In your Racing Post yesterday Peter
Thomas met up with Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani the man preparing Postponed
for Ascot on Saturday who is also eying a milestone in Germany next month.
LUCA CUMANI:
“HE’S more than 40 years
into his English sojourn and Luca Cumani can afford to laugh about it now, but
there was a time when the doubtful charms of his adopted country must have
threatened him running straight back to Milan, screaming dementedly in Italian.
“Back in the day, when Blighty had yet to embrace all things
continental and was still living in a dark age of boiled beef and carrots, the
young émigré, by now under the wing of Henry Cecil at Warren Place, tested the
cultural waters with a prank that highlighted the gulf he was attempting to
bridge. When I came over, England was better run than Italy but with worse
food, explains the 66 –year- old with a wicked grin, and when I was working for
Henry there was a girl there who asked me one day how you grew spaghetti ….
Luca Cumani - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaIn your Racing Post today Pages 1 and 2. Jon Lees brings a word of caution from Gosden:
"The all conquering Investec
Derby and Coral-Eclipse winner is a top-priced 1-2 for the Group I, but Gosden
said the unbeaten three-year-old would be up against the cream of the
older-horse middle-distance division in the Qipco-backed Ascot midsummer
showpiece from which, only duel Prix de Triomph Treve is missing.
Alastair Down brings news, from Team (John) Gosden :
"GOLDEN HORN, the colt who has given this
season genuine heft, was in action on
the wall-mounted big screen in John Gosden’s office at Clarehaven last
Thursday. This is the Now Show with Golden Horn odds-on for Saturday’s King
George. Gosden says: “This is him working this morning on Waterhall. It was no
more than a seven-furlong breeze – he’s a fit horse and will do this again on
either Monday or Tuesday.
“
Next up is Eagle Top and the footage suggests a slightly more serious piece of
work without being gun-to-the-head stuff with the four-year-old quickening up
in style.
“Eagle Top is third favourite for the big
race and Gosden says: “I am pleased with him and he worked very well this
morning. I was happy with him going into the Hardwick but things did not go
according to plan. “
“This is an oblique reference to the
contretemps between Eagle Top’s jockey Frankie Dettori and Adam Kirby on
Postponed at Royal Ascot. Gosden made his displeasure with Kirby abundantly
clear. It is not an open wound but the race still rankles with him, and it is
no secret that Dettori and Kirby are not on speaking terms.
“Eagle Top was the subject of
considerable stable confidence that day but he could not get to within three
lengths of Snow Sky. Gosden contents himself with a simple observation:
“Eagle Top is a very legitimate
older-horse contender for the King George. “
“The Hardwick was a very rare cloud
passing over the sun that has otherwise shone unceasingly on Gosden and his
team all season.
“He is £1 million clear in his quest for
a second trainer’s championship, there is a Derby one-two freshly incised to
the record book, Jack Hobbs knocked his Irish Derby field out of the ground, and just nine days after running in
the Oaks Star Of Seville took the Prix de Diane under a superb Dettori steer. “
Atzeni replaces Kirby on Postponed
By Richard Birch
“ADAM KIRBY has been replaced by
Andre Atzeni for the ride on Postponed in Ascot’s midsummer showpiece, the King
George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
“Kirby has ridden the Luca
Cumani-trained colt on his last three starts, notably a controversial Hardwick
Stakes third to Snow Sky after which John Gosden, trainer of the runner up
Eagle Top, was highly critical of the riders tactics.
“Gosden could not hide his anger
after the race at Ascot and spoke out to the effect that Kirby’s riding was not
in the true spirit of racing, claiming his tactics were “not clean and not intelligent
“.
“Cumani said last night: “Sheikh
Mohammed Obaid has decided to give the ride to Andrea as he won on the horse last
year. “Andrea was the regular partner of Postponed throughout his
three-year-old campaign last season, the pair teaming up to land two valuable
races, highlighted by the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York where he beat one of Saturday’s
rivals Snow Sky by two and a quarter lengths in the style of a rapidly
improving middle-
“Kirby’s name appears beside three horses
on the advanced card for Newmarket on Saturday, one of them, Fibre Optic in the
1m5f handicap, for Cumani.
“Postponed has yet to win in three
races this year, finishing runner-up to Gosden’s Western Hymn in the Group 3
Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown, third to Al Kazeem in the Group 1
Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, and then third to Snow Sky at Royal Ascot.
“In the latter race Kirby, who became
Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s retained rider when Atzeni signed for Qatar
Racing and Frankie Dettori were involved in a highly publicised bumping match
after both jockey’s tried to get an early position just in behind hot favourite
Telescope, who they wanted to track.
“Postponed, a best price 12-1 chance
to secure a first Group I win in the King George, faces the sternest task in
his career at the Berkshire track against unbeaten Investec Derby and Coral-
Eclipse hero Golden Horn, generally 4-9 shot. “
