NICK LUCK INTRODUCES US TO THE MORNING LINE EQUUS ZONE SUPERSTAR GUEST William Haggas is a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Somerville Lodge stables in Newmarket, Suffolk. He is the son-in-law of the multiple champion jockey Lester Piggott.
He was educated at Harrow and played cricket at Lord's for Harrow against Eton in 1977, 1978 and 1979, captaining the side in the 1979 match.[1][2] He started his working life in his father's textile factory, but quit after three months and headed to Newmarket.[1] Before taking out a licence in his own right, he learnt his trade with John Winter and Mark Prescott. He trained his first winner in 1987.[3] As of June 2013, he has trained two British Classic winners - Shaamit, winner of the 1996 Derby, and Dancing Rain, winner of the 2011 Oaks. The first of these came when he had just 40 horses in his stable.[1] The second gave him the distinction of having two wins from his first two runners in the Epsom Classics.[4] His third, Vow, came fourth in the 2012 Oaks. Due to the exploits of Dancing Rain, he finished joint 7th in the 2011 British Champions Series trainers' table.

Check out what runners William is competing with today. Team Haggas are in good form, and picking up some top prizes.

City Style holds in the Strensall Stakes

Filed on 23 Aug 2013 @ 15:09

York Group double for Godolphin

The Charlie Appleby-trained City Style (City Zip) won the Group ThreeSky Bet Strensall Stakes at York on Friday, powering clear two furlongs out before idling in front under Silvestre de Souza. Danadana came with a late flourish, but City Style had enough in hand to repel his challenge by a neck.

De Souza said: "He got a bit warm beforehand and is a bit tricky but he took off when I gave him a slap and did it nicely. As you can see, he's a bit hairy and carries a bit of condition but he's very nice on his day even though he races lazily.

"City Style has spent all of his life travelling. He started off in America and since he's been with us he's been in Europe, he's been in Dubai and he's been in Singapore.

"He spends his life on an plane and he's not sure if it's winter or summer, but it doesn't affect him, as you could see today.

"I thought Danadana would probably nail us, but this horse was courageous in the finish.

40-1 Jwala bolts up in Nunthorpe upset

Report: York, Friday
Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes
(Group 1) 5f, 2yo+
JWALA caused an almighty upset in the Nunthorpe Stakes when powering home to take the Group 1 at odds of 40-1, with the well-backed favourite Shea Shea finishing half a length back in second.

Jwala's victory came as a relief to jockey Steve Drowne who had his licence withdrawn last year due to illness.

"I had to start again but luckily this filly came along for me," said Drowne. "It was so frustrating because what I had should have only kept me out for a fortnight. Everyone knows the problems I had. I'm just glad I'm back."
