TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT
Tom Kerr on a day of Classic clues and a fiendish puzzle at Ascot
“LINGFIELD PARK
a low- key racecourse nestled in the green pleasant countryside of southern Surrey , does not readily bring to mind the cacophonous
crowds and groaning grandstands of Epsom on Derby Day. Nor for that matter, do
its Classic trials.
“In times gone by both were of more importance, the peculiarities of the Lingfield turf track being regarded as a prime preparatory surface for the more pronounced idiosyncrasies of Epsom, home of the worlds most famous camber since the Romans packed in road- building. In more recent times other races have prospered at little Lingfields expense and both the Classic trials, once proud Group 3s have suffered the ignominy of relegation to Listed status.
“Yet if their prestige
has withered on the vine they still have the glory of a roll call of winners
peppered with Epsom champions. Since 1980 Teenoso, Slip Anchor, Kahyasi, and
most recently, the 1998 winner High-Rise have gone on to win the Derby having first proved their credentials in the
bucolic surroundings of Lingfield.
High Rise, and Kahyasi, both trained by Luca
Cumani. Luca attempting today to win with Greatwood, he must look kindly upon
this path to Epsom, for it has yielded both his winners of the Derby and none for anyone else for nigh on
three decades now. So how good is Greatwood? We don’t have long, to wait to find out, just
till 3pm this afternoon, when in the late spring magic of Lingfield, Greatwood has his chance to shine, for the
finely tuned Italian Horseman who knows what it takes to score.

Cumani sets Greatwood on tried-and-trusted path
By James Burn
LUCA CUMANI will be hoping the promising Greatwood can follow the path of the trainer's two Derby winners Kahyasi and High-Rise, who used the Lingfield Derby Trial as a stepping stone to Epsom glory. (10 hours ago)More
