“RACEGOERS at Aintree today will be treated to the sights of a host of Grand National legends when 11 famous jockeys of yesteryear get the leg up to contest the John Smith’s Aintree Legends Charity race.

“The 1m5f  Flat race , due off at 1pm, is being run in aid of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and comes 30 years after Champion and Aldaniti recorded their remarkable against- the- odds Nationial victory.


“Champion, wearing the white and blue silks of Aldaniti, will lead the parade of runners on to the course alongside last year’s Grand National winning trainer Jonjo O’Neill.


“Among the names riding today are National-winning jockey’s Graham Thorner, Ben de Haan, Hywel Davies, Brendan Powell, Marcus Armytage, Carl Llewellyn and Tony Dobbin.


“Ten-time Irish champion jockey Charlie Swan favourite PLENTY POCKET, is also in action as is eight times British champion Peter Scudamore.



“Champion whose charity has raised more than £12 million since being started in 1983, said ‘ The 1981 Grand National was a remarkable day, not just for me but for those around the world who gained hope from my victory in their battles against cancer.”

TOBY BALDING 74 suffered a stroke that has impaired his sight, he was admitted to the Royal Hampshire Hospital in Winchester last Monday (4th April)


JONATHAN GEAKE, Toby’s son in law who took over the training in 2004, said “Toby has had a stroke. He lunched with us on Sunday, but was not really himself and was taken into hospital on Monday. Things change on a daily basis, he is semi- blind and not great on his feet, but his actual limbs and speech are fine and he has already started therapy. He is not in great shape, but the doctors say he will improve.”


GRAHAM GREEN reporting for the Racing Post last Thursday (April 7) “Confirmed that Toby had planned to attend all three days at Aintree one of his favourite meetings. It is unclear whether Balding will be able to attend a ceremony at Buckingham Palace next month at which he is due to receive the OBE he was awarded in the New Year’s Honours List.

“An honorary member of the Jockey Club, Balding has also played a significant role in racing politics on behalf of the National Trainers’ Federation, which he helped to found, and during a three-year-term as non- executive director of the BHA.


“The family is limiting hospital visits so as not to put Balding under too much strain, but get-well messages would be appreciated and Geake said; “We are reading the cards to him.”


TOBY BALDING a generous horseman  of the highest calibre, training more than 2,000 winners in his career. Winning the Grand National at Aintree with  HIGHLAND WEDDING in 1969,  and with  LITTLE POLVEIR in 1989. Two Champion Hurdles with BEECH ROAD in 1989, and with  MORLEY STREET in 1991. The Cheltenham Gold Cup with  COOL GROUND in 1992.


Toby did not just teach young people about horses and horseracing, he also educated them about life and for this reason so many of his pupils have gone on to have the kind of influence that has brought the world of horseracing forward.


 The British  bloodhorse illiterate regulation and disciplinary personnel now under the banner of the British Horseracing Authority will always be in debt to his knowledge,  and wisdom over the rights and needs of all horses bred for racing. Foals, yearlings, two year olds and up, to include all the young ones who have just left school and are hoping to make a career in horseracing needing the right kind of learning environment  to move on with confidence and caring for the wellbeing of all the horses.

BOB CHAMPION ANNOUNCES THAT AINTREES  LEGENDS CHARITY RACE, SUPPORTED BY JOHN SMITHS, WILL BE RUN ON JOHN SMITHS GRAND NATIONAL DAY SATURDAY 9 APRIL 2011. 

In 1981, in the year that Charles married Diana, Shergar won the Derby and Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest, Bob Champion (recovering from testicular cancer) and Aldaniti (recovering from a serious leg injury) created a real life fairy story by winning the Grand National.

30 years later – and a few weeks before William marries Kate – Bob Champion will ride on that hallowed Aintree turf once again, on John Smith’s Grand National Day 2011, in a special Bob Champion Aintree Legends Charity race, supported by John Smith’s.

The race will be run on the flat as the first race on the John Smith’s Grand National card on Saturday, April 9.

Bob will be joined by a number of retired Grand National winning jockeys as well as some other legends of the weighing room. The line-up already includes the likes of Graham Thorner (1972, Well To Do), Ben De Haan (1983, Corbiere), Hywel Davies (1985, Last Suspect, Brendan Powell (1988, Rhyme ‘N’ Reason), Jimmy Frost (1989, Little Polveir), Marcus Armytage (1990, Mr Frisk), Carl Llewellyn (1992, Party Politics & 1998, Earth Summit), Tony Dobbin (1997, Lord Gyllene), Jim Cullotty (2002, Bindaree) and Peter Scudamore (eight-time champion jockey although he never won the National) and Charlie Swan (10-time Irish champion jockey).

The race will be run in aid of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, which was founded in 1983 and which has so far raised £12 million – that’s approximately £400,000 for every fence of the National that Bob and Aldaniti jumped!

Bob Champion said: “The 1981 Grand National was a remarkable day, not just for me, but all of those around the world who gained hope from my victory in their personal battles against cancer. 30 years on and with the money this race raises, I want to continue to reduce the odds against cancer. “Doncaster clerk vows to restore racing surface writes Jon Lees

“Doncaster clerk of the course Jon Pullin yesterday pledged to do all he could to restore the racing surface to its former standard as he accepted it looked ‘as bad as it has for a number of years’ during the William Hill Lincoln meeting.

“Lincoln favourite TAQUEED was withdrawn on Saturday because trainer John Gosden said the track was bare and contained a lot of sand, while Ryan Moore described it as ‘the worst I’ve ever seen here.’

“Pullin himself wasn’t happy with the state of the track but blamed a challenging winter, when snow and a long period of freezing temperatures killed much of the grass. The weather since hadn’t produced conditions in which it could recover satisfactorily.

‘I was up front in expressing my concern about the grass cover and yesterday was the first chance people really had to see it. The issues have been weather-related. We had the first frosts a fortnight after the November Handicap. That was followed by snow, which covered the track for three weeks.

“ We had temperatures in December consistently below zero, 21 days when it got to as low as -15C, and it killed the grass. When I arrived at the end of January we had a track with a lot of dead grass on it.

“We’ve done everything we can to try to stimulate growth but we’ve not had the weather on our side. Even in March we had just 5mm of rain, three of which fell in the last week. We watered to promote grass growth ten days before the Lincoln and finished on Monday.

"Friday was the first day the soil temperature had been consistent day and night to promote growth. We had frost on Monday and Tuesday. I spoke to Ryan before and after he’d ridden and accepted his comments. It doesn’t look good and it’s probably as bad as it’s looked for a number of years. Ryan did say after he had ridden in the first that it rode better than it looked.

"We’ll start work first thing tomorrow morning to get back to the great reputation that Doncaster has. “

“TWICE Grand National winning jockey CARL  LLEWELLYN  believes that a change in riding styles could be responsible for the dramatic increase in the number of jockey’s being unseated in the Grand National.
“Llewellyn was speaking in the light of research carried out by the Racing Post’s James Pyman that showed that while the percentage of fallers in the race dropped from 48 per cent in the 1980’s to 46 per cent in the 2000s, the number of unseated riders had increased from seven per cent in the 1980’s to 18 per cent two decades later.

“Llewellyn, who won the race on PARTY POLITICS in 1992 and EARTH SUMMIT six years later, said: ‘Generally, people are riding a lot shorter than they used to. If you look back at the videos of just 10 years ago, they were riding considerably longer.

“The style back then was to have your foot in the iron, but it has moved towards having your toe in the iron, so obviously it can come out easier if your heel is not down.
“Eight- times champion jockey Peter Scudamore said he was fascinated by Pyman’s findings and agreed that both a change riding styles combined with riders approaching the fences quicker since modifications were made could be responsible for the unseating increase.
“As a professional, sometimes I don’t like journalists coming up with statistics about something they don’t know about, but I thought it was a very good article and I learned something from it, Scudamore said

“While, I don’t think the number of unseated riders is totally due to riding shorter, I definitely agree that it is down to the speed of the race now.
“But sometimes it doesn’t matter what speed you are riding at or how long you are riding (leathers) - if your horse drops its back legs you are gone.”

Balance, it is all to do with balance. There are all sorts of things that may happen during a race, especially a race such as the Grand National that may throw the horse, or the rider or both off balance.

Have you heard the story of Charlie Day, who died disputing his right of way ... He was right quite right as he rode along but he is just as dead as if he had been dead wrong ....

The law of averages show that a rider has a better chance of staying with his horse throughout a race such as the Grand National if he rides with his leathers a few holes longer.  Then if  he hits the snags he is more likely to be able to stay with his horse.
