DONCASTER ST LEGER 2012 RESULTS REVIEW

CAMELOT and JOSEPH O'BRIEN so nearly achieved their dream of winning the illusive Triple Crown when finishing second to ENCKE partner MICKAEL BARZALONA. So near and yet seemingly so far an almost impossible feat, as Tanya, Mac, Racing Post, Pricewise Team and Racing Plus stats show.

Horseracing has always been full or surprises, and will always be full of surprises, the nature of this unique and truly remarkable sport.

M's meets up with Coolmore's John Magnier before the St Leger who puts this third and last leg of the Triple Crown attempt into true perspective fast, when he says "So much has already been achieved with CAMELOT, in winning first the 2000 Guineas, then the Derby to come through all that to actually get him here for the chance to be able to actually win the St Leger the third and last leg of the Triple Crown, something else.

This afternoon at just nineteen years old, Joseph felt the shock of realising he and CAMELOT were not going to catch ENCKE  in the dying strides of this race.  Tough stuff a sinking disappointment for all involved. Taking part the key, win loose or draw. Big winners, brave losers, home safe and sound, all is not lost. So much has already been achieved.

Team O'Brien Ballydoyle a mighty bloodhorse literate horseracing team, a team that lights up horseracing on the world's horseracing stage to bring bloodhorse literacy to the attention of all people, a feat even greater than the Olympic Games. Coolmore's pioneering achievements into thoroughbred breeding around the world quite amazing a mega contribution on the world's thoroughbred breeding stage never before realised. A brilliant achievement.

JOHNNY MURTAGH guest star on the Morning Line tells us that when you drive through the gates of Ballydoyle you come to the life-size statue
of Triple Crown Winner NIJINSKY (1970) You wonder about the life and times of NIJINSKY.
Then you think of just how many great horses have passed through these gates ongoing over decades and you feel that wonderful buzz. Wow and how .... AMAZING

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

Joseph O'Brien

RP Thursday 13 September JONATHAN MULLIN talks to CAMELOT'S
unflappable jockey as he prepares for his date with destiny.

"Do horses like CAMELOT know how good they are? Asks Jonathan.

 "He knows, Joseph says slowly
fighting back a smile. "After the Derby he stood and
pricked out his ears and looked at all the cameras. You think some horses might
be a bit uptight after running such a big race with all the crowds and all that
comes with the Derby at Epsom. But he stood quiet as a lamb.

He loves the attention and he knows
that he is one of the best. And he is."O'Brien's affection for the
horse is unbending, his confidence in him infectious. "You look forward to
every week when you get to ride him in a piece of work and ride him in the
races. He's a dream to ride, he loves what he does,"

"It comes very natural to him.
You just have to let him come alive in your hands the last couple of furlongs,
he knows when to go and he relaxes in the first part of his races. He's easy
and he's not like any horse I have ever rode. I never thought I'd have anything
to do with a horse with a chance of winning a Triple Crown. I've seen all fhe
videos of NIJINSKY and LESTER PIGGOTT and to have a horse like CAMELOT is
unbelievable. You might dream that way but you never think it's going to
happen."
JOSEPH say's "When you get to ride a horse like CAMELOT
it's all worth it.

quote "the loss of a great friend, of somebody who made a big impact on my
life and career something I respected every time I was around him. He was
probably the most intelligent horse I was ever around,
he had a  lot of common sense, he loved to
run and battle, and he was an easy horse to ride.
I just appreciated his company and I think everyone else around him did.
The horse had such class and presence.
I  could always trust him to give me his best. I always knew he would run a big
race. He was very, very special and everyone he touched was awed by him.
He humbled a lot of people,  He was such a gentleman,
a strong horse-just very dignified. He knew he was the real
deal , no word about or from the horseman who's daily
work had nurtured and developed Affirmed's life .....
