TURNING £2.60 into a grand?  Should be easy enough ...

Pic: Joe Coral: his original name did not lend itself to catchy slogans

"EXCITING  news! A couple of weeks ago an email arrived from Coral. Not, unfortunately, from the once famous actress Coral Browne but from the bookmaker.

"If it had been from the other Coral, notorious for her bawdy humour, it might have included her comment on the unlikely affair between actor Godfrey Tearle (aged 65) and actress Jill Bennett (aged 19). "I could never understand what he saw in her, " said Browne, "until I watched her eat corn-on-the-cob at Le Caprice. "

Years later, when Coral played the part of a lesbian in the ground breaking film The Killing of Sister George, a critic complained that "she twiddled with Susannah York's nipple as if trying to find Radio Three" .

"Anyway, the email wasn't from that Coral, who died in 1991, but from the firm named after Joe Coral, who was actually Joseph Kagarlitski but realised something had to change after launching the slogan 'Never a Quarrel, Bet with Kagarlitski" .

"Coral must be doing something about dormant accounts because the email was to let me know I hadn't  used mine for a long time, and there was £2.60 in it. It made me wonder how much there had been in it to start with.

"The message didn't continue, 'You deposited 1,000 at the start of the 2011 Cheltenham
Festival. After Rock On Ruby was beaten a short head on the Wednesday, you started chasing. The £2.60 has been there since your ridiculously ill-advised losing bet on Celticello in the selling hurdle at Fakenham on Gold Cup Day. At that time, we did refer you to the "Tips to stay in control' section of  gambleaware.co.uk " I thought about it for a while, then decided it would be a wonderful challenge to turn the £2.60 into £1,000 so that is what I resolved to do. On August 23 I had £1.30 each-way on Bow Creek, at York, at 50-1. It finished third. £2.60 was already £14.30. The next day I had £5 each-way on Al Waab at Windsor at 6-1. It finished second. There was now £16.80 in my non- dormant account. Only £983.20 to go. Easy. Then I completely forgot about it, which wasn't altogether my fault, as there were no reminders forthcoming from Coral, along the lines of  'we  notice you have not used your account for three days. Is something wrong? Can we help with the shopping?'

"As soon as I remembered again on Monday, after deciding the Ian Carnaby Selling Handicap at Brighton was impossible (it was-Father Fred won), I had £8.40 each way on Push Me at Hamilton. It finished fourth, where you get paid, but the other kind, where you don't.

"ITS a shame, because I felt confident I was up to the challenge and travelling nicely, only to have victory cruelly snatched from me. I half-wish Coral hadn't got in touch with me at all, because in the end their message brought only disappointment and defeat. On the other hand, Coral may not be alone.

"Dear Ladbrokes, Hills, the Tote, Victor Chandler, bet365, et al  I can't remember whether or not I've got an account with you, and even if I have I won't be able to remember the password. Would you please have a look for me and let me know how much is sitting there, if anything, so that I can start turning it into £1,000 without further delay. Thank-you.

"PS Perhaps you would round it up to the nearest pound, as a marketing ploy.

"PPS Hang on a minute. Something's just turned up at Coral.

"On Wednesday when I logged on to my Coral account just to check the facts, there was a message reading, 'Welcome back. Cash balance £0.00' . But there was also a free bet token for £1.68, representing a ten per cent refund in recognition of my skill in having lost £16.80 at Hamilton.

"Suddenly the £1,000 sprang back into my mind's eye and, without further ado or thought, I entrusted the whole £1.68 to the care of Castagna Girl, Shane Kelly and Bath's idiosyncratic sprint track. All they had to do, at 4-1, was conspire to beat the odds-on favourite Shilla.

"Have you heard the expression 'odds-on favourite won as an odds-on favourite should'? The 2pm at Bath was a suitable occasion for its employment. Afterwards, Kelly probably stood in the space reserved for loosers (the sign reads 'Second') and explained that if Castagna Girl had run faster she might well have won. It's a pity she didn't.

"It would be nice to report that all was not lost because another visit to Coral's website revealed another special offer entitled me to a free 16.8p bet. Unfortunately, the message simply said, "Welcome back. Cash balance £0.00'

What sort of a welcome is that?"

J. Margaret Clarke Turfcall Comment (JMC)

David's closing paragraph  "It would be nice to report that all was not lost because another visit to Coral's website revealed another special offer entitled me to a free 16.8p bet. Unfortunately, the message simply said, "Welcome back. Cash balance £0.00'
What sort of a welcome is that?" Awful.

Tom's narrative this morning makes interesting reading:
"Take Lady Lara to spring massive surprise at 33-1" .
REVIEW LADY LARA finished 3rd 12-1  to IHTIMAL 11-10f
"THE ground at Doncaster dries quickly and the times yesterday suggested it wasn't too testing at the track.
"However, there is more rain forecast overnight and it won't take too much to turn the ground soft, so it's hard to tell what conditions are going to be like.
"If the ground does get testing there is a longshot worth backing in the Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes (3.15) .
"Alan Jarvis's filly Lady Lara has shown up well in good races over a shorter trip (12-1)on a fast surface this season, yet her pedigree strongly suggests that a mile on soft ground is going to bring masses of improvement.
"So highly did Jarvis rate this filly she began her career in the Albany at Royal Ascot and didn't disappoint when finishing eighth .

RACING POST
PRICEWISE TOM SEGAL GIVES US HIS CLUES TO THESE 4 LIVE RACES
Tom takes a much closer look at  the first race on today's  racecard  1:40:  and shares his findings with us (P14-15)

TOM kicks off: YES YES YES AQLAAM VISION WINS AND SO WELL AT 9-1
TRAINER and TEAM:  BRITTAIN NEWMARKET
"I'M NOT sure Clive Brittain would go far in Strictly Come Dancing as his Group-race winning dance isn't the best, but one of the joys of this Flat season has been his return to the big time with Rizeena.
JMC: Perspective, dance moves for whom? For AQLAAM VISION hopefully when she comes back into the winners enclosure. All racehorses are very observant when it comes to the movement of people around them. Clive's little winner victory dance is true to purpose in perspective to show his winner how pleased he is. Looks like Brittain would have no problem with Strictly Come Dancing. Yes, yes, yes.

RUNNER (racehorse):  AQLAAM VISION
"RIZEENA  is the stable star but is by no means the only juvenile success story from the yard this year. In fact there aren't many trainers with a better record with two-year-olds this season than Brittain. If you had backed all his juveniles you would be nearly £50 in profit to a £1 stake.

TYPE OF RACE: 2yo Fillies Nursery Handicap

HOW MANY RUNNERS: 14

THE TRIP (distance): 6f+

THE GOING:  Rain - softened ground stated to be GOOD TO SOFT
"The big worry about her is whether she will handle the rain-softened ground, but there is no doubt she is improving fast and she traveled like a good horse when just worried out of it by a well-handicapped Godolphin colt over a mile at Salisbury last time.

TRAINER TEAM FORM; TEAM CLIVE BRITTAIN
"In the last ten days Brittain has saddled big price maiden winners at Beverley and Ascot and he also won two of the more hotly contested nurseries run this season, with Dancealot at Newmarket and Bahamian Heights at York.

"Those winners augur well for the prospects of the Brittain trained Aqlaam Vision in the EBF Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery at Doncaster (1.40) and at 12-1 she is worth backing."

"There are very few people I let ride Promise and Lush but when I’m away Holly Swain, my rider, rides them. She’s exceptional and is currently riding at one star level although she has competed at two star. She worked for me in New Zealand and she’s been here in the UK for a couple of years. I can go away and she’ll do everything I need to keep them ticking over and I'll jump back on and they will be as good as ever. She’s brilliant. The only other people who ride them are Andrew Gould, my dressage coach, Mark Todd, who jumps on them when he can and Erik Duvander will jump them."

Clare Balding has lived all her life in the Equus Zone. She understands the skills to be learned, and the skills in action performed in this event so brilliantly  yesterday. The highly intelligent horses competing there have taken 5 to 6 years to train. The polished accuracy between horse and rider for all to observe,  is no fluke, no accident.  The cross country jumping track massive with every type of fence including jumping in, jumping through, and jumping out of water.

Fox-Pitt fourth after dressage in quest for seventh
Burghley Horse Trial title

PUBLISHED:00:13, 7 September 2013| UPDATED:00:14, 7 September 2013

World No 2 William Fox-Pitt has put himself in a strong position to restore British eventing's feelgood factor as he pursues his seventh title at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

Fox-Pitt lies fourth after dressage on his 2011 Burghley champion Parklane Hawk, while three other British riders - Tina Cook, Nicola Wilson and Oliver Townend - all hold top 10 placings.

It sets up an intriguing cross-country battle on Saturday, with realistic hopes of home success just a week after the Great Britain team slumped to a 20-year European Championship low by finishing outside the medal places in Malmo.

'He did some super work out there,' said Fox-Pitt, who won individual bronze - the 17th major championship medal of his stellar career - last weekend.

'Burghley is a great place for him - he has been first and third here in the past - and he is raring to go. He knows what is going to happen on Saturday.'

New Zealander Jonathan Paget leads the way with Clifton Promise, raising his hopes of emulating Townend four years ago by winning Badminton and Burghley in the same season, on a score of 36.7.

TEAM CH4 EQUUS ZONE GUIDE

BERKSHIRE
Two year old, bay colt born on April 11th 2011

TEAM COLE

PAUL COLE:

Royal Ascot 2013

Jim Crowley

Jon Lees "Cole nervous over soft going for Berkshire

"PAUL COLE said yesterday his outstanding Royal Ascot winner BERKSHIRE  would have to prove himself all over again at Doncaster on Saturday, and admitted he would be nervous about running him if the ground turned soft.

"The  colt, who beat subsequent Listed winner Bunker, as well as Group 3 Sweet Solera scorer Ihtimal, to loose his maiden status in the Chesham Stakes, will have his first start in 84 days in the At The Races Champaign Stakes, a race that both Cole and owner HRH Sultan Ahmed Shah won 19 years ago with Sri Pekan.

"Everything has gone smoothly, " said Cole. "He's not unsound or stuffy, which makes life easier, and he's on schedule. We planned this race a long time ago because he's not really a two-year-old. He looks progressive, so you don't take  him here, there and everywhere at two if you think he is going to go on.

"Doncaster clerk of the course Roderick Duncan said yesterday: "We've had 4.5mm of rain today but I walked the track  this afternoon and the straight is where I want it to be, generally good.

"We've more showers forecast overnight but only around 1mm and I'll see in the morning how it's soaked in. I've kept the description as good, good to firm in places, but the rain is certainly starting to ease it in places.

Royal Ascot: Behind the scenes in pictures

"PAUL COLE'S BERKSHIRE ran out a convincing winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal June 18 - 22 Ascot 2013.
Sent off at 16-1 after finishing third on his debut at Newbury, the Jim Crowley-ridden winner came from last to first within a matter of strides.
Drawn 21 of 21, the son of Mount Nelson bounded two and a half lengths clear of 11-4 favourite Bunker, with Godolphin's Ihtimal third.
Cole used to be a man renowned for his training of two-year-olds and was winning the race for a fourth time.
Cole said: "It's been a long gap (since last Royal Ascot winner) and when you've had a lot of success it's nice to have a few with chances.
"He's always been good at home but we haven't much to work him with - everything he's done has been pleasing, thoughout.
"The plan was today and he won't do much more this year because he's enormous - just one more run, I'd have thought.
"Next year he'll be a better horse."
