THE HENNESSY GOLD CUP MEETING AT NEWBURY 25th 26th and 27th November 2010
http://www.newbury-racecourse.co.uk/About-Newbury/Racecourse-History

We have Kingsclere trainer John Porter to thank when we come racing at Newbury on Hennessy Gold Cup day. Plus thanks also, to King Edward vii who helped Porter achieve his dream to build a racecourse at Newbury.

John Porter was born in Rugeley Staffordshire on March 2nd 1838. Leaving school in 1852 he had a holiday, before any definite arrangements were made toward career choice.

This holiday drifted on for 12 months. Resulting in a career choice in horseracing. Several stepping stones followed on along the way until destiny brought Porter to Park House Kingsclere. ( Home base for licensed trainer Andrew Balding now.)

Porter a highly successful Kingsclere trainer formed The Newbury Racecourse Company and purchased the land for the new track in April 1904 at a cost of £57,240 and the construction began.

On September 26th and 27th 1905 the first race meeting took place at Newbury Racecourse. With all the many wonderful race days since, through to the present day. John Porter achieved ‘Bloodhorse Literacy’ something that money cannot buy.

Throughout a horseracing lifetime, Porter’s work, shines out still for all of us to enjoy, especially on Hennessy Gold Cup Day (27.11,2010) A special Christmas treat for all who wish, to enjoy at Christmas time.

PEOPLE SKILLS IN THEORY AND IN PRACTICE NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT BY ANY GOVERNMENTS, OR BY ANY BRITISH HORSERACING AUTHORITY REGULATORS. WHY?

The British Government, the British Horseracing Authority, and the World Banks all totally out of touch with the lives of all those who go out each and every day to work.

All those people that this government is forcing into poverty and forcing into homelessness. It was not so long ago that government were doing everything in their power to encourage people to purchase their own homes.

All those people whose hard earned cash was used to bale out the Banks. But why should these people bale out any bank? What has any bank actually ever done for them, other than ‘Rip them Off’?

David Cameron, Paul Roy and Bankers have never experienced homelessness or poverty. Yet we hear these people speaking daily through the media, dictating to others on how they should manage through loosing their jobs, their homes, and their whole livelihoods ...... What sort of a person is David Cameron? What sort of a person is Paul Roy? What sort of a people are these Bankers?

FRANKEL ZOOMS INTO CONTENTION FOR A CARTIER RACING AWARD

FRANKEL bolstered his towering reputation and stormed into the reckoning for the coveted Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award at Newmarket on Saturday, October 16, with a commanding victory over five select rivals in the Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes.

The seven-furlong contest was billed as the two-year-old race of the century with fellow unbeaten juveniles Dream Ahead and Saamidd in opposition.

Dual Group One hero Dream Ahead lined in an attempt to complete the Group One Shadwell Middle Park/Dubai Dewhurst double for the first time since Diesis achieved the exceptional feat in 1982. Godolphin’s Saamidd, nicknamed “Pegasus” in trainer Saeed bin Suroor’s yard, was also out to protect a perfect record following his impressive triumph in the Group Two Neptune Investment Management Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in September.

Among the perceived bit part players on an afternoon entrenched in optimistic hyperbole, Glor Na Mara was bidding to give trainer Jim Bolger a fourth victory in five years, while the lightly-raced Roderic O’Connor represented the previous season’s winning trainer Aidan O’Brien. Brian Meehan saddled the Group Three winner Waiter’s Dream.

Such races exemplify what the Cartier Racing Awards represent. Frankel delivered a performance par excellence as he enhanced the impression of his 10-length rout of good horses in the Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes the previous month with a comfortable two and a quarter length triumph over Roderic O’Connor. Dream Ahead and Saamidd failed to live up to their billing in fifth and sixth respectively.

Dream Ahead remains top of the current points standings for the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award with 64 points, ahead of dual Group Two winner Approve, who was no match for Saamidd at Doncaster. Frankel’s 48 points place him level with unbeaten Group One Vincent O’Brien National Stakes winner Patchwork and Group One Keene land Phoenix Stakes hero Zoffany.

The Cartier Racing Awards recognise excellence in horseracing and the awards are the sport’s equivalent of the Oscars. Split into eight categories for the year’s top horses, including the particularly coveted Cartier Horse Of The Year, the awards are determined by points earned in Pattern races combined, at the end of the season, with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists, as well as votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.

European horseracing’s most prestigious accolades will be presented for the 20th time on November 16, during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience in the ballroom of London’s Dorchester Hotel.

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to recognise the achievements of racehorses in Europe. The awards also include the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award Of Merit for the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 18-strong Cartier Jury, has/have done most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

Frankel’s victory was the first leg of a Group One double on Champions’ Day at Newmarket for owner Khalid Abdulla, trainer Henry Cecil and jockey Tom Queally. The trio teamed up for more success in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes as Twice Over raced to a roundly applauded victory in the 10-furlong contest for the second year in succession.

Having also finished runner-up in 2008 to that year’s outstanding Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award winner New Approach, the five-year-old once again displayed his abundant class as he quickened away from multiple Group One winner Vision d’Etat to take his Cartier points tally to 140.

Twice Over, also successful in this season’s Group One Coral-Eclipse Stakes, now sits second to the great mare Goldikova (144 points) in both the Cartier Older Horse category and Cartier Horse Of The Year standings, sharing second spot in the latter with crack miler Canford Cliffs (140).

The Richard Hannon-trained Canford Cliffs remains at the head of affairs in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt division thanks to wins in the Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes, four points ahead of impressive Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes victor Cape Blanco (136). Dick Turpin has 112 points and Workforce, victorious in the Investec Derby and Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, has 104 points.

Dual Oaks winner Snow Fairy missed the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes but remains clear in the Cartier-Three-Year-Old Filly category with 118 points, while Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile heroine Misty For Me stays at the top of an unchanged Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly division with 72 points.

There were no changes to the Cartier Sprinter category, with Starspangledbanner (112) still in the vanguard, while Ascot Gold Cup hero Rite Of Passage (48) also remains at the head of an unchanged Cartier Stayer division.

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, commented today: “Champions’ Day at Newmarket on Saturday certainly appeared to live up to its name with fantastic performances from Frankel and Twice Over.

“Frankel’s decisive victory in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes means he remains unbeaten and hopefully there will be plenty more to come from him next year.

“Twice Over is a tremendous horse and it is easy to see why he is trainer Henry Cecil’s favourite. The colt is a model of consistency in Group One races and it was a delight to witness a deserved second successive win in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes.

“As we close in on the season’s climax, our focus turns to assessing the merits of each Cartier Racing Awards contender. With exceptional performers such as Goldikova, Harbinger, Workforce, Canford Cliffs, Midday, Snow Fairy and Frankel to name but a few, it will be fascinating to see how the public and the panel of journalists decide to vote.”

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
FELLOW PROFESSIONALS PAY TRIBUTE TO THE NEWMARKET TRAINER
SIR MICHAEL (Daddy to them all) STOUTE ON HIS 65th BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY.

JUST ONE OF THE MANY TRIBUTES, FROM WALTER SWINBURN
“During the years I rode for Michael as stable jockey, the one thing that stood out was the way he conditioned his horses. He never galloped them to get them fit, and once he saw something in a horse he never needed to see it again – he knew it was there and he brought it out.

Michael could always see the bigger picture. I remember riding PHILSUDSKI in the summer of his four- year- old career. He’d won only a Group 3 at that stage and I’d never had him down as anywhere near top class, but before the Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh Michael told me: “I’ve got the horse right now and I can get him better” . He won the Royal Whip and two runs later was runner-up in the Ark before going on to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The horse who really stands out for me is ZILZAL. He was absolutely electric, and I don’t believe any other trainer could have enabled the horse to fulfil his potential in the way Michael did. In the wrong hands, he’d have been a lost cause.

Michael allowed ZILZAL to train himself, basically. He was very highly strung and Michael worked on getting him mentally right, keeping him under control. I rode him to win a little Leicester maiden on his racecourse debut and three weeks later there he was strolling away with the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. Michael worked miracles with that horse.

One of his favourite phrases is ‘still hungry’, and I am sure that on the way back from Longchamp a few weeks ago that phrase got an airing despite that Arc win filling in one of the very few remaining gaps in his records.

His appetite for the game is still as strong as ever it was – I think he sees himself as he sees some of his horses, like he’s a high- class four- year- old with the potential to be even better next year. On that scale, he’ll still be winning Group 1’s as a ten year old!”

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY

US RACING: BREEDERS’ CUP PICTURE CLEARING AS BIG NAMES COME OUT. CHURCHILL DOWNS USA NOVEMBER 5 AND 6 2010.

http://betting.betfair.com/horse-racing/world-racing/usa/us-racing-breeders-cup-picture-clearing-as-big-names-co-091010.html
Held in the US over two days, the Breeders Cup includes fourteen races that attract the top racing talent from across the globe. Every race except the Breeders Cup Marathon carries prize money of over a million US dollars. With a total of over twenty five million US dollars on offer in prize money, it is little wonder that horses from England, Ireland, France, South Africa and elsewhere are making the trip to the US to challenge the best of their home-grown talent.

The first Breeders Cup was held in November, 1984 at Hollywood Park, California. The venue has traditionally been changed each year to give the greatest possible number of US racing enthusiasts a chance to attend. Only in 2008 and 2009 was the Breeders Cup held in the same place, Santa Anita, California, for two years in a row. Churchill Downs, best known for hosting the Kentucky Derby, is the 2010 venue for the two day meeting held on the fifth and sixth of November, giving East Coast racing fans a chance to witness the world’s best thoroughbred racing.

All eyes will be on Sidney's Candy as he takes on older horses for the first time in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile

Gio Ponti and Sidney's Candy take to the track this weekend and the results of their races could have big implications on the antepost Breeders' Cup markets

"Hooh Why, a Grade 1 winner at Keeneland, should get an ideal trip on the cut-back in the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club Of America and is a "salty" 8-1 on the morning line."As great as last weekend's stakes were, most notably Zenyatta making it 19 for 19 in the TVG Lady's Secret in front of more than 25,000 fans at Hollywood Park, this weekend's stakes are better.

The difference between the two weekends being that this time we have Keeneland and last time we did not. Races that not only have Breeders' Cup ramifications, but are great betting races as well is what Keeneland is all about. From a name recognition standpoint, Gio Ponti and his career earnings of more than $4.3m is the biggest name of the bunch.

Last year's runner up in the Classic to the aforementioned Zenyatta is shortening up his game and is competing in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile presented by Vinery.

A good performance here would probably propel him into a start in the TVG Turf Mile, where he would have to deal with the great Goldikova, who is looking to win the race for a third consecutive year.

Money will be on the fresh and dangerous Courageous Cat. He ran a great second at 22-1 to Goldikova in the Turf Mile last year, and sports a tactical edge over Gio Ponti.

There are two price horses that I like Saturday at Keeneland as well. Hooh Why, a Grade 1 winner at Keeneland, should get an ideal trip on the cut-back in the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club Of America and is a "salty" 8-1 on the morning line. And in the Grade 1 Abu Dhabi First Lady Fantasia at 12-1 morning line will finally get some pace to run at, which in turn should finally allow her the opportunity to display that strong late closing kick that she possesses.

There are three big Breeders' Cup preps in New York this weekend as well. The weird thing about these races is that the horse with the most hype is a horse that has only one career start. Uncle Moe will be a heavy odds on favourite to win the Grade 1 Champagne as he should. In his lone start he completely dismantled his opposition to win a maiden race at Saratoga by nearly 15 lengths in a scorching 1:09:1.

In earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 102 he became one of just two two-year-olds to earn a triple digit Beyer this year. In a Champagne that, to me, did not come up very difficult, I would expect another easy win. An electric win, which very possibly would make him the post time favourite for the BC Juvenile at Churchill next month.

The Grade 1 Ancient Title should be a very interesting BC Sprint prep, in which defending Sprint champion Dancing in Silks looks to regain his from. But all eyes will be on Sidney's Candy as he takes on older horses for the first time in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile.

His turf debut at Del Mar back in August was the "wow" performance of the meeting. He dueled through
ridiculous fractions early and still had the ability to open up late and win the Grade 2 La Jolla in a course record 1:39:2. The Oak Tree Mile looks to offer the talented son of Candy Ride a legitimate test. Not only will he be facing older horses, he is going to have to contend with some other very quick and accomplished horses such as Tropic Storm.

I like Victor's Cry who won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile over this turf course back in May.

But a win from Sidney's Candy would probably make him the second choice in the TVG Breeders' Cup Turf Mile behind the champion Goldikova.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
LAST SATURDAY’S PREVIEW TOOK A LOOK AT REDFORD’S CHANCES
FOR A POSSIBLE *THIRD WIN RUNNING IN THE 3.05 AT ASCOT

*REDFORD aiming to win an almighty treble this afternoon at Ascot in the 3.05 Models 1 Bengough Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) Winner £34,062 over 6f . 19 run. Tanya reports on betting patterns 100/30. 3/1. 11/4 am. Can REDFORD with new partner RICHARD HUGHES win again this afternoon for Dandy Nicholls and Team, and owner Dr Marwan Koukash? NO.

REVIEW
THE FRANKIE FACTOR WAS MISSING LAST SATURDAY WHEN RICHARD HUGHES TOOK THE RIDE TO PARTNER REDFORD AT ASCOT. REPLACING FRANKIE FOR WHATEVER REASON. FRANKIE WHO HAD PARTNERED REDFORD TO WIN HIS LAST TWO RACES, INCLUDING THE AYR GOLD CUP. *REDFORD A SPRINTER.
We will never know for sure now of course. But the key question mark over issues as this one highlights: ‘ If Frankie Dettori had been able to take the ride to partner REDFORD at Ascot (09.10.2010) this day as well, would REDFORD have won for Frankie a third race on the trot?

This further question brings us to consider the part played by a rider/jockey in any race. REDFORD a sprinter, perhaps sprinters more than any other distance horses, need a partner absolutely in tune with their every move, if they are to be allowed to succeed and win. There is a world of difference in the way that Frankie Dettori partners a horse, to the way that Richard Hughes partners a horse.

EG: STRICTLY COME DANCING, (also found in ballet dancing) the best to compare partners. All sorts of dancing partnerships we see in this competition. The best show fast how in tune they are with each other. Same with horses, both competing, and in all the prep work done behind the scenes within each Trainers Team. The skill of each and every handler/rider who carry out all the prep work to include the riding tutorials with each horse, each day, determines the future that each colt or filly will be likely to have the chance to achieve. John Francome pointed out live on this morning’s ‘Morning Line’: “If horses won’t settle, they are no good.”

What John does not tell us this morning however, what are the causes, the reasons that make horses become so unsettled.

We have a very recent example of a horse showing us on the racecourse how unsettled and nervous and difficult to ride he has become, CASELA PARK partner JASON BEHAN competing at Newcastle in August.

Resulting in the BHA ‘Bloodhorse Illiterate’ stewards/panel/QC condemning Eamon Tyrrell and Jason Behan unjustly, giving both three year warning off ban.

BHA ‘Bloodhorse Illiteracy’ has taken this whole incident completely out of perspective and out of context, and in doing so have condemned Tyrrell and Behan for being ‘Bloodhorse Literate.’

Tyrrell and Behan however are both ‘Legally Illiterate’ they went into the BHA trial with no
Legal Team,  due to the huge financial costs involved in taking that route. Whereas the BHA were armed to  the teeth with every Legal advantage point possible. Result unfair trial. No unfair trial can ever be allowed to stand.

The Burnham Report (JC) (BHB) (BHA) not so long ago advised that trainers should employ superstore shelf stackers to come in to handle and ride out thoroughbred racehorses in training belonging to owners. To work part time and to be paid at the minimum wage. Is this how CASELA PARK was originally treated when he started out in training?

Did CASELA PARK have a superstore shelf stacker paid at the minimum wage to handle and ride him out every day as a yearling, and as a two years old?

We  notice that several professional footballers upon retirement, take up racehorse training. Mick Channon immediately springs to mind. IN football each team member is paid a high wage and has to be a talented footballer if chosen to play for a team.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

CHAMPIONS’ MEETING ROWLEY MILE NEWMARKET FRIDAY 15th  & SATURDAY 16th  OCTOBER 2010.

THE CESAREWITCH Trainer Ollie Pears is optimistic that My Arch can crown a superb season for his handler with victory in the £160,000 totesport.com Cesarewitch.

“Soft ground and a high draw would be ideal. He looks set for a good run and I am not surprised that he has been well supported.”

The historic two and a quarter-mile heritage handicap has been on the agenda for the talented eight-year-old all season and he warmed up for his autumn assignment with a rallying neck success in the two-mile Racing UK Sky 432 Handicap on Newmarket’s July Course on 7th August. He is currently a 10/1 chance with totesport.

“Kieren Fallon was going to be on board again but he couldn’t do 8st 4lb so Franny Norton will ride. He has never ridden him but he will be watching the DVDs and he is very much looking forward to taking the ride.

“My Arch has been very popular in the Cesarewitch market having halved in price from an initial 20/1 to his current quote of 10/1, and looks set to run a massive race for his up-and-coming handler.

The market for the totesport.com Cesarewitch is headed the Dermot Weld-trained Universal Truth, who scored in a maiden hurdle on his latest start at the Galway festival in August and is a 7/1 chance with the race sponsor. Fellow Irish challenger Admiral Barry, from the stable of Eoin Griffin, is a 9/1 chance following a comfortable victory in an amateur riders’ handicap at the Curragh on 11th September.

Entries, totesport.com Cesarewitch – sponsor’s prices: 7 Universal Truth, 9 Admiral Barry, 10 Ghimaar My Arch, 12 Manyriverstocross, Sentry Duty, 14 Bergo, Lady Eclair, Majestic Concorde, Red Cadeaux, Theola, 16 Darley Sun, Dayia, Merchant Of Dubai, Ocean’s Minstrel, Precision Break, Tasheba, 20 Ajaan, Cosmic Sun, Deauville Flyer, Hawk Mountain, Mount Helicon, Rangefinder, 25 bar. each way 1/4 1-2-3-4-

totesport spokesman George Primarolo commented: “The totesport.com Cesarewitch is always one of the big betting handicaps of the year and this year’s race will be no different. With high-class handicappers from both the top Flat and Jumps yards at the head of the market, we should be treated to another cracking renewal.

THE DEWHURST STAKES (Group 1) ROWLEY MILE NEWMARKET TURF.
Dubai Dewhurst Stakes is open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres)

The event was established in 1875, and it was originally known as the Dewhurst Plate. It was founded by Tom Gee, and it was named after his Dewhurst Stud in Sussex. The first four winners — Kisber, Chamant, Pilgrimage and Wheel of Fortune — all went on to win one or more of the following year's Classics.

The Dewhurst Stakes is now Britain's most prestigious event for juvenile horses. The most recent winner to subsequently achieve victory in a Classic was New Approach, the winner of the Derby in 2008. The race is now staged during Champions' Day – the second day of Newmarket's two-day Champions' Meeting.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
Close to the end of this Flat Racing Season, means that Flat RaceTrainers and their Teams will be getting yearlings in from the studs and the sales now. Yearlings that bring with them the promise of new dreams, fresh direction, of starting out anew.

All have so much to learn if they are to see a racecourse in 2011 as two year olds.

Highly skilled handler, riders paramount if the right support is to be provided for the ongoing daily prep direction needed, to ensure that confidence is gained through skill, not destroyed by ignorance.

Monty Roberts calls this bringing along the babies, which is exactly right.

An exciting time of the year to meet up with these beautiful colts and fillies just starting out in their lives along the racing road. With so much to learn in a relatively short time span. Futures to be allowed to develop
with confidence inspired.. A top professional rider knows at once how a two year old has been prepared, once in the saddle.

OUT AND ABOUT
GUEST STAR PREVIEW WITH JOHN GOSDEN, WHO WELCOMES JOHN (the greatest jockey) FRANCOME, BRINGING US TO HIS HOME AND HIS HORSES. PREP READY FOR THE EXCITING CHALLENGES OVER THIS WEEKENDS RACING. A DELIGHT.

JOHN GOSDEN bloodhorse literate a professional licenced flat race trainer, horseman of the highest caliber. One of the best this world has ever seen. John’s father, Towser Gosden, was a renowned horseman and trainer of racehorses.

John never considered an alternative career. He describes training racehorses as something that was ‘in the blood’ and a career that he naturally progressed into.

He first began training in the USA and enjoyed much success between the years of 1980 and 1988. He then returned to England to continue his career under a British license.

The fastest horse John ever trained was Oasis Dream. The horse had several Group 1 wins, including the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes and the Darley July Cup, both at Newmarket in 2003.

John’s favourite horse is Ryafan. After a successful early career in Ireland, the horse went to America to campaign in 1997, where he won three top-class races in succession.

These were: the Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Santa Anita, the Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park and the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.

John has trained many awkward horses and says, “like people, many horses have mental problems”. It is the trainer’s job to get the horse mentally, as well as physically, fit for racing.

John’s favourite memories are winning the 1983 Santa Anita Handicap in America and winning the 1997 Vodafone Derby with Benny The Dip.
His most recent Classic win was the 2007 St. Leger Stakes with Lucarno

2008 was a fantastic year for Gosden as he won the QEII Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic with Raven's Pass, as well as well as the Fillies Mile with Rainbow View, and trained nearly 100 winners. His good form
continued in 2009 with 4 Group 1 victories in the year.

Those whom he respects most within the racing industry are former champion trainers Sir Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. John was assistant trainer to both before he began training racehorses in his own name.

Other Hobbies and Interests

John is a keen follower of a range of other sports including rugby, cricket, football, polo and skiing. He particularly enjoys skiing.
John supports Ipswich Town and Blackheath football teams.

His star-sign is Aries.

He enjoys listening to classical music by Mozart and Verdi, as well as songs by Bob Dylan and Bruce Springstein.
His favourite film is ‘Citizen Kane’.
If he were not so busy racing, John would like to dedicate more time to wildlife conservation.

John has great admiration for Nelson Mandela.
He describes his only bad habit as a tendency to suffer from the anxiety of training horses!
