OPENING

Richard Birch on a fascinating renewal of a chase
steeped in history.
“We’re all charged up for electric Power”
“IF IT’S intrigue you’re after the Paddy Power Cup rarely disappoints,
and the race that signals perhaps more than any the full embrace of the jumps
season has it in bucketloads this afternoon
“Course specialists are
everywhere at the top of the weights, but do they have too much weight? Going given yesterday was stated to be good to soft, but was
riding heavy, tiring the horses out. Big-
name trainers have hogged the roll of honour, but can two trainers from less
high-profile yards make their mark? Can JP McManus finally win it for the first time?

"When
it all got lost in translation. "
SAM’S
SNAPS
“Some
things I’m good at and some things I’m not so good at, such as speaking French.
“I
was in France last weekend to ride at Auteuil and there was a bit of a language
barrier. I have an app on my phone where you type the English in and it gives
you the French and then you say it. The problem is I didn’t know what they were
saying back to me. So I ended up having to give them my phone to write in what
they wanted to say. At least I tried.
What a blessing the racehorses speak the same language all around the world.
“Tara
Point could be anything. I rode her at Exeter this week and she jumped the
final hurdle pulling the same amount as when she started, beating some decent
horses. She took my breath away and it was quite spectacular.
“Donning
my onesies when I get home after racing is one of the best feelings.
“It
is a great thing when you come back from racing and want to chill out. Willy
and I got one each for Christmas in Nige’s colours with the black body, white
sleeves and yellow hood , which is quite cool. I love it.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
Nick Luck asks CH4 guest Richie McLernon who partners John's Spirit for Jonjo O'Neil in the 2.30 Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase this afternoon at Cheltenham, what makes a
chaser coming in to jump one of those big chase fences in a race, veer of a
straight course? Riding a racehorse into a fence to take- off point is key, the
racehorse can veer either left or right coming into a fence due to the fact
that he knows himself he needs a little bit more room to take off safely, to clear that fence, and
that little bit more room to take off is only available for that horse if he finds
himself too close to take off accurately, can afford himself that little bit of extra room he will veer one way or the
other to afford himself that little extra space to take off safely. If that
horse has no space around him to do this due to the other runners, and gets his stride wrong on take off, he is most likely to hit the fence which may bring him down, could even kill the horse, and or the rider. The take- off point demands split second timing accuracy, concentration between horse and rider.

The going at Cheltenham today is riding heavy, tiring some of these runners badly. .. Pineau De Re the Grand National winner 2013 finished 11th of 12. Taken along very steadily in last pair left behind after 10th, not knocked about. 20-1. Along way back to Aintree Grand National 2014.

WEEKEND RIDES
Sam Twiston-Davis
“Classy Caid Du Berlais" .
“TODAY is Paddy Power Gold Cup Day at Cheltenham and I’m finding
it hard to keep a lid on my excitement as I think Caid Du Berlais is just the
right type of horse to run really well in the big race.
“It is easy to get too excited before a race like this, but at
the same time I have to be realistic about the fact it’s a really really competitive event and
there are a lot of good horses in there to beat.
“I’m hoping he can run a big one. He ran a solid sort of race in
the Gallway Plate and probably just didn’t see out the 2m6f trip as you want to
be getting three miles to stay that far at Galway.
“He travelled nicely and jumped really well for a novice and we
felt after that the Paddy Power was the right sort of race to aim at.
“I’ve won this race before and I like to think he has the right
profile for it. It’s a race that can suit a novice as the handicapper doesn’t
know so much about them.
“Oscar Whisky and Present View are very interesting from a
handicap point of view but I do like Caid Du Berlais and think he has got the
right sort of form coming into it.
FEATURE RACE CHELTENHAM
WIN: Caid Du Berlais and Sam Twiston-
Davies won this Feature Race at Cheltenham today at 10-1. For Team (Paul) Nicholls. An
exciting win well done, yes, yes, yes.
