THE RACING POST SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24th 2011
TODAYS BIG TALKING POINT
ANDREW SCUTTS "Looks at who could make headlines this afternoon. Backers seek answers from QUESTIONING.
“WHO will go off favourite for the first leg of the autumn double? It looks like being all change at the head of the market for the Betfred Cambridgeshire. DARE TO DANCE has been all the rage but trainer Jeremy Noseda has raised ground issues to put his participation in doubt. The feeling is this will lead to punters relying on an old ally in John Gosden, responsible for two of the last four winners and three in all including gambled on favourites in HALLING and PIPEDREAMER.
“QUESTIONING has had momentum all this week. He’s trained by Gosden and with his good record in this and other big handicaps, this is the one punters want to be with."

RICHARD HUGHES WRITING IN THE POST EVERY  SATURDAY BRINGS A FRESH PERSPECTIVE FROM THE SADDLE.
ON SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 17th HUGHES MADE THIS STATEMENT:
Two year oldsRgggggg
"Jockey's just want to know the whip rules .... I regard myself as something of a pioneer in correct whip use. I amalways lecturing young jockey's not to hit horses when they are out of contention. I despise people who hit horses when they are not in the first three.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

June 2011RICHARD HUG

Our Approa
“So I was extremely annoyed when I picked up a two-day ban at Kempton on Wednesday for hitting my horse at the start, which came as the result of me making a polite inquiry of the stipendiary steward, Chris Rutter.
“In the second race (6.10pm) I was riding OMNIPOTENT who was refusing to go forward at the start, so I gave him a reminder behind the saddle to encourage him to go forward.
“When I came in I was told that someone had got a ban for giving a horse a reminder at the stalls the other day. I wasn’t aware that the regulators (BHA) had brought in a new rule saying you can’t give a horse a backhander down at the start.
“As long as I have been riding it’s always been acceptable. There’s no difference hitting a horse behind the saddle to go forward whether he is stood still or galloping in a race. The main reason you give a backhander is to go forward. We were always taught to give them a reminder if they won’t go in.
“After the fourth race I went up to Rutter and asked him what the rule was about hitting horses down at the start. He said it was only if it was deemed to have been done in temper.
“That seemed OK to me, but after the fifth race they brought me in and suspended me. I asked the question and they went back to look at the video and then did me. The starter on the night thought it was quite acceptable and said so at the inquiry. I didn’t loose my temper but they said they didn’t accept it. Under the rule I’ve been done for, it’s a minimum of four days for hitting a horse in annoyance.
“I was bemused I only got two days because, after all, the starter had backed me up at the inquiry by saying in no way had I lost my temper. I am going to appeal but the hearing would be the same day as Newmarket on Thursday and I will have a busy enough day there without having to go to London first. Are you allowed to hit them or not? None of us know.
“We prefer not to put blindfolds on our horses. I think it’s safer to give one a simple tap behind the saddle rather than take the risk of putting a blindfold on a horse that’s never had one on before. I’m a horseman not a horse-beater. The reason I am appealing is I’m ashamed as I am not someone that loses his temper down at the start.” ENDS
J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL

This whip issue came to light at Kempton Park (Standard AW) on the evening of Wednesday September 14th 6.10pm Betdaq Multiples HandicapClass 6 for 3yo’s rated 57 – 65
over 1m4f OMNIPOTENT 3 9-7 partner RICHARD HUGHES finished 8th of 12 runners.
Report: Chased leaders to 3f out weakened 2f out 8-1. OMNIPOTENT has not had much racing but does not look as effective over middle distances on this surface as he did on his reappearance on turf over 7f.
For a senior licensed professional flat race rider to find it necessary to make a statement as this: “JOCKEY’S JUST WANT TO KNOW THE WHIP RULES … in the year 2011 -is a sad reflection upon British Horseracing regulation working practices, that such negligence on a scale as this has taken such a damning and dangerous grip. If professionally licensed riders are not allowed to know what the whip rules are how can they be expected to keep them? How can all the young riders just starting out be expected to know what the Whip rules are if the senior riders don't know? Everyone needs to know and to understand what the whip rules are, including the punters. Practising Veterinary surgeons have no idea of how to use a whip, as neither do RSPCA inspectors. That the BHA are intent on solving the present whip crisis by handing this issue over to such bloodhorse illiterate veterinaries and RSPCA officers proves beyond all shadow of doubt they are totally incompetent.
IT IS THE PRINCIPLE behind any and all whip tactics that urgently need to become established, to be recognised and properly understood by us all.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE STRICTLY COME DANCING IS BACK
New Series 1/12 Series 9
HOSTED BY BRUCE FORSYTH AND TESS DALY
Friday September 30th 2011 9.00pm BBC1
All the stars are out tonight
news, pictures and www.radiotimes.com/strictly

“ENTERTAINMENT It’s only three weeks since the 14 celebrities were introduced to their dancing partners, with Bruce Forsyth joking that “On paper this looks like the best show yet. On the dance floor, I’m not so sure.” “Certainly their initial group dance was a bit wooden and only gave a few clues as to who might thrill with their fancy footwork and who might fall flat on their face. Lulu and Jason Donovan were concentrating so hard they looked as if they were sitting A-level maths, while Robbie Savage and Chelsee Healey both spent the entire show grinning from ear to ear.

“But, as we all know, you can be a rubbish dancer and still go far in this show, which will probably come as a great relief to Russell Grant. He’s well placed to be Strictly’s comedy turn and probably will, as Bruno Tonioli predicted, “be the spinning Tardis of dance, taking us to a whole new dimension”. Tonight the first seven couples take the floor, with the next set performing tomorrow. (Saturday October 1st) Jane Rackham Welcome to Planet Strictly:

Come backstage and meet the stars – step forward RT’s ballroom insiders Rory Bremner
and Alex Jones "If you’d told me six months ago I’d be dancing through the streets of Greenwich behind Edwina Currie, Russell Grant and Robbie Savage, I’d have called you barking mad. If I told you I enjoyed every minute of it, the boot maybe on the other foot. Welcome to Planet Strictly. When I was first approached, I was amazed by the warmth people have for the program. It’s an inspiring show, and I quickly realised that far from being mad to do it, I’d be mad not to. It’s the best party on television. I’ve done some sketches in my time, but this is the biggest. And no one knows the script.”
