48hr decs and rain don't mix

Richard Fahey ‏(@RichardFahey) is likely one of many trainers frustrated by today's rain: "This is why 48 hour declarations are a disaster. No rain forecast but it's raining! Races would be a lot different if we declared today!" (23 hours ago)

C4 LIVE RACING THIS AFTERNOON
NEWMARKET
Feature Race

3.30 Newmarketbet365 Criterion Stakes (Group 3} (Class 1) Winner £34.026

David Ashforth fires a warning today in his Racing Post Musings page 11, similar to C4 Jim McGrath earlier:  On the John Smith's Northumberland Plate, " Although splendid in its way and rich in history, is jolly difficult to decipher there are so many horses taking their chances this afternoon, all carrying different weights, on changeable ground, which is always a warning sign, a bit like a lighthouse."

"THOSE of the elderly disposition will remember the 1977 version, in which Sea Pigeon finished second to Tug Of War, who won the race again the following year.

"Two years after Sea Pigeon's defeat, the popular hero won a memorable Ebor at York when carrying 10st including however much Jonjo O'Neill weighed at the time. So, via Sea Pigeon O'Neill has a connection with the Northumberland Plate  and - lo and behold - he has a runner in this year's race. Tominator.

"I haven't asked O'Neill if this has any relevance, for fear that he won't say, "Yes, it's true. I loved Sea Pigeon and, ever since he was beaten in the Pitman's Derby, it's been an ambition of mine to win the race, my biggest ambition, really. Somehow, it's niggling me all these years and I feel that winning it would put things right. I enjoyed winning the Ascot Stakes with Well Sharp, of course, but this is something else. I want to do it for Sea Pigeon."

"Obviously, O'Neill might not have said anything of the sort, which is why it's easier just to make it up and hope he doesn't sue.

"It's a big responsibility for Tominator to bear, as is the burden of 9st 10lb- considerably more than the 8st 5lb he carried when winning the race in 2011 when trained by Reg Hollinshead. Tominator was rated 90 then, now he's rated 102. It doesn't look too promising but say not the struggle nought availeth.

"On his seasonal reappearance Tominator was a creditable third in the Chester Cup off a rating of 100, is well drawn and has Graham Lee to help. It could happen. So, of course, could various other things, which is why big handicaps like the Northumberland Plate are much admired by bookmakers.

"It's a big day for Lee, and for Jim Goldie, who fires off his star sprinters Jack Dexter and Hawkeyethenoo in a pair of Group 3 races at Newcastle and Newmarket. If Jack Dexter can reproduce his terrific run when fourth, beaten less than two lengths, in the King Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, he will win. That race, however, was only 11 days ago.

"I wonder if Goldie will be presented with  a decanter, and Lee a pair of tumblers.

NEWCASTLE
Feature Race
3.15  John Smith's  Northumberland Plate (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 2m.
Winner £92,385
We meet up with trainer Brian Ellison and jockey TOM EAVES who tackle The Northumberland Plate (3.15) this afternoon for owner P J Martin's MASHAARI (IRE) 4 8-9 partner TOM EAVES (bottom weight) (top weight) TOMINATOR 6 9-10 partner GRAHAM LEE trainer Jonjo O'Neill for P A Byrne.

As Jimbo points out this morning some of these races today are dangerous to play in. Just perfect for filling the bookmakers satchels.

Welcome to Brian Ellison Racing

TOM EAVES partners MASHAARI 4 8-9 in the 3.15 Northumberland Plate but  can TEAM ELLISON win this?  What do you think? He has Bottom Weight with the other fancied horse TOMINATOR  6 9-10 with top weight. A big field.
Tanya introduces us to Jon Ridley (bookmaker) (Pitch 2 On The Rails this afternoon at Newcastle). Jon tells us his Dad was a bookmaker 60 years ago. Since, Jon has taken over as bookmaker ongoing over the last 45 years. Jon tells us that this 3.15 Northumberland Plate Handicap (2m) at Newcastle is a hugely popular race day with all the local people.

RULER OF THE WORLD 3 9-0 (IRE) partner JOSEPH O'BRIEN handler presenter  trainer A P O'Brien for Magnier, Tabor, and Smith Coolmore.
An interesting race. With no racing as a two year old, RULER OF THE WORLD went into the British Derby with only two previous race experiences. Expected today to make this his fourth win. Wait and see how much improvement all these three year olds have made since they last raced. They are all very young still, with much to learn. Looks like LIBERTARIAN will find this track easier than he found  the Epsom track in the British Derby.

CURRAGH IRELAND
Feature Race
6.30 DubaiDuty Free Irish Derby(Group 1) 1m4f. Winner e725,000
WIN: TRADING LEATHER (IRE) 3 9-0 partner KEVIN MANNING handler minder MOHAMMED ABID trainer Jim Bolger for owner Jackie Bolger. breeder Jim Bolger. 6-1.

Looks like the British Derby turned out to be a grueling race, knocked the stuffing out of
RULER OF THE WORLD and LIBERTARIAN.

STARK NEWS FROM GREAT LEIGHS
Tony Smurthwaite brings news "Great Leighs vents fury as BHA dismisses fixture application. All-weather track will not resume racing in 2014."
"Great Leighs fury at fixture snub."
Nick meets up with Keith Brown Chairman at the track, Keith tells us, " looks like a fight through the courts."  Very dissapointing and difficult for everyone.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

BRITISH WIMBLEDON TENNIS TOURNAMENT NOW ON
(week two of two next week)

WORLD TENNIS RULES APPLY WORLDWIDE

ALL TOP TENNIS PLAYERS WORLDWIDE KNOW THE RULES OF TENNIS
JMC. We are talking here about tennis where a Tennis Court is used marked out just the same in every country, with Tennis Racquets and Tennis Ball equipment same, plus a Tennis Net..
Anyone can toss a tennis raquet or a tennis ball without fear of hurting anything or any person.

SO WHERE ARE THE

WORLD RULES OF HORSERACING?

Where horses are left open far too often to government bloodhorse illiterate abuse, as in Britain.

No one can treat a live flesh and blood racehorse to such reckless abandon without fear of injury, hurt, fear. Or can they? Are they? Who are guilty of doing this every day?
Who are guilty of letting down the Licensed British trainers, handlers. riders, jockeys in Britain every day? Who are they? Why are they being allowed to get away with such shocking abuse every single day? Of blighting this sport so badly and for so long?
