
MODERN GREAT WAS THE BEST TO EVER COME OUT OF IRELAND.”

“ IT WAS not so surprising that in the first 75 years of the Derby it was won by three sets of brothers and three half-siblings. The population of the breed was small and the sport was dominated by the products of aristocratic owner-breeders who tended to have the best broodmare bands…..”

NEWMARKET TATTERSALLS’ DECEMBER SALES kicked off last Monday. The Racing Post’s (22.11.11) Edward Prosser  BLOODSTOCK WORLD records in MARKET WATCH “Surprise of strength. With a foal catalogue featuring SEA THE STARS’ first crop and a selection of mares including the dam of MAYBE, yesterday’s opening yearling session is unlikely to prove the highlight of Tattersalls’ 2011 December Sale.

SEA THE STARS filly tops third session of Tattersalls December foal sale

Posted: Friday, November 25, 2011 6:56 PM

“Weanlings by 2009 European Horse of the Year SEA THE STARS have brought five of the top eight prices thus far at the four-day Tattersalls December foal sale, including Friday’s session topper, a filly bought by Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold for $733,559 (450,000 guineas).

“.Strong trade continued at Park Paddocks in Newmarket with Tattersalls reporting sales on 176 of 217 horses offered at Friday’s third session. Total receipts rose 51% from last year’s corresponding session to $19,678,114 (12,071,500 guineas). Average price was up 15% to $111,807 (68,588 guineas) and median increased 18.8% to $77,431 (47,500 guineas).

“The clearance rate was a healthy 81.2%, compared with 74.9% at the same session in 2010.

“Gold acquired the session-topping SEA THE STARS filly from the consignment of Norelands Stud, Ireland. The bay filly was produced by the unraced Rahy mare Ecoutila, dam of French Group 3 winner Surfrider and multiple stakes winner Enticement (GB), who was Group 3-placed at York. The youngster is from the family of French classic winner and sire Green Tune and European champion Pas de Reponse

"Hopefully, she'll be very nice," said Gold, racing manager for Sheikh Hamdam bin Rashid al Maktoum’s worldwide racing operation. "I thought she was a lovely filly and I have been very impressed by the foals I have seen by the stallion. We have some lovely homebreds by him, they’re  outstanding and, having seen his foals, I think he is fantastically exciting stallion. It is the best bunch of first-crop foals I have seen in terms of quality.

"This filly has the most amazing temperament; all of them by the sire appear to be the same.

"She is out of a Rahy mare, a great broodmare sire, and she has bred two stakes winners already. It was a no-brainer really for a racing operation such as Shadwell to buy this filly."A colt by SEA THE STARS'  half brother Galileo (Ire), regarded as one of the world’s top stallions, attracted the day’s second-highest price of $611,298 (375,000 guineas) from Coolmore’s Demi O’Byrne."

GREAT INTEREST SHOWN IN SEA THE STARS FIRST CROP OF FOALS.

Foals by SEA THE STARS such as this one, are in demand at Tattersalls

Tsui snaps up two Stars for half a million

"ALL eyes on Tattersalls on Friday will be on the first-crop of foals catalogued by the outstanding Group 1 winner SEA THE STARS. Nine are set to go under the hammer from about midday onwards and if the results from Goffs are anything to go by - where four from his first crop averaged €572,000 - today's session will provide more than its share of excitements.

Please use this link for this weeks' horseracing news
http://turfcall2-racingpost.blogspot.com/2011/11/morning-line-saturday-november-19th.html

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT
“RODNEY MASTERS welcomes the reappearance of LONG RUN in a race to savour.
“The young king returns with jumping world at his feet ….
“BEFORE we had a chance to clear our throats to voice a view, one talking point theorising about Cheltenham Gold Cup winner LONG RUN’S level of match fitness for his return in today’s £200,000 Betfair Chase was emphatically thrown back in our faces by a posse of his stablemates.
“Of Nicky Henderson’s five winners spread across Ascot and Haydock yesterday, four were making their first appearance of the season. Up until recently, Henderson’s horses had been needing their initial run. Then, little more than three weeks ago, rain arrived in sufficient quantity across west Berkshire for his team to work for the first time this winter on his privately owned superb grass gallops alongside the Faringdon Road. That was instrumental in honing race fitness.
“Three of LONG RUN’S rivals in today’s showcase race have had the benefit of a lung-opener, with WEIRD AL and TIME FOR RUPERT  finishing first and second  in the Charlie Hall Chase last month, with PURE FAITH  - who can be backed at 100-1 – was second to ALBERTAS RUN  at Aintree four weeks ago.
“Perhaps oddly, however, the two horses who follow LONG RUN in the market are also without a race run – DIAMOND HARRY who missed Wetherby due to lameness and so has not run since winning the Hennessy last year, and the living legend that is KAUTO STAR ….

TWO YOUNG RIDERS INTRODUCED TODAY ON THE MORNING LINE

Charles Deutsch http://www.pra.gb.com/PRALeadingRider.aspx

And

Hector Crouch  http://branches.pcuk.org/lordleconfield/news-archive/

THE PROBLEM  the young ones have to face today is with the bloodhorse illiteracy  found within the draconian  British Horseracing Authority Regulation, Disciplinary and Licensing . (BHA) AND THE GOVERNMENT

1.       There is no true foundation career structure whatsoever
2.      There is no true wage structure whatsoever according to skills achieved along the way toward achieving bloodhorse literacy.
3.      There are no career steps available in honing skills as a handler rider

4.      Worst of all once a person has achieved the first step up toward achieving bloodhorse literacy the bloodhorse illiterate BHA starts to treat you as a criminal.
