A PICTORIAL STORY

C4 TO CASH IN THROUGH ADVERTISING AUCTION
RP Monday September 24th
RP by Jon Lees
"Channel 4 will reap a substantial dividend from its securing of terrestrial rights to UK horseracing by auctioning of all prime advertising slots within next year's coverage to bookmakers, a move that could net the broadcaster more than £1 million per betting partner.
"The channel's success in winning exclusive rights to all the sports crown jewels, including the Grand National, Derby and Royal Ascot, alongside those it already shows like the Cheltenham Festival, Glorious Goodwood and the Guineas meeting, has resulted in the introduction of a new process through which the best commercial slots will go to the highest bidder.

"With five packages available for the right to become betting partners during 87 racedays in 2013, the process is set to spark a fierce bidding war, with leading bookmaker advertisers William Hill, Ladbrokes, bet365, Betfair and Paddy Power at the head of the field.

"It could go a long way to recouping the £15m the broadcaster is believed to have paid for the four-year terrestrial rights to racing. It has already negotiated a new deal with Channel 4 Racing sponsor Dubai Holding.

"One media buyer in the bookmaking industry said: What Channel 4  has done is introduce a levy of uncertainty so nobody really knows where they stand. The prices will be driven up slightly by the fear of not being able to access a product, especially with the additional rights holdings they have got.

"There are not many major bookmakers who will feel they can't advertise within that coverage.

"I reckon they (Channel 4) could see revenues increase by about 40 per cent on the back of this. With additional assets like the Grand National next year, plus inflation, you could see prices reach £1m or £1.2m.

"I don't know how many bookmaker advertisers are capable or willing to spend that much money. This is happening across all media, and bookmakers are being targeted as a growth area so are spending more year on year."

Sealed bids must be submitted by Wednesday week, when the auction will take place over two rounds. The top five bids from the first round will be carried through to the second round, when those successful will be given an option to increase their bids.

"After the second round of bidding, packages will be awarded in order of bidding price, with the top bid receiving the top package. There will also be a further exclusive auction process for partners to use live odds technology from April 2013.

"Chris Braithwaite, agency principal  at C4, said "With the acquisition of such iconic events as Royal Ascot, the Grand National and the Derby, Channel 4 is a one-stop shop for bookmakers wanting to align their brand with the very best of British horseracing."

"Come round the other ear it's cheaper"
