CLARE BALDING    RACING QUEEN
Clare Balding presenter of The Queen:  a passion for horses  (9.00pm BBC1) has racing in the blood.

Champion Lady Rider, this prize in 1990 was the culmination of her success as an amateur flat jockey before she turned her hand to racing journalism.

Royal favourite Her grandad, l father and brother all trained horses for Queen Elizabeth, the Queen used to breakfast with the Baldings when visiting their stables.

Or not? In a race in 1989 Clare cut across Princess Anne, almost knocking her out of the race.

The Queen:
A Passion for Horses
9.00pm BBC1
DOCUMENTARY Even without the fact that the Balding family has long trained the royal steeds, Channel 4Racing’s Clare would still be the perfect presenter for this documentary about the Queen’s long relationship with horses.

Her Majesty was given a pony for her fourth birthday and today, aged 87, still rides; and she’s also one of the country’s leading breeders. With her team, who speak here about their work, she’s bred winners of more than 1,600 races.

This film follows a spring season, from the birth of foals (which she names herself) at Sandringham to raceday at Newbury.
