CLARE BALDING RACING QUEEN
Clare Balding presenter of The Queen: a passion
for horses (9.00pm BBC1) has racing in
the blood.
Champion Lady Rider, this prize in 1990 was the culmination
of her success as an amateur flat jockey before she turned her hand to racing journalism.
Royal favourite Her grandad, l father and brother all
trained horses for Queen Elizabeth, the Queen used to breakfast with the
Baldings when visiting their stables.
Or not? In a race in 1989 Clare cut across Princess Anne,
almost knocking her out of the race.

DOCUMENTARY Even without the fact that the Balding family
has long trained the royal steeds, Channel 4Racing’s Clare would still be the
perfect presenter for this documentary about the Queen’s long relationship with
horses.
Her Majesty was given a pony for her fourth birthday and
today, aged 87, still rides; and she’s also one of the country’s leading
breeders. With her team, who speak here about their work, she’s bred winners of
more than 1,600 races.
This film follows a spring season, from the birth of foals (which she names herself) at
