There's no certainty about the Arc - not after Last Feather

"BEFORE you set off for Arc weekend, full of joie de vivre and euros, it's worth  bearing in mind that it's less that 230 years since thousands of people had their heads cut off by Madame Guillotine, to celebrate the French Revolution. I'm not saying it will happen to you but it may be prudent to steer clear of the Place de la Concorde, where Madame Guillotine used to live.

"If you do choose to live dangerously , remember that the going at Longchamp is very important and the going on Qater Prix de l'Arc de Triumphe day is often soft. This simple fact can be used to the discerning turfist's advantage.

"For instance, in 1982 Barry Hills ran a three year- old filly called Last Feather, by the 1968 Arc winner Vaguely Noble. Last Feather had won the Musidora Stakes and finished third in the Oaks. She was, as I recall (an expression meaning, I haven't got my form books or Barry Hills with me and my memory's not what it was so I may be wrong) , a filly with a high knee action  expected , at least by me, to revel in the extremely testing conditions.

"This was a fact overlooked by all but the most expert analysts, the rest of the bunch choosing to bang on about Assert, who had won the Prix du Jockey Club and Irish Derby, the duel Ascot Gold Cup winner who was trying to prove he wasn't just a stayer.

"A handful of perceptive punters seized on Last Feather's ludicrously long pari-mutuel odds  of 67-1 and forced them into a slightly less ludicrous 58-1. It was a tremendous bet and, as the great Steve Cauthen  set off towards victory I congratulated myself on a rather clever and hugely profitable investment.

"The reasoning was flawless but, through no fault of mine, Last Feather finished 14th, a baffling  outcome that amazingly attracted absolutely no attention at the time. . Observers were so busy rambling on about Ardross's tete  defeat by Akiyda that they overlooked the real story of the race.

"If Hills  or Cauthen were interviewed  afterwards, I missed it but assumed that their reaction was along the lines of, "I'm shocked. It's the most disappointing day of my racing life. If you feel as certain as I did that a horse is going to win a big race and this happens ...
I can only apologise to anyone who backed her . I'm seriously thinking of giving up. "

"Since then both men have, as a matter of fact, given up. My case rests.

"As far as I know, Hills has remained silent on the subject and if I ask anyone else , they say something stupid such as, "she wasn't good enough, that's why she  was 58-1. " What idiots.

"IT RATHER soured me for future Arcs and my prejudice wasn't helped by Dancing Brave's celebrated success in 1986. Yes it was a wonderful performance, yes it was a particularly strong field, yes it was a privilege to be sitting in the living room watching Pat Eddery smile. No I didn't have much of a bet on him. I'd done that in the Derby and, although convention has it that one shouldn't speak ill of the dead (although I've just read a book about Stalin- what a murderous  tyrant he was) , Greville Starkey  made a complete balls-up of it at Epsom. I can forgive but I can't forget (which is more than can be said for Stalin).

"Then 24 years later I finally backed an Arc winner and I would like to record my thanks to Workforce, Sir Michael Stoute, Ryan Moore and Prince Khalid Abdullah, without whom my £20 each- way bet would have been fruitless at  6-1.

"The margin between victory and defeat is so slim. If Workforce has been racing without his head, it would have been Nakayama Festa, Yoshitaka Ninomiya, Masayoshi Ebina and Shinichi  Izumi doing the celebrating.

"Nothing's certain in life (what a stupid saying that is) . Even at Longchamp you can't be sure that the going will be soft, witness exhibit number one, Paris, October 1, 2006. All it needed for Reverence to win the Prix  de l'Abbaye was some rain. The autumn rain that Longchamp is famous for, the autumn rain in abundance, la pluie d'automne. There wasn't any, the ground was good, and Reverence, a  noted mudlark, was beaten a neck. His trainer Eric Alston was gutted and so was I.

Treve  3 8-8  partner Thierry Jarnet win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Sunday October 6 2013

1-111 TREVE - THIERRY JARNET  light up Paris for Team Criquette Head - Maarek in brilliant style dazzling the crowd at Longchamp with an unbelievable sprint clear to the line,  easy,  magic. 48-10.

Treve is a great mover, she doesn't hit the ground, as neither does she get bogged down in soft ground, she flows over the ground like a ballet dancer hence her speed advantage.

Everything has joined up in Treve's education to date, giving her the advantage points to thrive and find her own confidence throughout a carefully prepared highly skilled career path. Make no mistake about that.

Something that the Rip Off Britain Political and Horseracing Governments have refused to recognise over the last 6 decades. Cashing in big time financially for only themselves at other peoples expense, to include the horses.  Now government caught out over doing the same sort of thing re the sale of the Royal Mail, the  Post Office.  One would have thought that the Royal Mail belonged to our Queen and her people. Therefore not the governments to sell off in the first place.  EG governments sale of The Tote just another fraudulent financial government manouver.  I  digress.

Motivator filly quickens four lengths clear

Stallion statistics: Motivator
The Group One Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly on Sunday went the way of Criquette Head Maarek's improving Treve (Motivator), who stepped up on an impressive Saint-Cloud trial win to beat Alain de Royer-Dupre's Chicquita by four lengths, showing an impressive turn of foot in the straight. Prix Saint-Alary winner Silasol was third.
The lightly-raced Treve is now unbeaten in three starts. A Head family homebred, she is a half sister to Listed Grand Prix de Marseille winner Trois Rois out of a winning Anabaa half sister to stakes winner and Group One placegetter Tsigane. The second dam is an own sister to Group One Prix Saint-Alary winner Treble, out of an unraced daughter to multiple Group One winner Triptych. The fourth dam, Trillion, won the Group One Prix Ganay.

Three Troikas

Three Troikas (born 1976) was a French Thoroughbred champion racehorse who was owned, trained, and raced by the three members of the famous Head family.
A granddaughter of Northern Dancer, the filly was purchased by Alec Head's Haras du Quesnay from South African construction magnate Artur Pfaff. She was raced under wife Ghislaine Head's name, was trained by their daughter Criquette, and was ridden by their son Freddy.

The clues were there ... but did you spot them?

Racing Post yesterday Gerald Delamere (page 18)
"ARC rivals won't be able to resist Treve's charge. "
GD "TREVE partner FRANKIE DETTORI Team HEAD-MAAREK four-length Prix de Diane victory has worked out properly as she had two subsequent Group/Grade 1 winners behind. She quickened at least twice when charging from the back to land the Vermeille, which was slowly run for at least a mile. Eleven fillies have won the Arc in the past 40 years and she has the Diane/Vermeille profile similar to Zarkava, Akiyda and Three Troikas (also trained by Criquette Head-Maarek), She can go one better than her great grand-dam Trillion, who was runner-up to Alleged in 1978."
"Selection Treve, "
" Alternative Ruler Of The World. "

DES CULLEN at present is going through a tough time, attempting to beat prostate cancer.
He was admitted to a hospital 30 miles from his home on Friday September 13th after experiencing .... suffering a bad week of struggling alone. An overwhelming experience for anyone to find themselves, in a hospital . More so if you are feeling like death warmed up.

Des home from hospital on Thursday October 3rd. There is a rota of  daily carers, all looking worn out, completely stressed out themselves. There is a nurse who calls round to provide clean dressings. The emergency doctor is alerted on Saturday morning. The advice received to contact the local Doctor on Monday morning. So where was the local Doctor on Friday, Saturday and Sunday one is left to wonder?

A request for a home visit from the local Doctor was made first thing on Monday morning as advised by the emergency Doctor over the phone on Saturday.. A Doctor arrived at 12 noon on Monday.

Wondering why the local Doctor did not manage to find the time to call round on Friday October 4th?

The British government National Health Service found not to work in practice. End of story.
Sick and suffering people left to bare the consiquences of decades of government malpractice and  negligence nationwide. All hidden under a massive heap of theory.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9th 2013. EQUUS ZONE .
CH4 Morning Line on Saturday bring news that there is to be an internal inquiry into the way that British and Global Horseracing is being governed and regulated.

Bloodhorse Illiterate Lord Stevens to head inquiry

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Princess Haya have achieved Bloodhorse Literacy in their own right, as has our own Queen Elizabeth 11,  herself.

This inquiry is seriously flawed before it has even started, the same as the governments Bloodhorse Illiterate  Horseracing Whip Review.

Last Updated: October 3, 2013 8:16am

"Lord Stevens will conduct an internal inquiry into the global racing empire of Sheikh Mohammed.

"He said in a statement: "I have been asked by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed to oversee an internal inquiry that will examine organizational structures, internal communication and veterinary practices at all of the major components of Sheikh Mohammed's equestrian properties and operations, including Darley, Godolphin, Meydan and Janah, the equine flight company  "
